SUMMARY:Salon Series 42: Trust Your Struggle
DESCRIPTION:with Robert Liu-Trujillo\, Nisha Sethi\nRob Liu-Trujillo and Nisha Sethi of Oakland-based collective Trust Your Struggle speak on graffiti and its influence on their art practices.\n  \nTrust Your Struggle is an multi-generational Oakland-based collective of artists\, educators\, and cultural workers who are dedicated to mobilising their communities on social justice\, environmental sustainability\, and community organising through public art. We are thrilled to be joined by both Nisha Sethi and Rob Liu-Trujillo who are active members of this collective\, as they speak on their relationship to graffiti\, and its impact on them as working artists in the Bay Area.  \n\nLike all Archive Salon Series events\, a recording of this presentation and panel will be available to members. \n\nRobert Liu-Trujillo is father\, husband\, artist and an author based in Oakland California. He’s the author and illustrator of Fresh Juice and has illustrated several other picture books. Reach out at www.robdontstop.com \n  \nNisha Kaur Sethi is an artist/activist born and raised in Berkeley\, California. As a woman of color who is deeply invested in uplifting her community\, Nisha’s work serves as seeds for the resistance in which bright\, bold lettering and images dance their way into the streets where they echo the chants and songs of the people. Early on\, Nisha developed a passion for typography and was deeply influenced by childhood trips to her motherland India where she was exposed to the fascinating world of hand-painted film posters. Back home in the Bay Area\, Nisha was brought up in the graffiti scene\, gravitating towards street art with powerful messages. \nNisha’s art serves as a call to action while constantly being informed by iconic political art and movements from the 1960’s. Her hand-painted posters have been carried by thousands of protestors at the Women’s March\, March for Our Lives\, UTLA Teacher’s Strike\, and Global Climate Strike. She is also a printmaker and clothing designer for her brand\, Kalakari\, where her work is manifested into wearable art. \nwww.nishaksethi.com \nwww.kalakaricrew.com \n@nisha.k.sethi

SUMMARY:Expand Your Typographic Potential on the Web
DESCRIPTION:with Marie Otsuka\nDuring this hands-on workshop using foundational web languages\, we will explore typographic expression on the web.\n  \nThis four-week workshop (running Thursday evenings from September 7 —28) is intended for designers new to typography in the browser and will cover how to control typography on the web. From standard typesetting to experimental techniques\, we will learn various ways to work with digital type — ranging from loading a webfont to animating variable fonts. We will approach the browser as a creative medium by developing a single-serve website that demonstrates intentional typography\, in both design and functionality. Instruction will cover ways to control visual composition and basic interactivity on the web\, using HTML & CSS. Participants will need no prior knowledge of these languages for this workshop but should be prepared to dive into coding. \n  \nMarie Otsuka is a designer and programmer working on fonts\, websites\, tools\, and books. She currently draws typefaces and develops type-oriented tools at Occupant Fonts\, while working with a range of organizations and artists as an independent web developer and graphic designer. Marie has taught various web/type-related courses at Rhode Island School of Design\, California College of the Arts\, Parsons The New School\, and the School of Visual Arts.

SUMMARY:Roadworks 2023: Steamroller Printing Festival
DESCRIPTION:About the Festival:\nThe San Francisco Center for the Book’s annual Roadworks Steamroller Printing Festival is an all-day public printmaking and book arts extravaganza that includes free hands-on printmaking and book arts activities\, demonstrations\, vendors\, open house\, and more. \nAbout Steamroller Printing:\nWith roots going back hundreds of years\, relief printing — a process where a protruding surface is inked and brought into contact with paper – is one of the oldest methods of printing illustrations in books. \nEach year at the Roadworks Steamroller Printing Festival we celebrate this facet of book arts history in the biggest\, most spectacular way we can think of: by printing linocuts using a 7-ton 1924 Buffalo Springfield steamroller  — provided by our friends Roots of Motive Power(link is external) — and the road surface of Rhode Island Street as an enormous makeshift printing press! A team of featured artists\, printers and steamroller operators create large-scale Classic print and smaller-scale Personal prints (details below) during the Festival. \nClassic Prints and Personal Prints are literally “print-on-demand”; they are available only during the daylong event and are limited edition. Each print purchased during SFCB’s Roadworks event helps raise funds that directly benefit San Francisco Center for the Book\, our workshops\, exhibitions\, and our free public events (like Roadworks!) \nThe Roadworks Steamroller Printing Festival has become a popular tradition in the Do.Re.Mi (Dogpatch-Potrero-Hill-Mission) Arts District of San Francisco\, attracting printmaking\, artist book\, printing\, and general art enthusiasts of all ages.

