DESCRIPTION:An archive survives to be revived. The archive as a limit\, a thing in a box\, is always also an opening. It opens on losses sustained\, harms inflicted\, the tenacity of survival\, and on the persistence of lineages both proud and shameful. But what is it to approach an archive\, to unlock the cabinet\, lift the top off the box\, to begin to read? It is to invite a haunting\, which nevertheless begins long before we open any books. And to invite the ghosts into the open\, one must be ready to hear what they teach. \nReading from her new book\, Mud\, Blood\, and Ghosts\, and screening a short film by Carolina Ebeid that engages archival images\, Julie Carr will tell the story of her great-grandfather\, Omer Madison Kem\, a settler in Nebraska\, a founding member of the Populist Party\, a three-term Congressman\, a practicing spiritualist\, and an avid eugenicist. Kem’s final years were spent in Oregon where he owned a power company and became a passionate advocate for the forced sterilization of all those he came to believe were “unfit” to breed. DESCRIPTION:by Coleen Curry \n  \nThe Pianel binding is a modern twist on binding structures that use metal rods at the joint\, more commonly known as piano hinges. The ‘Pianel’ structure designed by Ben Elbel uses the piano hinge as a main structural and visual feature with the piano hinge tucked away in a neat\, nifty construction\, leaving only two clean vertical lines on the outside separating the spine and boards. Shiny dots of polished brass rods complete the head and tail. \nThe process behind the result is simple but requires precision and planning. The book is a flat back with two paper covers\, however the structure can be made with leather or cloth. Careful attention to detail and precision is essential.

DESCRIPTION:Remember Me: American Carved Stone Books from the Ian Berke Collection\, curated by Mindell Dubansky\,  is a fascinating exploration of the realm where book-like objects and folk art intersect. San Francisco collector Ian Berke began collecting these intriguing artifacts during a chance encounter at an antique show in New England in 2007. Fascinated by a small\, white marble book bearing the inscription “Remembr the Maine\,” Berke’s interest was piqued\, leading him down a path of discovery that ultimately resulted in amassing a collection of over 500 of these unique pieces over seventeen years.\nThe exhibition at San Francisco Center for the Book (SFCB) invites viewers to explore a selection of intricately carved books from Berke’s collection. Plantation slaves were marched across the plains for the Gold Rush. San Quentin Prison incubated California’s carceral state. Kidnapped Chinese girls were sold in caged brothels in early San Francisco. Indian boarding schools supplied new farms and hotels with unfree child workers. \nBy looking west to California\, Jean Pfaelzer upends our understanding of slavery as a North-South struggle and reveals how the enslaved in California fought\, fled\, and resisted human bondage. For over 20 years\, the shop has been producing graphics to serve social justice campaigns and grassroots organizations. \nThis salon will feature the perspectives and insights of Sabiha Basrai\, a member of Design Action Collective\, as she delves into a curated selection of posters representing decades of movement history and demonstrates what is possible when graphic designers build long term trust and collaborative spaces centering people most impacted by systemic oppression. \nFrom the anti-war posters produced during the Bush administration\, to the original Black Lives Matter logo\, to immigrant rights work under the Trump administration – the Design Action Collective poster archive provides a story of resistance and relentless activism. \nThis event is in conjunction with Basrai’s research fellowship at the Archive which includes a pop-up exhibition in our reading room open between April 11 and May 5. \n  \nThis event is in-person and over zoom.
