SUMMARY:Six Month Screenwriting Intensive
DESCRIPTION:with James Napoli \nThe art and craft of writing for the screen is a skill that all authors would do well to have in their creative arsenals. On one level\, prose fiction\, memoir\, non-fiction\, all these forms have been\, and will continue to be\, sought out by the film industry as foundations for works in the visual storytelling realm. So\, writers who bring with them a full understanding of the techniques—and very specific considerations—that go into bringing screen stories to life are adding a valuable component to their career qualifications. \nPerhaps even more importantly\, being able to offer screenplays among one’s catalogue of written works could add a new and potentially profitable set of skills to an author’s toolkit. Getting a handle on how those in movies and TV tell their stories will enrich and inspire the creative process in unexpected and energizing ways. Putting that knowledge into practice lets a writer generate a tangible art form that augments and amplifies their body of work. \nThis course is designed to guide you through the foundational elements of screenwriting\, including structural\, stylistic\, and formatting archetypes that inform script creation\, as you proceed toward a rough first draft screenplay or television pilot as the culmination of our coursework. \nWe will delve into modern standards of story construction along with the ancient roots of the traditional three-act structure. These theory elements will always be combined with hands-on writing exercises (some assigned as homework\, others taking shape “improv” style within class time)\, reading and analyzing several produced scripts\, and peer critiquing of your fellow authors’ projects as they take shape during our journey. In addition to structure\, we will go deeply into character and dialogue\, the importance of research\, and the distinct demands of forging evocative\, economical descriptive passages in screenplays.

SUMMARY:Experiments in Creativity
DESCRIPTION:with Coleman Stevenson \nIf you allow them to\, ideas for art and writing can come from absolutely anywhere. This creative generation class will put that theory to the test\, through a series of experiments in creative problem-solving\, spontaneous and chance-based play\, and other exploratory prompts that challenge you to work outside your normal modes and investigate how the creative brain works. \nPrior to the start of this series of classes\, each participant will receive a unique packet of random materials in the mail. In-class exercises and weekly assignments will ask you to work with these materials in various ways\, including an opportunity to create collaboratively at a distance. You’ll also keep a weekly journal detailing your personal process and ideas about creativity. \nAs support for this process\, we will read and discuss essays by artists and writers about the creative process. Creators working in any medium are welcome\, though you will be asked at times to cross genres. Also welcome is anyone who feels that they are “not a creative person.” This class will help you find the creative spark within. Materials fee includes all materials for class projects. \nPlease Note: We encourage you to register by January 10\, so that materials can be sent to arrive before the class begins. \nAccess Program\nWe want our writing classes and Delves to be accessible to everyone\, regardless of income and background. We understand that our tuition structure can present obstacles for some people. Our Access Program offers writing class and Delve tuitions at a reduced rate. The access program for writing classes covers 60% of the class tuition. Most writing classes have at least one access spot available.

SUMMARY:Writing the Autofiction Novella: 12-week intensive
DESCRIPTION:with Frances Badalamenti \nAutofiction is a unique genre (or non-genre) that combines the autobiographical with the fictional. In this course\, we will take a close look at the craft of autofiction. We will read novel excerpts\, short stories and novellas. We will also look at craft essays on the form. The goal over the twelve weeks is to work on a draft of a novella (if not a full draft\, then you will get a solid head start)\, which can be anywhere from 20K-40K words. \nThis course will be generative. You will be expected to write and submit a substantial amount of prose per week (1500-2500 words). We will read about 25 pages  of excerpts and craft essays each week and discuss them as a group. And there will be an ongoing discussion around goal setting and accountability with your fellow writers. This class is geared towards all levels of writers. Students will be expected to keep up with the weekly assignments (both reading and writing) and have a solid commitment to the process. \nExamples of (autofiction) writers that we will look at: Edouard Louis\, Karl Ove Knausgaard\, Ayah Akhtar\, Ben Lerner\, Zinzi Clemmons\, Garth Greenwell\, Sheila Heti\, Tao Lin\, Ocean Vuong\, Brandon Taylor and others.\n\nAccess Program\nWe want our classes to be accessible to everyone\, regardless of income and background. We understand that our tuition structure can present obstacles for some people. Our Access Program offers class registrations at a reduced rate. The access program for writing classes covers 60% of the class tuition. Most writing classes have at least one access spot available.

