Design Panel Discussion

Join our special guests design experts Maureen Forys and Andrei Pasternak for a lively discussion of design topics. With a wealth of knowledge and stories galore about Bay Area publishing and design, they promise an entertaining and lively presentation and will answer questions such as

  • What motivates you as a book designer? What is the most interesting part of your job?
  • What are the challenges you’ve encountered and lessons you’ve learned that could help other designers?
  • How has book design changed during your career?
  • What most excites you about changes happening in publishing now?

About the Presenters

Maureen Forys is the principal agent of Happenstance Type-O-Rama, an Oakland book packaging and design firm that has designed and typeset thousands of books for publishers, including Pearson Education, North Atlantic Books, Maker Media, Berrett-Koehler, and Chronicle Books. If you have seen the New York Times-bestselling and James Beard Award-winning book The Art of Fermentation (and we know you have because it’s on every shelf of every restaurant in Oakland and San Francisco), then you have seen her work.

Andrei Pasternak is currently a Design Director for Cengage San Francisco and has been in the publishing industry for 17 years. Driven by curiosity, he leads a team of creatives, designing print and digital products for Higher Education. Outside of work, you might find him playing bass, photographing, or out adventuring with his family.
