This is a two-session online workshop: Thursdays, December 10 & 17, 2020.

Autumn is almost over, but you can save a little bit of it by grabbing some of your favorite fallen leaves to make some leaf prints! This is a process that uses non-toxic water-based ink to print the shape and vein structure of a leaf, group of leaves, or even stalks of grass or pine needles; in short, any type of plant matter you have at hand.

In the second session we’ll use this printed paper on the covers of a nice blank journal. Known as a secret Belgian or criss cross binding, it is a nonadhesive sewn structure with a distinctive pattern.

A kit is included in the class fee and will be shipped to students two weeks before class. The kit contains text paper, boards, and thread.

Materials to Bring: Please use this information to order/obtain your supplies ahead of class.

In addition to the included kit (paper, boards, and thread) students will need to supply:

• Fallen leaves and other plant matter. If you live someplace with winter weather you should be able to find pine needles and other hardy plants.

• Water-soluble block printing ink (buy a couple colors to mix together, or just choose black) is external)

• Paper for leaf printing: soft, text-weight paper. Heavy watercolor paper will be too thick. You’ll need 4 pieces that are about 16 cm x 20 cm, and an additional 2 pieces that are about 4 cm x 20 cm to use for your book, plus some additional paper to play with. For example: is external)

• A 1/2″ stencil brush (like this,(link is external) for example)

• Basic bookbinding tools: awl, dividers, bone folder, scissors, ruler, cutting knife, needle, glue brush

• Wheatpaste (prepared ahead for the second session), PVA, or mix (PVA plus methyl cellulose)

Workshop Fee (includes kit): $110
