SUMMARY:Book Cover Confidential (Noon Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:What do professional book designers really think of modern cover design? When they look at current cover design trends\, is their first thought Great! or Hate!\n\n\n\nWatch seasoned cover designers give their rapid-fire hot takes on recent covers from a variety of genres. And beyond initial reactions\, they’ll discuss what principles of design they’re seeing upheld or ignored. Whether you create cover designs\, promote books\, or just like to judge a book’s cover\, you’ll get a good review of the fundamentals and see plenty of examples of design that hits its mark or misses. \nVeteran book designer Victor Mingovits will lead the discussion with Bay Area designers Nita Ybarra and Mike Nicholls\, with time for audience questions. \n\n\nMike Nicholls is an Oakland-based creative director and visual artist with over 20 years of experience in design\, media\, and storytelling. He founded Umber\, a cultural media platform centering art\, design\, and music. His work has been featured by AfroTech\, PRINT Magazine\, CreativeMornings\, SF Design Week\, and more. His life’s purpose is to use design\, storytelling\, and visual art to connect people with the culture that inspires them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNita Ybarra\, a graphic designer\, has been in the publishing industry for 30+ years\, specializing in book covers and book interior designs. Her goal is always to provide her clients with meaningful\, creative design solutions. From small and large trade publishers to university presses of multiple genres: spirituality/religion\, body/mind/spirit\, lifestyle/food\, history\, memoirs\, and academia. Beyond her love for books\, she also enjoys designing logos\, branding\, and packaging. She taught typography as an adjunct instructor at the School of Graphic Design/Academy of Art University for 18+ years\, sharing her knowledge and passion for Typography with undergraduate and graduate students

SUMMARY:Copyediting Today: The Niceties and Not-So-Niceties
DESCRIPTION:An Open and Fun Forum on Pronouns\, Short Attention Spans\, and Whatever Else Makes You Crazed and Confused.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAre the rules of copyediting and language usage changing as our culture changes? Of course they are! But how fast\, and in a good direction? \nThis PPN Professional Development session aims to provide everyone a chance to rant\, bemoan\, prescribe\, and plead about whatever sets them off. Think about arguments you’ve had with authors and marketers and offer up your experience to the group for comment. If we don’t change minds and hearts\, we’ll at least let you vent your frustrations before a very sympathetic audience! \nThis session will encourage audience participation\, and to get things started we’ll have some very brief comments by two top-notch—and very opinionated—copyeditors. \n\n\n\n\nGigi Mark started her career as an editorial assistant at Benjamin-Cummings/Addison-Wesley\, working on chemistry textbooks\, and eventually moved into the developmental editing department there as an associate editor. After a few detours into writing—public relations and marketing—she returned to book publishing\, gratefully. She spent fifteen years as a production editor at Jossey-Bass Publishers\, moonlighting as a copyeditor and proofreader\, before landing in scholarly publishing at Stanford University Press\, which was her objective all along. She has been with SUP since 2013. \nChansonette Buck is the owner and executive editor of Appaloosa WordCraft\, which provides research\, writing\, and editing for a wide range of organizational clients—mostly public policy think tanks and nonprofits. She is also a published\, award-winning poet. She holds a PhD in English from the University of California\, Berkeley.

SUMMARY:Persuasive Data Graphics
DESCRIPTION:Data graphics are magical. Come learn how to make pictures that can help us discover and discuss otherwise invisible phenomena. \nWe will dissect the elements that make data graphics spectacular\, ranging from choosing effective visual metaphors to picturing uncertainty and the subtle art of color-encoding. We will critique and we will make. Our emphasis will be on the hard human decisions necessary to create effective data graphics. (This class’s perspective is technology-agnostic.) \nThe workshop will be taught over four three-hour sessions (5:30-8:30 on Wednesdays\, September 25\, October 2\, October 9\, and October 16). Each session will focus on a specific aspect of information design: \n\nVisual metaphors\nComparisons\nProcess\nValue creation\n\nBy the end of the class we will have studied bar charts\, line graphs\, thematic maps\, color engineering\, table design\, and lots more. \nYou should arrive able to: \n\nSketch simple geometries with paper and pencil\nMake a bar chart and line graph in a web tool like Google Sheets or Datawrapper\nComposite graphics and text in a design tool like Illustrator or Figma\nSpend a couple extra hours each week developing your own charts\n\nEach session will be anchored by a masterpiece of information design. We will discuss not just the aspects that make each piece effective\, but also the craft and context of its creation\, gaining insights into how great information design actually happens. \nAdditionally\, sessions will include data-sketching warm-ups\, presentation of information-design theory\, and review of take-home exercises. We will learn through mutual reflection and constructive critique of one another’s work. The engaged student will emerge from the class with more capabilities and enthusiasm for data graphics.

