SUMMARY:How Extensibility\, Express\, and AI will transform InDesign Workflows in 2024
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, Max Dunn shares the new features of InDesign 2024\, and will introduce Adobe Express\, exploring the many ways that Express and AI tools such as Adobe Firefly can both interoperate with\, and augment\, InDesign workflows. \nHe will discuss the Unified eXtensibility Platform or UXP. This significant new technology took a lot of brilliant people a long time to implement\, and brings InDesign’s extensibility into the modern age\, using the latest JavaScript along with REACT support and debugging tools. \nAdobe Express—Adobe’s answer to Canva—has also been blessed with sophisticated new extensibility tools (as well as AI features based on Adobe Firefly). There are two Express SDKs. The Add-in SDK lets you add features to Express. The Embed SDK lets you include Express in your applications. \nNow developers can take Adobe’s creative tools to new levels. For instance\, Max’s company\, Silicon Publishing\, has connected Express to its InDesign-based document editor. This means that users can now edit a document in a web browser\, shell out to Express to create (or process) content\, and add it back to the document\, saving it to InDesign. \nIn delving into the new creative capabilities made possible by Adobe Express and Adobe Firefly\, Max will also discuss AI and how Adobe’s offerings combine to empower modern publishing workflows. Learn how to choose between InDesign and Express\, as well as how to use the two applications together\, integrating generative AI from Adobe and others to best advantage in InDesign-centric publishing processes.

SUMMARY:Type Etiquette 101
DESCRIPTION:with Angie Wang\nDeepen your understanding of the typographic niceties of setting text—from the letter to the page.\\nThe text block is fundamental to creating any typographic system\, whether on the page or on screen. But what typeface to use and at what size? How do we determine line length and leading? And what about readability and hierarchy? \nOver the course of four Wednesday evenings (July 12 through August 2)\, this in-person workshop will examine typographic details and overarching principles\, from the letter to the page. It will begin by considering the interdependence between type size\, leading\, line length\, ragging\, and justification and use resources\, like Letterform Archive’s library of historic type specimen books. After an introduction to traditional methods of shaping the page\, students will set continuous text within the grids of a single-column and multicolumn page. \nThis workshop is for beginning typographers\, or for anyone in need of a refresher on setting a well-behaved text block. \nLearning Outcomes\n\nLearn to pay attention to the details of letterforms.\nBecome mindful of the intervals of space between letters (kerning and tracking).\nRefine awareness of typographic grain\, color\, and density as well as the silhouette of the text block.\nLearn to establish hierarchy and organization in page layout.\nPractice type etiquette!\n\nRequired Materials\n\nA laptop with Adobe InDesign installed (Basic knowledge of InDesign is required.)\nPencil\nSketchbook\n\nDiversity and Equity Scholarship\nDiversity and Equity are important to all of us at Letterform Archive\, and we are committed to increasing opportunities for underrepresented groups within the type and design communities. \nWe are offering one BIPOC/Equity scholarship seat in this workshop. \nTo apply for this scholarship\, please complete and submit to us the short form linked here at least a week prior to the start of the workshop. \nPlease note that we limit class size for this workshop\, so everyone may receive one-on-one feedback from the instructor.
