SUMMARY:Efficient and Accessible InDesign Practices Most Designers Don't Use
DESCRIPTION:Most InDesign users—even designers who’ve been using it for 20 years—don’t use the software to its potential. That means they unknowingly waste a lot of time doing things inefficiently. Understanding the features of InDesign and knowing how to do things properly will not only save you time but actually go a long way toward accessibility. \nFind out many efficient and accessible InDesign practices that will save you time and help you make your documents more accessible. \nLearn what accessibility means when it comes to documents\, why accessibility is important for designers\, and how accessibility can actually help you as a designer. In addition\, hear common myths and misconceptions related to accessible documents. \nAbout the Presenter\nColleen Gratzer is an award-winning designer with more than 26 years of experience in graphic design and web design and development. Since 2016\, she has specialized in accessibility. She has provided accessibility training to the U.S. Department of the Interior\, at CreativePro events and appeared on many podcasts. Through Creative Boost\, she teaches plain-English accessibility to designers and developers and hosts the Design Domination podcast. Through Gratzer Graphics\, she provides design and accessibility services. She is a member of the IAAP.

SUMMARY:Mexican Rótulos: An Endangered Species?
DESCRIPTION:with Romina Hernández\nThis Letterform Lecture invites you come along for a signage journey across central Mexico City.\nAbout a year ago\, Sandra Cuevas\, the mayor of the Cuauhtémoc district in central Mexico City\, decided to remove hundreds of hand-painted signs from food stalls\, carts\, newsstands\, and street vendors. Even tamaleras with only a table and a pot had to paint everything plain white and stencil the municipality’s logo in blue. \nOvernight\, what millions of other chilangos walking across the busy city streets always thought was a given\, a part of their everyday background\, was gone. Why were these Rótulos removed while the ones on buildings remained? Why\, after a year in an ever-evolving city with bustling street commerce\, are they not back? And why are so many people sad about it? \nJoin Romina Hernández for a journey through a collection of amazing and overlooked Rótulos from México City and beyond. Explore why some folks chose to put paint on their walls instead of vinyl and how sign painting in México can be both an endangered craft and a relevant everyday activity. \n\nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library\, where events are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:A Maker of Books: Alec Bolton and his Brindabella Press
DESCRIPTION:Australia has a long history of fine printing\, which is mostly unknown outside of the country itself. ‘Printing is like religion’\, acclaimed Australian book artist Alec Bolton once said\, ‘We live in sin\, but with the hope of perfection before us.’ And while his life circled around books and writing generally\, it was his private press\, the Brindabella Press\, that won him acclaim as an Australian book arts practitioner from the 1970s until his death in 1996. Starting with one-page poems and pamphlets\, he quickly moved on to hardback and then hand-bound titles\, and sought always to print books that were both beautiful and meaningful. His editions of significant Australian writers such as Barbara Hanrahan\, Les A. Murray and Kenneth Slessor are now scarce and sought after. However\, despite these author’s importance at the heart of everything was the distinguished poet Rosemary Dobson\, his wife\, who first suggested he take up letterpress printing and who wrote three of the Press’s most beloved books. \nMichael Richards’s book contains both a comprehensive bibliography of the Brindabella Press\, as well as an account of a passionate Australian mainstream publisher and the hand-printed books he made for himself and his friends in the last decades of the twentieth century\, keeping alive letterpress skills that were being swept away by constant changes in the printing industry. \nA virtual presentation by Michael Richards\, author\, librarian\, historian\, bookseller\, and book collector