SUMMARY:Women’s Book History and the Knowledge Revolution
DESCRIPTION:The fields of book history and bibliography are having a cultural reckoning. The Women in Book History Bibliography (womensbookhistory.org) has acted as an impetus for championing the “lost” histories of women in the book trades and as a tool for arguing for further recovery work. Still in progress\, the bibliography currently consists of over 2000 citations of scholarly work that has otherwise been made inaccessible due to problematic indexing practices. This lecture will combine an overview of historical figures and a discussion of the ways that bibliographical practices can make – or erase – history. \nAn in-person presentation by Cait Coker\, associate professor and curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts\, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. \n** Co-presented and co-hosted by the Northern California Chapter of the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America **

SUMMARY:Python for Visual Designers
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of Python in the free MacOS application DrawBot. Create and animate vector art\, set type with code\, and save your sketches as vector and raster images\, videos\, and .pdfs. \nAs designers\, we use tools to help complete our work but often don’t consider how these tools can box us into certain processes and solutions. Creating our own tools can lead us down new and unexpected avenues in our designs. Some of the best visual ideas come about by setting up some boundaries — a color palette\, a typeface or two — and then running wild within the system. Working out a system in code is a great way to explore these ideas: computers love repetition and can quickly make hundreds of variations on a theme\, and mistakes in the code can result in something that often looks better than what was originally intended. \nNo programming experience is necessary for this course (held over two weekends: Saturday to Sunday\, September 21–22 and September 28–29\, from 10am–1pm)\, but students should be comfortable doing some arithmetic and basic geometry. Workshop participants will learn the basics of the Python programming language while working in the free DrawBot application for MacOS. A quick sketch made with code in DrawBot can be saved as a .pdf to be finished later in Illustrator. Or\, with a little bit more work in the code editor\, an entire book\, magazine\, or animation can be built without even launching Illustrator or InDesign. \nUsing the fundamentals of the Python programming language\, students will sketch to create vector art with code and use the basic principles of design to turn their sketches into PDF documents\, animated .gifs\, and videos.

SUMMARY:Richard Danne goes airborne with “Stars” launch!
DESCRIPTION:This event\, produced by AIGA/SF\, features an expansive visual presentation by Richard Danne with projects from his stellar new book: “Shooting for the Stars\,” a six-decade celebration of timeless design. The book’s 248 colorful pages include successful programs / projects which have stood the test of time – for diverse clients like NASA to FIT; Paramount to AT&T; large budgets to small; all with strong concepts and enduring design solutions. \nEach project is captioned with a date to appreciate the longevity of the design. Plus\, many stories of how the projects evolved\, some in surprising ways. ie: The author being stranded after a presentation in Saudi Arabia\, with a total lock-down of airspace. \nThere is also much about Danne’s history of design leadership / service: U.S. president of AGI; national president of AIGA; and founding president of AIGA / NY; commitments which went well beyond his own practice and for the good of all. He’s been honored with: the AIGA Medal; the AIGA / SF Fellow Award\, three U.S. Presidential Awards for Design Excellence; NASA’s Exceptional Public Achievement Medal. \n“He’s a leader\, gentleman\, and one-of-a-kind shining star in our vast design galaxy.” Dana Arnett\, former AIGA president\, founder & chairman\, VSA Partners\, Chicago\, IL \nSimply put\, Richard’s presentation and book offer an animated long view of our profession and its evolution.

SUMMARY:Working with First-time Authors
DESCRIPTION:Publishing is complicated\, and explaining it to authors—especially first-time and self-publishing authors—can take up hours of your valuable time. Some editors have said that the problem can be intense enough that they actually avoid working with inexperienced author clients\, because the sheer amount of time required is too hard on their profit margins. \nIn this presentation\, editor MC Calvi talks about a powerful solution to this problem\, showing how preexisting resources can be leveraged to support authors\, save time\, and enhance a freelance editor’s chances of scoring future clients. MC will also be introducing their new pay-what-you-want resource\, The Big Little Booklet of Publishing Resource Links\, so editors and authors can immediately begin implementing these strategies themselves. \nSave hours of your valuable time by using these vetted resources to help explain: \n\nHow to get a book published\nHow to self-publish\nWhat type of editing a book needs\nWhat different types of editing entail\nHow to submit a proposal\nHow to write with sensitivity\nHow to navigate rights and permissions issues\nand more!\n\nMC Calvi (they/them) is a freelance editor with eight years’ and hundreds of books’ worth of publishing experience. They have worked for publishers including New Harbinger\, North Atlantic Books\, Counterpoint Press\, Insight Editions\, and Weldon Owen International\, and specialize in self-help\, psychology\, spirituality\, New Age\, and LGBTQ books. When they’re not editing\, they enjoy reading\, writing\, tea\, flannel\, road tripping\, interior decorating\, and hanging out with animals of all kinds. They live in Los Angeles\, California. \n\nREGISTER (required)

