SUMMARY:The Epicenter: Rita Chang-Eppig with Carolina De Robertis
DESCRIPTION:Join Litquake’s Epicenter as we help launch Rita Chang-Eppig’s debut novel\, Deep as the Sky\, Red as the Sea\, a riveting\, roaring adventure story about a legendary Chinese pirate queen\, her fight to save her fleet from the forces allied against them\, and the dangerous price of power! \nWhen Shek Yeung sees a Portuguese sailor slay her husband\, a feared pirate\, she knows she must act swiftly or die. Instead of mourning\, Shek Yeung launches a new plan: immediately marrying her husband’s second-in-command\, and agreeing to bear him a son and heir\, in order to retain power over her half of the fleet. But larger threats loom. The Chinese Emperor has charged a brutal\, crafty nobleman with ridding the South China Seas of pirates\, and the Europeans–tired of losing ships\, men\, and money to Shek Yeung’s alliance–have new plans for the area. Even worse\, Shek Yeung’s cutthroat retributions create problems all their own. As Shek Yeung navigates new motherhood and the crises of leadership\, she must decide how long she is willing to fight\, and at what price\, or risk losing her fleet\, her new family\, and even her life. An unmissable portrait of a woman who leads with the courage and ruthlessness of our darkest and most beloved heroes. Rita appears here in conversation with author Carolina De Robertis. Books for sale from Bookshop West Portal. FREE\, $5-10 suggested donation

SUMMARY:Audiobooks: From Pre-Production to Distribution
DESCRIPTION:BAIPA President and CEO and founder of Pro Audio Voices\, Becky Parker Geist\n\n\nThere are big changes in the audiobook world as well as new production and distribution options (including AI). What does it mean for authors with an audiobook already or for those considering an audio? How can you guarantee yourself a return on your audiobook investment? Is there a way to actually build a community and audience with your audiobook? These and many more questions will be answered in this program. \nSignificant changes in the audiobook industry\, largely due to the massive growth it has been consistently experiencing over the last decade\, have closed some doors and opened others. Distribution opportunities\, in particular\, have opened up to make having an audiobook make more sense than ever before. \nInterestingly\, the challenge of getting a return on the audiobook investment has been approached from two opposite angles—reducing costs and increasing returns. But these two do not necessarily work well together. We’ll go into detail on how to approach the decisions before you for both production and distribution. \nJoin us for this juicy program on what’s happening in the audiobook world with BAIPA President and CEO of Pro Audio Voices Inc\, Becky Parker Geist! \nKey Takeaways include: \n\nHow and where to earn the highest royalties from each audiobook sale\nWhat your production options are\, how those relate to cost and success\, and how to make related decisions\nHow to build your fan base and increase your impact through the new AMPlify Audiobooks platform\nBig changes in the industry and what they mean for authors and for listeners

SUMMARY:Outer Sunset: A Novel
DESCRIPTION:Outer Sunset is a deeply felt story about the intimate place where we revise\, or live without\, our dreams. \nJim Finley—a recently retired English teacher living alone on the shifting edge of San Francisco—has been set\, unwittingly\, on the back porch of life. Trying to harmonize the voices in his head\, he sits most days by his stack of “to-do” books until\, one day\, his daughter comes home with the worst news of her life. Everything changes. As his broken heart reengages\, he steps back into a new world. He sees his ex-wife has launched into a larger life than the one they’d shared. He is surprised to find it easier to talk to his son’s immigrant girlfriend\, or even the remains of a Russian saint\, than to the young man he’s raised. He misconnects with Carol—his first date in decades—a woman he enjoys talking with but doesn’t quite hear. Set in the pre-tech calm before the turn of this century\, Outer Sunset is a deeply felt story about the intimate place where long-lasting growth occurs in our lives; how we revise\, or live without\, our dreams; how to love the flaws of those closest to you and watch a child grow away into someone better than you’d imagined; and how to be shaken by beauty amidst unimaginable loss and remain standing.

SUMMARY:Improve Your Dialogue with Mysti Berry
DESCRIPTION:Mysti Berry earned a BA in Linguistics from one of the top five undergrad programs in the country (UCSC)\, and “half an MFA” from UCLA. She has had short stories published in multiple anthologies\, including EQMM and AHMM\, and published three volumes of a charity anthology that raises money for voting rights. She’s working on a novel set in 1938 Hilo\, Hawaii\, a time and place of many different languages and voices. \nMany people think that dialog is a skill you’re either born with or you’ll never be good at. I’m here to tell you there are LOTS of things you can do to improve your dialog regardless of any genetic predispositions. I’ve coached a few folks\, including a USA Today bestselling author\, based on what I learned from Linguistics and screenwriting. I’ll share some basic tools that you can apply to your own dialog to make it reveal character AND move the plot forward. We might even try an exercise if there’s time!

