SUMMARY:Before Baedeker: Travel Guidebooks to 1840
DESCRIPTION:The late 19th century has been labelled the “Baedeker Era” after the famous series of compact\, bright-red travel guides published simultaneously in German\, English\, and French. The Baedeker guides’ trademark characteristics – systematic\, impersonal\, regularly updated\, in a portable format packed with practical information and complementary maps – have served as a template for all subsequent guidebooks up to the present day. \nBut how did this specialty format develop? In a talk based on original research drawn from his personal collection spanning 1600 to 1840\, Bill Newlin will trace the evolution of early travel guides\, beginning with itineraries of Italy and France written by and for tutors escorting young noblemen on the Grand Tour.

SUMMARY:Freedom in Restriction: My Journey with Kufi with Joumana Medlej
DESCRIPTION:In this Letterform Lecture\, we will taste the visual power of a lost calligraphic tradition through one artist’s immersion in the early Arabic scripts broadly labelled as “Kufic.” Joumana Medlej uses examples from her work to illustrate the respective qualities of the two great strands of this family\, and how she harnesses its visual language to create compositions made of pure meaning. She will share how her journey towards an authentic understanding of the script revealed that it is defined not by an outside set of formal rules\, but by more elusive principles that can only be learned through embodied practice\, and in return allow greater creative expression. \nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library\, where events are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:A Fresh Take on Interactivity in InDesign
DESCRIPTION:InDesign has a rich toolset for adding a wide variety of interactivity to your documents. But to use these interactive features well\, sometimes you need to think a little differently. In this session\, we will dig into the “how-to” to produce a series of interactive effects; hyperlinks\, pop-ups\, rollovers\, multi-state objects\, slideshows\, buttons and more. We’ll also explore the different formats available to export your document out of InDesign\, and the pros and cons of each. If you’ve tried InDesign’s interactive features and found them frustrating\, or have heard clients ask\, “can we make that interactive” but don’t know where to start\, join Laurie in this fast paced session and take a fresh look.

SUMMARY:Contempo Jo Mora
DESCRIPTION:The creative career of Joseph Jacinto “Jo” Mora (1876-1947) was both compelling and diverse. A painter\, muralist\, sculptor\, building designer\, cartographer\, actor\, set designer\, cowboy\, and husband and father\, Mora’s art work sprang from his interests in numerous subjects including Native Americans and cowboys\, the American landscape\, California history and its missions\, the classics of Chaucer\, and Mora’s love of animals. \nThe artistic legacy of Jo Mora continues to evolve. Upon Mora’s passing in 1947\, his son Jo Jr. lovingly worked to spread the word about his father’s creative accomplishments. That endeavor has been passed along to Peter Hiller\, the Jo Mora Collection Curator. \nJoin Peter as he shares how Jo Mora’s art has\, and continues to\, find its way into popular culture and the wider world in both traditional and surprising ways. \nIn in-person and virtual presentation by Peter Hiller\, author\, historian\, and Jo Mora Collection Curator for the Monterey History and Art Association

SUMMARY:Letters from Buenos Aires with Muk Monsalve
DESCRIPTION:Take a journey through the locations and architectural details in Buenos Aires that inspired a typographic textile.\nSince 2018\, Muk Monsalve has been hosting and curating type walks around Buenos Aires with her art and business partner\, Lucía Soto. This project\, called Letra Capital\, allows them to highlight and share the love they feel while walking their city. \nWhen their type walks halted during the pandemic\, they developed a souvenir for Letra Capital: a typographic scarf recreating the journey. They had so much fun developing it that the product ended up becoming a collection called Musa del Asfalto. The scarves and cover ups are not only beautiful\, they also tell stories through their design\, type\, and phrases. The typefaces they use in the collection\, Arrabal and Ciudadela\, were custom designed–not revivals–and take direct inspiration from landmarks and landscapes of Buenos Aires. \nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library\, where events are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Salon Series 37: Recovering the Forgotten Women of Metal Type Design with Bethany Qualls
DESCRIPTION:Dig into overlooked design history and get a sneak peek at Letterform Archive’s forthcoming research hub on women in metal type.\nEver wonder who originally designed your favorite typefaces? Many of the fonts we use today (such as Futura\, Helvetica\, Baskerville) originated in the metal type era (late 1800s to 1950s) when hot metal typesetting became the norm for printing\, revolutionizing what had been a mostly manual process for centuries. Much of today’s typographic design relies on norms from this period when Linotype and Monotype dominated. Yet\, with few exceptions\, women’s contributions in the metal type era have mostly been erased or ignored. \nFor this Salon\, Bethany Qualls takes us on a deep dive into these often-overlooked women and their contributions to type history. Even though others have researched early women type designers\, no single\, publicly accessible resource exists to synthesize all of what we do know. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at her role as a Mellon Public Scholar in creating Letterform’s forthcoming finding aid and research hub which aims to fill this gap. Highlights will include examples of type specimens from the LA collection\, what’s been left out of most English language resources thus far\, tips on how to research in languages you don’t speak written in alphabets you can’t read\, and the project’s future phases. \n  \nOn-site and online.