SUMMARY:Thinking With Your Hands
DESCRIPTION:with Cyrus Highsmith\nThis hands-on workshop helps you explore different ways of drawing\, making\, and seeing letters.\nIn this two-week workshop (two Wednesdays and Thursdays in a row\, starting on October 4)\, you’ll learn how letters can be drawn in many different ways. Cyrus Highsmith’s approach is based on the importance of white space and sensitivity to shapes\, a method he applies to type design as well as image making of all kinds. For Highsmith\, “thinking with your hands” is a way of seeing the world. This workshop will be a messy\, hands-on\, computer-free exploration of drawing\, making\, and thinking about letters. \nLearning Outcomes\n\nHow to maintain a sketchbook practice\nHow to sketch in different waysmHow to draw with different tools

SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture: Kenneth Gloss on a Bookseller's Improbable Finds
DESCRIPTION:Kenneth Gloss\, a rare book specialist and appraiser who runs the Brattle Book Shop in Boston and appears on national TV shows (including Antiques Roadshow)\, will speak on “improbable finds” of his decades-long career. As he describes the surprises he’s experienced while bookselling: “one day you find yourself drinking from Thomas Jefferson’s coffee service\, and the next day you’re fumigating your truck of fleas. The house you’re visiting could contain a handful of Turner watercolors\, or a roomful of live ammunition.” His talk will cover spectacular finds\, such as T.S. Eliot’s copy of The Great Gatsby and Isaac Newton’s copy of Principia Mathematica. One day\, a customer walked into the Brattle Book Shop with a Nuremberg Chronicle and a Kelmscott Chaucer! And he’s experienced some unexpected challenges\, too—when he was invited to look at “about 500” books\, he instead encountered three floors of more than 20\,000 nearly perfect dust-jacketed books that he simply had to buy (and figure out how to transport). The unusual and the extraordinary will abound in this illustrated lecture. Kenneth Gloss belongs to organizations including the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America\, International League of Antiquarian Booksellers\, Southern New England Antiquarian Booksellers\, and Committee for the Boston International Antiquarian Book Fair. He is a Fellow of the Massachusetts Historical Society and serves on the Board of Overseers of the USS Constitution Museum. \n  \nRegister for the virtual or for the in-person event.

SUMMARY:From Gutenberg to the Gallery: Five Decades of Print and Book Art
DESCRIPTION:with Harry Reese\nJoin us for an engaging lecture by Harry Reese\, the 2023 Lieberman Lecturer.\nIn The Gutenberg Galaxy (1962)\, Marshall McLuhan argued that significant changes in technology would generate massive cultural transformations that will permanently alter the form and function of the book. Fundamentals of bookmaking have not changed much since the contributions of Gutenberg\, but the cultural environments in which they have been grounded\, expanded\, and received certainly have. Effects of the electronic environment\, among other things\, allowed the book form to upgrade its status as a work of art\, and ushered in the era that we now recognize as “book arts.” Opportunities accompanying technological innovations continually provide unanticipated pathways for the book arts community to learn and flourish within our print-based media ecology. \nJoin us for an evening with Harry Reese\, this year’s Lieberman lecturer\, as he recounts his years as a graduate student at Brown University when he started the literary small press\, Turkey Press\, in partnership with his wife Sandra Liddell Reese. Their work has embraced patterns of personal discovery and dedicated workmanship that led to making\, exhibiting\, and teaching – all within the relatively new context of the book considered as a contemporary work of art. This lecture will illustrate\, through the sharing of works under the Turkey Press and Edition Reese imprints\, that as the humanities have become more visual\, the contemporary artist book demands much more attention\, conversation\, and understanding than ever before from its makers\, readers\, curators\, and collectors. \nThe annual Lieberman Lecture commemorates J. Ben Lieberman (1914–1984)\, founder and first president of the American Printing History Association. The lecture is a moveable feast\, given at a different institution each year\, by a figure distinguished in the history of printing or the book arts.