SUMMARY:Best Minds: How Allen Ginsberg Made Revolutionary Poetry from Madness
DESCRIPTION:with author Stevan Weine\, M.D.\nA revelatory look at how poet Allen Ginsberg transformed experiences of mental illness and madness into some of the most powerful and widely read poems of the 20th Century. \nAllen Ginsberg’s 1956 poem “Howl” opens with one of the most resonant phrases in modern poetry: “I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness.” Thirty years later\, Ginsberg entrusted a Columbia University medical student with materials not shared with anyone else\, including psychiatric records that documented how he and his mother\, Naomi Ginsberg\, struggled with mental illness. \nIn Best Minds\, psychiatrist\, researcher\, and scholar Dr. Stevan M. Weine\, M.D.\, who was that medical student\, examines how Allen Ginsberg took his visions and psychiatric hospitalization\, his mother’s devastating illness\, confinement\, and lobotomy\, and the social upheavals of the postwar world and imaginatively transformed them. Though madness is often linked with hardship and suffering\, Ginsberg’s showed how it could also lead to profound and redemptive aesthetic\, spiritual\, and social changes. Through his revolutionary poetry and social advocacy\, Ginsberg dedicated himself to leading others toward new ways of being human and easing pain. Throughout his celebrated career Ginsberg made us feel as though we knew everything there was to know about him. However\, much has been left out about his experiences growing up with a mentally ill mother\, his visions\, and his psychiatric hospitalization. With a 40-year career studying and addressing trauma\, Dr. Weine provides a groundbreaking exploration of the poet and his creative process\, especially in relation to madness. This book examines the complex relationships between mental illness\, psychiatry\, trauma\, poetry\, and prophecy―using the access Ginsberg generously shared to offer new\, lively\, and indispensable insights into an American icon. Dr. Weine also provides new understandings of the paternalism\, treatment failures\, ethical lapses\, and limitations of American psychiatry in the 1940s and 1950s. \nIn light of these new discoveries\, the challenges Ginsberg faced appear starker and his achievements\, both as a poet and an advocate\, even more remarkable.

SUMMARY:California Burning: The Fall of Pacific Gas and Electric — and What It Means for America’s Power Grid
DESCRIPTION:Pacific Gas and Electric was a legacy company built by innovators and visionaries\, establishing California as a desirable home and economic powerhouse. In California Burning\, Wall Street Journal reporter and Pulitzer finalist Katherine Blunt examines how that legacy fell apart—unraveling a long history of deadly failures in which Pacific Gas and Electric endangered millions of Northern Californians\, through criminal neglect of its infrastructure. As PG&E prioritized profits and politics\, power lines went unchecked—until a rusted hook purchased for 56 cents in 1921 split in two\, sparking the deadliest wildfire in California history. \nBeginning with PG&E’s public reckoning after the Paradise fire\, Blunt chronicles the evolution of PG&E’s shareholder base\, from innovators who built some of California’s first long-distance power lines to aggressive investors keen on reaping dividends. Following key players through pivotal decisions and legal battles\, California Burning reveals the forces that shaped the plight of PG&E: deregulation and market-gaming led by Enron Corp.\, an unyielding push for renewable energy\, and a swift increase in wildfire risk throughout the West\, while regulators and lawmakers pushed their own agendas. \nCalifornia Burning is a deeply reported\, character-driven narrative\, the story of a disaster expanding into a much bigger exploration of accountability. It’s an American tragedy that serves as a cautionary tale for utilities across the nation—especially as climate change makes aging infrastructure more vulnerable\, with potentially fatal consequences. \nAn in-person and virtual presentation by Katherine Blunt\, journalist and author

SUMMARY:InDesign in Architecture and Landscape Design
DESCRIPTION:How about InDesign for things that grow? Or InDesign for places to work or to live in? \nIn this presentation\, Sam Luo\, a landscape designer\, will discuss the various ways that InDesign is utilized in the fields of architecture\, landscape architecture\, and urban design. The focus will be on client presentations\, presentations to the city\, scaled drawings\, and the process of preparing these drawings from AutoCAD to PDF presentations. \nSam will begin with an overview of InDesign’s capabilities and how it can be used in combination with other software such as Photoshop\, CAD\, and 3D programs like Rhino. He will also discuss how InDesign can be used to create presentations for city officials\, zoning boards\, and other stakeholders. The presentation will then shift to the use of InDesign for creating scaled drawings\, what they are\, and why it’s imperative to have scaled drawings in a presentation format through InDesign. Throughout the presentation\, Sam will share real-world examples of how they have used InDesign in their own work as a landscape designer in a multidisciplinary firm. \nAttendees will come away with a better understanding of the ways that InDesign can be used to streamline the design process not only for work related to architecture\, but for any field that requires polished and professional presentations. \nAbout the Presenter\nYu hang (Sam) Luo is a landscape designer based in San Francisco working with architects and engineers to create public and private spaces around the world. After completing his undergraduate studies at the University of British Columbia in Canada\, Sam moved south to complete his Master of Landscape Architecture degree at the University of California\, Berkeley. He has had a chance to work in multidisciplinary design firms in China\, Canada\, and the U.S. and has acquired almost a decade’s worth of experience working with and through the suite of Adobe products. In his free time\, Sam runs his own YouTube channel teaching various skills relevant to the education of students in built environment disciplines\, including InDesign. His channel currently has over 16\,000 subscribers and 1.5 million total video views.

SUMMARY:Editing With Disability/Chronic Illness
DESCRIPTION:This coffee chat centers people who work as editors and are living with disability and/or chronic illness. It is open to everyone. The idea was partly inspired by an active peer group currently hosted by the Society of Authors (https://www.societyofauthors.org/Groups/Authors-Disabilities-Illnesses-Network). \nGroup agreements that will be open for discussion at the start of the chat:\n* Disclosure (of illness/disability/etc.) is welcome. Disclosure is not required.\n* There are no requirements. We participate (or not) in the ways that work for us.\n* We take care of ourselves. Stretch\, eat\, drink\, take a break\, etc.\n* We can’t be articulate all the time. We give each other the benefit of the doubt and ask questions.\n* We keep confidentiality: Learning goes\, stories stay. \nThe online chat this Thursday will have an open agenda\, loosely focused on work-life: How do we define\, handle\, and sustain our work as editors. What kinds of projects are a good fit? How do we obtain enough but not too much work (if that is even possible in editing!)? What have we learned and what can we learn from each other? \nThe next chat will be held on Monday afternoon April 10 (RSVP at the Event Calendar). \nThis event is free to attend and open to all editors.