SUMMARY:From the Bench of Nicholas Cladis
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Nicholas Cladis\nEvent Type: General event\nStart: August 3rd\, 2023 12:30 PM\nEnd: August 3rd\, 2023 1:00 PM\nSessions: 1\nIn-person or Online?: Online\n\n\n\n\nWelcome to From the Bench\, SFCB’s series of short studio tours with friends near and far. From favorite tools to works in progress\, you never know what you’ll learn about from these amazing artists. \nThis month we’ll chat with papermaker Nicholas Cladis. Nicholas is the papermaking specialist at the University of Iowa Center for the Book\, where he lectures and manages the Oakdale paper research facility. Nicholas is an active researcher and practitioner of traditional and non-traditional papermaking processes. For six years he lived and worked in Echizen\, Japan — an area with over 1\,500 years of papermaking history — and continues to maintain an active relationship with the papermaking community there. Nicholas’ studio work responds to the discipline of papermaking itself\, thereby engaging with aesthetics\, time\, material\, movement\, and personal narrative. His site-specific installations frequently appear in alternative exhibition spaces such as repurposed storehouses and barns\, where the work lives in realms of natural light and shadow. \nYou can see some of his work at his website\, nicholascladis.com

SUMMARY:An Introduction to AI for Writers with Matt Strain
DESCRIPTION:This session delivers an accessible\, actionable path to get started with AI (Artificial Intelligence). It’s designed for a non-technical audience who is curious about what AI means for your creative work. \n\n\n  \nMatt Strain recently left Adobe\, where over the course of 17 years he led teams across marketing\, strategy\, new business\, and research. He is now focused on helping “real people” prepare for the opportunities with AI. \nThe New York Times recently highlighted Matt’s unique AI-generated book\, which used AI to blend Chinese medicine and mixology\, propelling him into the realm of micro-AI celebrity. Forbes has called him the AI Whisperer. \nDuring his recent tenure at Adobe’s Research Lab\, Matt explored the intersection of AI and creativity\, collaborating with teams to bring innovative new products and services to market. He was a leader in crafting Adobe’s strategy to address fake news and disinformation\, a project that grew into the widely adopted Content Authenticity Initiative. \nIn pursuit of AI’s potential for positive impact\, Matt is now experimenting with ways to bring the astonishing power of AI to a broad set of non-technical audiences.

SUMMARY:Academy Meets the Street: Radical Journal Design and The Black Scholar
DESCRIPTION:with Amy Papaelias\, Jessica Barness\nThis lecture explores the visual and printed history of a radical academic journal launched after the ’68–’69 SF State student strikes.\n  \nThe Black Scholar: Journal of Black Studies and Research\, launched in 1969 and first printed by Graphic Arts of Marin\, was a self-proclaimed radical academic journal dedicating itself to “uniting the academy and the street” in the growing discipline of Black Studies. In this lecture\, we discuss the journal’s visual and printed history\, with a broad examination of the term “radical scholarship” and its relationship to the publishing and design of new academic journals. \nFurther\, we will look at twentieth-century intellectual periodicals to contextualize the early visual design and mission of The Black Scholar\, which remains a leading publication in the discipline. By studying the journal’s unique collaborations between the editors\, contributors\, and printers\, we explore how the design of scholarly journals helps legitimize emerging disciplines and create a distinctive visual language of their own. \nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library\, where events are free and open to all. \n  \nAmy Papaelias is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design at SUNY New Paltz. Her research focuses on the intersection of typography\, technology\, and culture. \n  \nJessica Barness is a Professor in the School of Visual Communication Design at Kent State University. Her research focuses on the dynamics of design discourse\, interactive platforms\, and critical practices of design research. \nTogether\, their ongoing collaborative research project\, What Scholarship Looks Like\, explores the visual design of academic journals across disciplines and the impact of journal design on academic culture. They co-edited the special issue of Visible Language\, Critical Making: Design and the Digital Humanities (49.3\, 2015)\, which received the 2017 Design Incubation Communication Design Educators Award for Published Research. They have presented their work at College Art Association Conference (2020)\, American Printing History Association Conference (2019)\, and the AIGA Design Educators Conference (2018) and have published articles in She Ji: The Journal of Design\, Economics\, and Innovation (2021)\, Visual Anthropology Review (2021)\, and Sciences du Design (2019).