SUMMARY:A ‘Deep City’ Approach to Climate Change: The Case of Deep Oakland
DESCRIPTION:Deep Oakland: How Geology Shaped a City\, presents a seldom-attempted blend of human and geologic history\, explaining the stories told by the physical landscape and detailing how the city has interacted with it. Wealth generated in the region from its geological resources―water\, stone\, soil and minerals―has influenced societies from the pre-contact Ohlones to the Americans of yesterday and today. So have the hazards of earthquake\, fire\, drought and changing sea level. Today\, climate change has shown us that nature and civilization are not separate realms; the idea they are is an illusion that grows ever more costly. \nThe topic of a city’s rocks and landmarks is a natural entree to a more global\, “deep time” centered standpoint that can enrich readers in new ways as they guide their communities toward more sustainable policies. The pleasures of learning to see one’s familiar surroundings in new depth\, as geoheritage\, translate to deeper engagement in determining a city’s collective future. Recent advances in geology\, from plate tectonics to digital visualizations\, have given geologists unprecedented ways to tell the histories of the cities they live in; Deep Oakland proves the power of a geologist’s approach to equip the public for policy engagement based on nature’s long-term trends and demands. \nAn in-person and virtual presentation by Andrew Alden\, geologist and geoscience writer

SUMMARY:Genre Bending: Writing Outside the Lines” with Carole Stivers
DESCRIPTION:When scientist Carole Stivers began writing science fiction\, she dreamed of readers she’d never met\, enjoying and discussing her work. But she also dreamed of acceptance in “literary circles.” She secured an agent unfamiliar with sci-fi who saw cross-over potential for her debut novel\, The Mother Code. What happened next was a crash course in the impact of genre classification on book marketing. Carole will tell you what she wished she had known before embarking on the ever-shifting seas of literary genre\, and offer tips on how you might keep your own head above water when “writing outside the lines.”

SUMMARY:The Nuts & Bolts of Text Typography
DESCRIPTION:The text block is fundamental to creating any typographic system\, whether on the page or on screen. But what typeface to use and at what size? How do we determine line length and leading? And what about readability and hierarchy? \nOver the course of two days (Saturday to Sunday\, September 14–15 from 9am–5pm)\, we will examine typographic details as well as overarching principles from the letter to the page. We will begin by considering the interdependence between type size\, leading\, line length\, ragging\, and justification. And after an introduction to traditional methods of shaping the page\, we will set continuous text within the grids of a single-column and multicolumn page. \nWe will be drawing from the extraordinary resources available to us at the Letterform Archive\, in particular their library of historic type specimen books. \nThis two-day workshop is for anyone in need of a refresher on setting a well-behaved text block. Basic knowledge of InDesign is required.

SUMMARY:Redemptive Dreams: Engaging Kevin Starr’s California
DESCRIPTION:An essential piece in California Studies\, Redemptive Dreams: Engaging Kevin Starr’s California offers the first critical engagement with the vision of California’s most ambitious interpreter. While Starr’s multifaceted and polymathic vision of California offered a unique gaze—synthesizing central features\, big themes\, and incredible problems with the propitious golden dream—his eight-volume California Dream series\, along with several other books and thousands of published articles and essays\, often puzzled historians and other scholars. Historians in the contemporary school of critical historiography often found Starr’s narrative approach—seeking to tell the internal drama of the California story—to be less attuned to the most important work happening in the field. Such a perspective fails to acknowledge key developments in historical subfields like Black and African American Studies\, Chicana/o/x Studies\, Asian Studies\, Native Studies\, and others that draw from the narrative in their critical work and how this relates to Starr’s contribution. Along with being a major figure in California institutional life\, with literary output spanning genres\, it is through the lens of his lived experience as a devout Catholic that this critical sociological perspective sheds new light on his project. With contributions from sociology\, history\, and theology\, akin to investigations appearing in Theology and California: Theological Refractions on California’s Culture (Routledge)\, Redemptive Dreams offers interdisciplinary perspectives that highlight key features inherent in interdisciplinary theological reflection on place and illuminates these diverse disciplinary discourses as they appear in Starr’s articulation of the California Dream. \nAn in-person and virtual presentation by Jason S. Sexton\, author and professor of sociology at University of California\, Los Angeles \n
