SUMMARY:Tips & Tricks for Developing Design Ideas
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, October 7\, for the first of two virtual lectures with designer and book artist Brenda Gallagher. This first will cover generating design ideas for bookbinding. \nA basic how-to for bookbinders looking for ways to create design ideas for bookbinding\, the talk will begin with the content and mood of the book. Brenda will discuss how to respond artistically to the content of the book with your own visual statement. We will explore ways to work around the negative inner voice\, beginning with word play and exploring ideas with thumbnail sketching through to designing final compositions. Other topics covered will be what to do when you get stuck and the value and vulnerability of receiving feedback from others. \n  \nBrenda Gallagher is a graphic designer\, book artist and fine bookbinder living in Niwot\, Colorado. She has worked designing commercial books and magazines for over 25 years in the Boulder area and serves on the board of the Boulder Book Arts League. Her work has been included in several juried shows for the Guild of Bookworkers and Open/Set bookbinding shows\, many of which have traveled nationally. \nBrenda is an enthusiastic teacher of letterpress printing and bookbinding for students of all ages. She is also a graduate of the American Academy of Bookbinding in Telluride where she earned a diploma in Design Fine Bookbinding.

SUMMARY:A Beginner’s Bindery in a Hide-Away Box
DESCRIPTION:“When I started bookbinding\, I always felt limited by the tools I had. 30 years later I have all the best tools imaginable. Yet the bench where I make DAS Bookbinding videos is tiny and 90% of what I do is done with the tools hanging on a small wall area. I could easily have bought these tools 30 years ago. I just didn’t know what to buy and how to use them.” \nTo a hobbyist or beginner\, starting out in bookbinding may seem intimidating–so much to learn\, and so many tools. But Darryn Schneider of DAS Bookbinding wants to reassure the beginner that creating a bookbinding practice needn’t be scary. “I want new bookbinders focused on learning new skills\, making books they are proud of\, and having fun. I don’t want people feeling frustrated because they couldn’t make something for lack of a tool or material\, or even a well-organized workspace.” In this lecture Darryn–whose popular tutorials on YouTube include how-tos on bindings\, tools\, and materials–will share a set of tools and basic materials for the beginning bookbinder\, as well as some tricks and tips for workspace optimization. You can fit everything you need into a box–Darryn will show you how. \nFor 30 years Darryn Schneider has been a hobbyist bookbinder. His YouTube channel\, Adventures in Bookbinding\, has over 57\,000 subscribers.

SUMMARY:Monthly Bookbinding Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Japanese Stab Binding: \nThis beginner-friendly stab binding technique is a perfect project to start your bookbinding journey. It is generally called a Japanese stab binding but was used throughout Asia. It’s a great option for binding pre-cut sheets of paper\, no folding or gluing required. The simplicity of preparation and materials makes it the perfect “starter” project but is practiced by bookbinders of all levels. \nStab bindings are very popular in Japan dating back to the Edo period. Characteristics of this binding are an exposed spine with single sheets of paper sewn through the cover using several recognized sewing patterns; the patterns are the focal point of the binding. Since the spine is sewn through the cover the resulting book does not lay flat. \n  \nNo experience necessary\, but class-size is limited to 12 people per workshop. Reserve your spot today!

SUMMARY:Binding Community: Bringing Together Diverse Peoples with the Art of Bookbinding
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to create a community book-binding experience? Want to bring attention to local events through bookbinding? Don’t know where to start? \nPlease join community organizer and artist\, Cynthia Marsh\, in a virtual webinar with the American Bookbinders Museum on how to do just that. From exploring preliminary ideas through execution\, Marsh will guide you through the process of using printing and bookbinding to build community. \nCynthia Marsh is a record keeper who begins conversations by juxtaposing collected remnants of the visual noise that crosses her path. Marsh was a founding member of the Women’s Graphic Center at the (historic) Woman’s Building in Los Angeles. From 1978-1990 she operated a freelance print and illustration studio in Los Angeles that produced Grammy-nominated album covers. She taught courses in printmaking and design at a multitude of universities and founded the Goldsmith Press and Rare Type Collection–a living museum of 19th-century wood type that encourages community members to print and post their stories.