SUMMARY:Companions of Minds and Books: H.H. and Matilda Bancroft in Their Literary Industries
DESCRIPTION:Kim Bancroft will discuss the legacy of her great-great-grandparents\, H.H. Bancroft\, historian of the West and founder of The Bancroft Library at U.C. Berkeley\, and his second wife\, Matilda Bancroft\, a writer and historian in her own right. \nAfter marrying H.H. in 1859\, Emily wrote voluminous letters from San Francisco to her family in Buffalo in the 1860s. Seven years after Emily died in 1869\, H.H. married Matilda\, who composed volumes of diaries and letters from 1876-1910\, along with oral histories. \nKim Bancroft’s book “Writing Themselves into History: Emily and Matilda Bancroft in Journals and Letters” highlights piquant details from these women’s writing\, noting political and cultural changes during those years\, as well as race\, class\, and gender differences underlying Emily and Matilda’s social observations. These women also captured the private life of a man who would become a very public figure through his writing and library. \nIn particular\, Matilda relished her ability to participate in her husband’s book-making efforts. With him\, she traveled to collect documents and stories regarding those who had settled the West and its multitudes of commerce\, cultures\, and government. Matilda learned how to edit her husband’s writing. Her work also found its way into his books\, with both her own writings and the oral histories she took. \nIn her presentation\, Kim Bancroft will focus on this remarkable couple’s companionship of shared ideals and ambitions in telling the story of the West\, though from very different perspectives\, one a public man\, the other a private woman. How these two writers of different natures contributed to literary life in California and beyond—with plentiful challenges and controversies—makes for an engaging story. \nAn in-person and virtual presentation by Kim Bancroft\, author and editor

SUMMARY:My biography is the history of California: Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo and his Recuerdos
DESCRIPTION:Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo (1807–90) grew up in Spanish California\, became a leading military and political figure in Mexican California\, and participated in some of the founding events of U.S. California\, such as the Monterey Constitutional Convention and the first legislature. Like many Mexican Californios he lost most of his land to squatter occupation and expensive legal proceedings during the first few decades of American rule. \nA generation after the U.S. conquest of California\, Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo set out to write the story of the land he knew so well. He aimed to dispel the romantic vision that was beginning to dominate the interpretation of the state’s history before the American conquest. Vallejo sought to correct misrepresentations of California’s past\, which dismissed as insignificant the pre–gold rush Spanish and Mexican periods\, and conflated them into one “Mission era.” He sought to convince the new rulers of the land in which he had been born that the Mexican people had laid the foundation for the California in which they were now all living. \nTo this end he spent more than a year and a half composing a five-volume history\, which he titled Recuerdos. It is the most complete account of California before the gold rush written by someone who resided in California at the time. \nRose Marie Beebe and Robert M. Senkewicz have translated Vallejo’s Recuerdos and have brought to light a remarkable perspective\, often firsthand\, on important events in early California history. Their efforts restore a critical chapter to the story of California and the American West. \nAn in-person and virtual presentation by Rose Marie Beebe\, professor emerita of Spanish literature at Santa Clara University and Robert M. Senkewicz\, professor emeritus of History at Santa Clara University

SUMMARY:Expand Your Typographic Potential on the Web
DESCRIPTION:with Marie Otsuka\nDuring this hands-on workshop using foundational web languages\, we will explore typographic expression on the web.\n  \nThis four-week workshop (running Thursday evenings from September 7 —28) is intended for designers new to typography in the browser and will cover how to control typography on the web. From standard typesetting to experimental techniques\, we will learn various ways to work with digital type — ranging from loading a webfont to animating variable fonts. We will approach the browser as a creative medium by developing a single-serve website that demonstrates intentional typography\, in both design and functionality. Instruction will cover ways to control visual composition and basic interactivity on the web\, using HTML & CSS. Participants will need no prior knowledge of these languages for this workshop but should be prepared to dive into coding. \n  \nMarie Otsuka is a designer and programmer working on fonts\, websites\, tools\, and books. She currently draws typefaces and develops type-oriented tools at Occupant Fonts\, while working with a range of organizations and artists as an independent web developer and graphic designer. Marie has taught various web/type-related courses at Rhode Island School of Design\, California College of the Arts\, Parsons The New School\, and the School of Visual Arts.