SUMMARY:How to Sell More Books Using Metadata
DESCRIPTION:Amazon\, Barnes & Noble\, Apple\, Kobo\, and Google Play all run on algorithms\, but each of them is different. Each provides their own tools to authors to help them become more visible to the right readers. But how is an author or small press to know what works best where? And how do you even decide whether to publish on one platform\, or “go wide” by publishing on many? Whatever you decide\, your metadata—the little details you enter in your book’s upload form—feeds the algorithm. In turn\, this can make or break the success of your book. \nUSA Today bestselling author and instructor Shelley Adina will take you through each retailer\, pointing out which algorithms work where\, and which tools are aimed at visibility for your books versus visibility for you\, the author or publisher. She will also talk briefly about selling direct on your website\, a strategy more and more authors are using for greater control of their business.

SUMMARY:An American Genocide: The United States and the California Indian Catastrophe\, 1846-1873
DESCRIPTION:An American Genocide: The United States and the California Indian Catastrophe\, 1846-1873\, by Benjamin Madley\, is the first full account of the government sanctioned genocide of California Indians under United States rule. It has been widely praised as groundbreaking\, raising fundamental questions about how Californians and Americans think of themselves and their history. \nBetween 1846 and 1873\, California’s Indian population plunged from perhaps 150\,000 to 30\,000. Madley is the first to uncover the full extent of the slaughter\, the involvement of state and federal officials\, indigenous resistance\, who did the killing\, the taxpayer dollars that supported it\, and why the killings ended. This deeply researched book is a comprehensive history of an American genocide.

SUMMARY:Once Upon a Tome: The Misadventures of a Rare Bookseller
DESCRIPTION:with author Oliver Darkshire in conversation with Mechanics’ Institute Events Assistant Pam Troy\nThe histories and mysteries of one of the worlds oldest bookstores\, in London\, are revealed by author\, bibliophile and rare bookseller Oliver Darkshire \n\n \nWelcome to Sotheran’s\, one of the oldest bookshops in the world\, with its weird and wonderful clientele\, suspicious cupboards\, unlabeled keys\, poisoned books\, and some things that aren’t even books\, presided over by one deeply eccentric apprentice. \nSome years ago\, Oliver Darkshire stepped into the hushed interior of Henry Sotheran Ltd (est. 1761) to apply for a job. Allured by the smell of old books and the temptation of a management-approved afternoon nap\, Darkshire was soon unteetering stacks of first editions and placating the store’s resident ghost (the late Mr. Sotheran\, hit by a tram). \nA novice in this ancient\, potentially haunted establishment\, Darkshire describes Sotheran’s brushes with history (Dickens\, the Titanic)\, its joyous disorganization\, and the unspoken rules of its gleefully old-fashioned staff\, whose mere glance may cause the computer to burst into flames. As Darkshire gains confidence and experience\, he shares trivia about ancient editions and explores the strange space that books occupy in our lives—where old books often have strong sentimental value\, but rarely a commercial one.

SUMMARY:The U.S. Constitution and the Mystery Novel\, by Micheal O’Connor
DESCRIPTION:Though not everyone realizes it\, the U.S. Constitution can have serious repercussions on a mystery novel. Search warrant requirements\, Miranda warnings\, and prohibitions against rubber hoses are just a few of the many constraints placed on police detectives. While private detectives are not directly affected by the Constitution\, disregarding the rules can have negative consequences for them as well. We’ll explore the highlights of these restrictions\, and the different impacts they have on police and private detectives. Keep those pesky legal fact-checkers at bay!

SUMMARY:The Epicenter: Taleen Voskuni with Jen Siraganian
DESCRIPTION:Litquake’s Epicenter is excited to launch our Spring 2023 season\, with Sorry\, Bro\, the debut novel by Bay Area author Taleen Voskuni. This vibrant and heartfelt queer rom-com\, set amidst the current San Francisco tech community\, follows a young Armenian-American woman as she rediscovers her roots and embraces who she really is. \nWhen Nareh Bedrossian’s non-Armenian boyfriend gets down on one knee and proposes to her in front of a room full of drunken tech boys\, she realizes it’s time to find someone who shares her idea of romance. Her mother\, armed with plenty of mom-guilt and a spreadsheet of Facebook-stalked Armenian men\, convinces Nar to attend “Explore Armenia\,” a month-long series of events in the city. But it’s not the mom-approved playboy doctor or the wealthy engineer who catch Nar’s eye—it’s Erebuni\, a woman as immersed in the witchy arts as she is in preserving Armenian identity. Suddenly\, with Erebuni as her wingwoman\, the events feel like far less of a chore\, and much more of an adventure. Who knew cooking up kuftes together could be so…sexy? Taleen Voskuni appears in conversation with Los Gatos Poet Laureate Jen Siraganian.
