SUMMARY:Best Practices: EDP (Noon Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Best Practices: Editing\, Design\, and Production\nwith David Zielonka\nPublishing pros know that editorial\, design\, and production are the heart of the publishing process. Each segment is vital for turning an idea into a book. Whether it’s dealing with the language\, layout\, or look of a project\, each step has its own internal logic and rules for how it meshes with what comes before and after. Sign up now for this latest Best Practice presentation\, which is aimed at both long-time EDP professionals and those who wonder what all the fuss is about. \n\nAn overview of the basic processes\nHow each step depends on and supports the others\nBest practices for interdepartmental delivery and transmitting projects\nHow it looks from outside authors and sales partners\n\nDavid Zielonka is the Director of Editorial\, Design\, and Production at Stanford University Press\, where he oversees a staff of eight individuals in the delivery of 140-plus academic\, trade\, and crossover titles per year. After college\, he packed books at the then-fledgling Publishers Group West. He soon discovered the classic book-production text\, Bookmaking: Editing\, Design\, Production. With that\, a 40-plus-year career was born. David has worked on K-12 and college textbooks (Addison-Wesley\, Pearson\, Cengage)\, trade professional titles (Sybex\, McGraw-Hill)\, and\, of course\, in the university press world (Smithsonian Institution Press\, Stanford). SUMMARY:Copyediting Today: The Niceties and Not-So-Niceties
DESCRIPTION:An Open and Fun Forum on Pronouns\, Short Attention Spans\, and Whatever Else Makes You Crazed and Confused.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAre the rules of copyediting and language usage changing as our culture changes? Of course they are! But how fast\, and in a good direction? \nThis PPN Professional Development session aims to provide everyone a chance to rant\, bemoan\, prescribe\, and plead about whatever sets them off. Think about arguments you’ve had with authors and marketers and offer up your experience to the group for comment. If we don’t change minds and hearts\, we’ll at least let you vent your frustrations before a very sympathetic audience! \nThis session will encourage audience participation\, and to get things started we’ll have some very brief comments by two top-notch—and very opinionated—copyeditors. \n\n\n\n\nGigi Mark started her career as an editorial assistant at Benjamin-Cummings/Addison-Wesley\, working on chemistry textbooks\, and eventually moved into the developmental editing department there as an associate editor. After a few detours into writing—public relations and marketing—she returned to book publishing\, gratefully. She spent fifteen years as a production editor at Jossey-Bass Publishers\, moonlighting as a copyeditor and proofreader\, before landing in scholarly publishing at Stanford University Press\, which was her objective all along. She has been with SUP since 2013. \nChansonette Buck is the owner and executive editor of Appaloosa WordCraft\, which provides research\, writing\, and editing for a wide range of organizational clients—mostly public policy think tanks and nonprofits. She is also a published\, award-winning poet. She holds a PhD in English from the University of California\, Berkeley.