SUMMARY:Salon Series 39: Call and Response: Histories of Designing Protest
DESCRIPTION:Protesters through time have used typography to strike through myriad forms of oppression. Their urgent\, often handmade signs\, placards\, and banners put bigots on notice that their hate has been marked for correction. Charting the histories of this material is also an artform itself. The speakers in this panel will share their research and curatorial practices on the history of protest movements across North America and the Caribbean. \nLike all Archive Salon Series events\, a recording of this presentation and panel will be available to members.

SUMMARY:Continental Reckoning: The American West in the Age of Expansion
DESCRIPTION:In Continental Reckoning renowned historian Elliott West presents a sweeping narrative of the American West and its vital role in the transformation of the nation. In the 1840s\, by which time the United States had expanded to the Pacific\, what would become the West was home to numerous vibrant Native cultures and vague claims by other nations. Thirty years later it was organized into states and territories and bound into the nation and world by an infrastructure of rails\, telegraph wires\, and roads and by a racial and ethnic order\, with its Indigenous peoples largely dispossessed and confined to reservations. \nUnprecedented exploration uncovered the West’s extraordinary resources\, beginning with the discovery of gold in California within days of the United States acquiring the territory following the Mexican-American War. As those resources were developed\, often by the most modern methods and through modern corporate enterprise\, half of the contiguous United States was physically transformed. Continental Reckoning guides the reader through the rippling\, multiplying changes wrought in the western half of the country\, arguing that these changes should be given equal billing with the Civil War in this crucial transition of national life. \nAs the West was acquired\, integrated into the nation\, and made over physically and culturally\, the United States shifted onto a course of accelerated economic growth\, a racial reordering and redefinition of citizenship\, engagement with global revolutions of science and technology\, and invigorated involvement with the larger world. The creation of the West and the emergence of modern America were intimately related. Neither can be understood without the other. With masterful prose and a critical eye\, West presents a fresh approach to the dawn of the American West\, one of the most pivotal periods of American history. \nA virtual presentation by Elliot West\, historian and author.

SUMMARY:Libraries of the Barbary Coast\, 1848-1879
DESCRIPTION:an illustrated lecture with librarian Taryn Edwards\n\nSan Francisco since its birth has been a literary town. The thousands of people who came to California during the Gold Rush were voracious readers – eager to catch up on the news of the day and to while away the time between shifts in the gold fields with a good book. While many were as simple as a bookshelf of titles in a boarding house; there was a great need for true libraries to serve the needs of the city’s growing population.

SUMMARY:Inventing the Alphabet: Origin Stories to Forensic Evidence with Johanna Drucker
DESCRIPTION:Accounts of the origins of the alphabet contribute to the broad history of ideas. Many vivid intellectual traditions have flourished\, and some have been set aside\, discredited by “modern” scientific methods of archaeology and forensic science. Turning our attention to these varied lineages\, we see not only a history of the alphabet\, but also different modes of knowledge production and transmission. \nThe alphabet was invented by Semitic speakers in the ancient Near East around four thousand years ago\, and then spread worldwide. But the first text that says anything about its history comes from the Greek historian Herodotus\, and his description of the letters—a gift from the Phoenician Cadmus—contains no images. How can we know what letterforms Herodotus saw in these inscriptions? Similarly\, Biblical scholars seeking the “original” letters in the Tablets received by Moses had no physical remains to examine. Antiquarians sought long and hard before archaeologists in the 19th century discovered remains of the earliest alphabetic marks. Along the way\, erudite studies of magical alphabets and exotic scripts also found their way into the study of the origins of letters. \nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library\, where events are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Craft & Conceptual Art: Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join SFCB in welcoming curator Megan N. Liberty at the opening of her latest exhibition Craft & Conceptual Art: Reshaping the Legacy of Artists’ Books \nLight refreshments will be served; opening remarks at 7 pm. \nAbout the exhibition: Craft & Conceptual Art: Reshaping the Legacy of Artists’ Books focuses on the intertwined legacies of book art centers across the US whose primary goal has been to teach the craft practices of book arts\, as well as other institutions focused on distribution and collecting. Tracing the foundation and production of book art organizations across the US—including Center for Book Arts in 1974\, Printed Matter and Franklin Furnace in 1976\, Minnesota Center for Book Arts in 1983\, and San Francisco Center for the Book in 1996—this exhibition shows craft and conceptual art not to be opposites\, but rather two ends of a spectrum of book art practices. \nThe exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalog featuring additional contributions by Sur Rodney (Sur)\, David Senior\, Kayleigh Perkov\, and Tara Aisha Willis\, and a selection of reprinted historical texts. Catalogs will be available for purchase at the opening reception.
