DESCRIPTION:This Letterform Lecture will take you on a whirlwind tour of bitmaps\, cathode rays\, and how type and computer technology have evolved together. This talk is part how-it-works and where-it-came-from\, and part love letter to what is inevitably lost to obsolescence. \nWhile print has often been the ultimate goal of “digital” typography\, there is a parallel story of type shown on screens – letters conjured up and discarded in real time. This talk will touch on the different ways letterforms have been produced on displays\, and how technology for print and technology for the screen eventually became the same thing. Fun topics include: the unique cathode ray aesthetic; the design of bitmap fonts; arcade and other games; how Bézier curves work; and tricks used to make small text legible. \nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library\, where events are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Historical Black Publications Inspire Contemporary InDesign Projects
DESCRIPTION:Silas Munro and his company\, Polymode\, use InDesign and other modern tools of graphic design to create award-winning projects from book design to museum displays. But what animates him? What are his light bulb moments? How does he do it? \nNo easy answer\, of course. But among his influences are the rich lineages of publications representing many facets of Black life\, from the 1900–1919 Colored American Magazine to the iconic oeuvre of the Johnson Publishing Company’s Ebony and Jet. In this presentation\, Munro will explore a selection of significant Black publications from the 20th century through the design of their layouts into their cultural relevance. He will talk about how these histories inspire Polymode’s poetic research process when applied to book design and his work as a design historian.

They are the author of Four Lost Cities: A Secret History of the Urban Age and Scatter\, Adapt and Remember: How Humans Will Survive a Mass Extinction\, which was a finalist for the LA Times Book Prize in science. They’re also the author of the novels The Terraformers\, The Future of Another Timeline\, and Autonomous\, which won the Lambda Literary Award. As a journalist\, they are a writer for the New York Times and elsewhere\, and have a monthly column in New Scientist. They have published in The Washington Post\, Slate\, Popular Science\, Ars Technica\, The New Yorker\, and The Atlantic\, among others. They are the co-host of the Hugo Award-winning podcast Our Opinions Are Correct. Previously\, they were the founder of io9\, and served as the editor-in-chief of Gizmodo. \nNASEEM JAMNIA was born to Iranian immigrants and raised in the North Side of Chicago\, which they still call home even though they no longer live there. Their writing has appeared in The Washington Post\, Cosmopolitan\, The Rumpus\, The Writer’s Chronicle\, and other venues. They were the 2018 Bitch Media Fellow in Technology\, a 2019 Lambda Literary Fellow in Young Adult Fiction\, and a 2022 Otherwise Fellow\, and was named the inaugural Samuel R. Delany Fellow. DESCRIPTION:Lowell Thing\, author of “Cover Treasure – The Life and Art of Margaret Armstrong\,” describes how\, beginning on the lawn of a library book sale\, he began to discover and collect books from the “Golden Age” of American trade publishers’ decorated cloth bindings (1890-1915)\, especially those of one of its best-known artists. Over the next forty years\, he was able to assemble almost all of Margaret Armstrong’s known designs and some that were unknown by the artist’s first discoverers\, Charles Gullans and John Espey. In this talk\, Lowell Thing shows highlights of his collection as well as previously unpublished photos of the artist and her family. \nAn illustrated talk by Lowell Thing\, author and collector.

SUMMARY:New Leaves: The Cherokee Syllabary in the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:The year 2021 marked the bicentennial of the Cherokee syllabary\, the writing system for the Cherokee language invented by Sequoyah. Today\, it remains integral to the culture and identity of the Cherokee people and is\, like the language itself\, in the midst of concentrated revitalization efforts. Join type designer and Cherokee Nation citizen Chris Skillern on a walk through the history of the syllabary and its adaptation to new technologies. Then get a glimpse at what the future may hold for the syllabary. \nChris will share some personal work and talk about the difficulties of designing modern type families for a script with few models. See the exciting work that’s being done today to appeal to a new generation of language learners and to carry this remarkable invention into the future\, and hear Chris’s personal story of an ongoing journey toward fluency\, in both language and design. \nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library\, where events are free and open to all.

DESCRIPTION:WhyTalks welcomes Mark Andrews\, as he speaks with us about his distinguished and brilliant career as an animator and filmmaker. \nMark is currently at ReelFX\, where he’s recently released a Netflix original series in the summer of 2022 called Super Giant Robot Brothers\, the first CG animated series final pixel render in Unreal Engine. His talk will cover the virtual production work done for this series\, among others\, and innovation in animation. \nMark Andrews is also the director of Disney Pixar’s Golden Globe and Academy Award-winning feature “Brave.” Andrews joined Pixar Animation Studios in December 2000 and was a member of Pixar’s senior creative team. Prior to that\, he served as Head of Story on the Academy Award-winning feature films “The Incredibles” and “Ratatouille”. Andrews also provided his talents to Walt Disney Pictures’ “John Carter” as second-unit director and co-writer. In addition to his work on Pixar’s feature films\, Andrews co-wrote and co-directed the Academy Award-nominated short film\, “One Man Band.” \nHe’s received an Emmy for his writing and storyboard work on “Star Wars Clone Wars the Animated series”\, as well as an Annie Award for storyboarding on “Iron Giant”. He is a versatile filmmaker\, writer\, director and visionary\, lending his talents and skills on several other animated feature films and TV series such as “Marvel’s What If?”\, “Primal”\, “Samurai Jack”\, and the “New Adventures of Johnny Quest”. \nA CalArts alum\, Mark’s been described as “a force of nature” by his fellow filmmakers.

DESCRIPTION:The late 19th century has been labelled the “Baedeker Era” after the famous series of compact\, bright-red travel guides published simultaneously in German\, English\, and French. The Baedeker guides’ trademark characteristics – systematic\, impersonal\, regularly updated\, in a portable format packed with practical information and complementary maps – have served as a template for all subsequent guidebooks up to the present day. \nBut how did this specialty format develop? In a talk based on original research drawn from his personal collection spanning 1600 to 1840\, Bill Newlin will trace the evolution of early travel guides\, beginning with itineraries of Italy and France written by and for tutors escorting young noblemen on the Grand Tour.

DESCRIPTION:In this Letterform Lecture\, we will taste the visual power of a lost calligraphic tradition through one artist’s immersion in the early Arabic scripts broadly labelled as “Kufic.” Joumana Medlej uses examples from her work to illustrate the respective qualities of the two great strands of this family\, and how she harnesses its visual language to create compositions made of pure meaning. She will share how her journey towards an authentic understanding of the script revealed that it is defined not by an outside set of formal rules\, but by more elusive principles that can only be learned through embodied practice\, and in return allow greater creative expression. \nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. DESCRIPTION:The creative career of Joseph Jacinto “Jo” Mora (1876-1947) was both compelling and diverse. A painter\, muralist\, sculptor\, building designer\, cartographer\, actor\, set designer\, cowboy\, and husband and father\, Mora’s art work sprang from his interests in numerous subjects including Native Americans and cowboys\, the American landscape\, California history and its missions\, the classics of Chaucer\, and Mora’s love of animals. \nThe artistic legacy of Jo Mora continues to evolve. Upon Mora’s passing in 1947\, his son Jo Jr. lovingly worked to spread the word about his father’s creative accomplishments. That endeavor has been passed along to Peter Hiller\, the Jo Mora Collection Curator. \nJoin Peter as he shares how Jo Mora’s art has\, and continues to\, find its way into popular culture and the wider world in both traditional and surprising ways. \nIn in-person and virtual presentation by Peter Hiller\, author\, historian\, and Jo Mora Collection Curator for the Monterey History and Art Association
