This is a two-session online workshop: Saturday and Sunday, December 5 & 6, 2020.

Using a contemporary version of gilding, the process of applying paper-thin sheets of metal to a surface, workshop participants will learn how to add metal to paper, wood and stone in their own shapes and patterns. Over the course of two 2-hour sessions, Solange will walk participants through the nuances of this technique from how to effectively prepare a variety of material surfaces and apply metal leaf as a compositional element.

Registration will close on Saturday, November 21st to allow time for materials to be ordered/delivered.

Materials to Bring: 

The following four items are contained in a kit (link is external)available from our friends at Arch Supplies, or independently from most art supply stores. Please purchase ASAP to ensure materials will arrive before class.
-1 ounce bottle red oxide fluid acrylic paint(link is external)
-1 bottle of gilding size (link is external)
-1 bottle of gilding sealant(link is external)
-1 packet of copper(link is external) or composition gold leaf (link is external)

-a small hake(link is external) or other soft brush
-a pair of soft cotton gloves(link is external) or a piece of soft cotton fabric
-at least 3 different surfaces including a piece of Bristol paper (required). A rock and a piece of wood are recommended; fabric and other surfaces encouraged for experimentation
-3 8×10” sheets of wax paper
-several small calligraphy, acrylic or watercolor brushes of varying sizes
-a pencil
-a hair dryer
-a straight edge ruler
-2 cups, 1 for water and 1 for fluid acrylic
-a rag or paper towel

Solange Roberdeau is a teaching artist based in Northern California.
