SUMMARY:Six Month Screenwriting Intensive
DESCRIPTION:with James Napoli \nThe art and craft of writing for the screen is a skill that all authors would do well to have in their creative arsenals. On one level\, prose fiction\, memoir\, non-fiction\, all these forms have been\, and will continue to be\, sought out by the film industry as foundations for works in the visual storytelling realm. So\, writers who bring with them a full understanding of the techniques—and very specific considerations—that go into bringing screen stories to life are adding a valuable component to their career qualifications. \nPerhaps even more importantly\, being able to offer screenplays among one’s catalogue of written works could add a new and potentially profitable set of skills to an author’s toolkit. Getting a handle on how those in movies and TV tell their stories will enrich and inspire the creative process in unexpected and energizing ways. Putting that knowledge into practice lets a writer generate a tangible art form that augments and amplifies their body of work. \nThis course is designed to guide you through the foundational elements of screenwriting\, including structural\, stylistic\, and formatting archetypes that inform script creation\, as you proceed toward a rough first draft screenplay or television pilot as the culmination of our coursework. \nWe will delve into modern standards of story construction along with the ancient roots of the traditional three-act structure. These theory elements will always be combined with hands-on writing exercises (some assigned as homework\, others taking shape “improv” style within class time)\, reading and analyzing several produced scripts\, and peer critiquing of your fellow authors’ projects as they take shape during our journey. In addition to structure\, we will go deeply into character and dialogue\, the importance of research\, and the distinct demands of forging evocative\, economical descriptive passages in screenplays.

SUMMARY:Experiments in Creativity
DESCRIPTION:with Coleman Stevenson \nIf you allow them to\, ideas for art and writing can come from absolutely anywhere. This creative generation class will put that theory to the test\, through a series of experiments in creative problem-solving\, spontaneous and chance-based play\, and other exploratory prompts that challenge you to work outside your normal modes and investigate how the creative brain works. \nPrior to the start of this series of classes\, each participant will receive a unique packet of random materials in the mail. In-class exercises and weekly assignments will ask you to work with these materials in various ways\, including an opportunity to create collaboratively at a distance. You’ll also keep a weekly journal detailing your personal process and ideas about creativity. \nAs support for this process\, we will read and discuss essays by artists and writers about the creative process. Creators working in any medium are welcome\, though you will be asked at times to cross genres. Also welcome is anyone who feels that they are “not a creative person.” This class will help you find the creative spark within. Materials fee includes all materials for class projects. \nPlease Note: We encourage you to register by January 10\, so that materials can be sent to arrive before the class begins. \nAccess Program\nWe want our writing classes and Delves to be accessible to everyone\, regardless of income and background. We understand that our tuition structure can present obstacles for some people. Our Access Program offers writing class and Delve tuitions at a reduced rate. The access program for writing classes covers 60% of the class tuition. Most writing classes have at least one access spot available.

SUMMARY:Writing the Autofiction Novella: 12-week intensive
DESCRIPTION:with Frances Badalamenti \nAutofiction is a unique genre (or non-genre) that combines the autobiographical with the fictional. In this course\, we will take a close look at the craft of autofiction. We will read novel excerpts\, short stories and novellas. We will also look at craft essays on the form. The goal over the twelve weeks is to work on a draft of a novella (if not a full draft\, then you will get a solid head start)\, which can be anywhere from 20K-40K words. \nThis course will be generative. You will be expected to write and submit a substantial amount of prose per week (1500-2500 words). We will read about 25 pages  of excerpts and craft essays each week and discuss them as a group. And there will be an ongoing discussion around goal setting and accountability with your fellow writers. This class is geared towards all levels of writers. Students will be expected to keep up with the weekly assignments (both reading and writing) and have a solid commitment to the process. \nExamples of (autofiction) writers that we will look at: Edouard Louis\, Karl Ove Knausgaard\, Ayah Akhtar\, Ben Lerner\, Zinzi Clemmons\, Garth Greenwell\, Sheila Heti\, Tao Lin\, Ocean Vuong\, Brandon Taylor and others.\n\nAccess Program\nWe want our classes to be accessible to everyone\, regardless of income and background. We understand that our tuition structure can present obstacles for some people. Our Access Program offers class registrations at a reduced rate. The access program for writing classes covers 60% of the class tuition. Most writing classes have at least one access spot available.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Modern Type Design with Kel Troughton
DESCRIPTION:During this 10-week online workshop\, which meets Tuesday evenings from January 29-April 4\, participants will create their own original typefaces as they gain an understanding of the methodologies and software used to produce high-quality digital type. \nThe primary goal of this workshop is to show participants how to systematically think about type and successfully structure the type design process. We will focus on techniques and best practices for designing and spacing type\, explore the conceptual foundations of type design\, including proofing and testing work\, and learn about the structure of type families. Participants will work in Glyphs App throughout the week and upload homework before each workshop for review. During meeting times\, participants will learn various lessons about type\, practice sketching\, and get feedback on their type projects. \nThis course is suitable for designers just starting to think about type and for designers with some type design experience\, hoping to develop their skills and processes. Some experience with drawing Bézier curves (in Adobe Illustrator\, for instance) and with typography is recommended but not required. This is a great course for anyone interested in applying to the Type West Postgraduate Certificate Program in Type Design. \nA free temporary license for Glyphs App will be made available to all participants. The class is capped at fifteen students to allow for ample one-on-one instruction.

SUMMARY:SF Bay Area + Georgia Chapters: Authentic Visibility for Editors with Jacqueline Fisch (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:The intuitive way to plan\, write\, and publish consistent content so you can market your business in an aligned and feel-good way. \nPresented by Jacqueline Fisch \nJacqueline Fisch is an author\, copywriter\, and intuitive writing coach. She’s the founder of The Intuitive Writing School\, a space for creatives who have a writing project on their heart and business owners who want to sound authentic while they make an impact on the world. \nBefore launching her writing and coaching business\, Jacq spent 13 years working in corporate communications and management-consulting for clients\, including Fortune 500 companies and the government. As a freelance copywriter\, she’s helped hundreds of clients — tech startups\, life and business coaches\, creatives\, and more learn how to communicate more authentically and stand out in a busy online world. \nAfter bouncing around between 20 homes in 20 years\, she’s decided that home is where the people are. She finds home with her husband\, two kids\, two dogs\, a cat\, a few houseplants hanging on by a thread\, and most of her sanity. \nNote: This meeting will not be recorded. \n* Cohosted with the Georgia EFA chapter

We’re excited to continue building our community of self-identifying women and non-binary design leaders in the Bay Area. Friends\, partners\, and kids are welcome! \nWomen in Leadership & Design (WILD) is an initiative of AIGA San Francisco. Our mission is to amplify women and non-binary designers’ collective power and visibility. We mobilize and energize impact in design leadership by focusing our work on connecting\, elevating\, sharing\, and educating designers in our community. Often\, we do this through events like group meals\, speaker series\, workshops\, meetups\, and more. We exist to redesign leadership\, together. Learn more about WILD here.

SUMMARY:Virtual Coffee Chat: Editors with Disabilities/Chronic Illnesses
DESCRIPTION:This coffee chat centers people who work as editors and are living with disability and/or chronic illness. It is open to everyone. The idea was partly inspired by an active peer group currently hosted by the Society of Authors (https://www.societyofauthors.org/Groups/Authors-Disabilities-Illnesses-Network). \nGroup agreements that will be open for discussion at the start of the chat:\n* Disclosure (of illness/disability/etc.) is welcome. Disclosure is not required.\n* There are no requirements. We participate (or not) in the ways that work for us.\n* We take care of ourselves. Stretch\, eat\, drink\, take a break\, etc.\n* We can’t be articulate all the time. We give each other the benefit of the doubt and ask questions.\n* We keep confidentiality: Learning goes\, stories stay. \nTopics for the online chat this Monday are currently open. If you have a conversation topic you would like to host (for this meeting or at a different day/time)\, please contact me! I also have a list of topics to bring to the meeting in case they are needed. \nThis event is free to attend and open to all editors.

SUMMARY:A Byte Sized History of Computer Typography with Ben Zotto
DESCRIPTION:This Letterform Lecture will take you on a whirlwind tour of bitmaps\, cathode rays\, and how type and computer technology have evolved together. This talk is part how-it-works and where-it-came-from\, and part love letter to what is inevitably lost to obsolescence. \nWhile print has often been the ultimate goal of “digital” typography\, there is a parallel story of type shown on screens – letters conjured up and discarded in real time. This talk will touch on the different ways letterforms have been produced on displays\, and how technology for print and technology for the screen eventually became the same thing. Fun topics include: the unique cathode ray aesthetic; the design of bitmap fonts; arcade and other games; how Bézier curves work; and tricks used to make small text legible. \nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library\, where events are free and open to all.
