SUMMARY:So Many People\, Mariana: A Happy Hour Reading with Magdalena Edwards
DESCRIPTION:Long discounted by a literary culture that actively rejected women’s writing\, Maria Judite de Carvalho’s biting and bitterly funny work has since exploded across the world. Collecting the entirety of her short works written between 1959 and 1967\, when the Salazar dictatorship and the rigid edicts of the Catholic church reigned\, the stories in So Many People\, Mariana might as well have been written today. These are tough\, unflinching accounts of women trapped by a culture that values them as workers or wives but not as people. And if they do escape their circumstances\, they are\, more often than not\, irrevocably punished by the world. Join Two Lines Press for happy hour cocktails (on them!) and be led into the sensuous dark of life under patriarchal capitalism as writer\, actor\, and translator Magdalena Edwards performs one of Carvalho’s unsparing short stories\, translated into English by Margaret Jull Costa.

SUMMARY:Neon: A Light History
DESCRIPTION:Is it possible that (once again) everything we know is wrong? Well\, in regards to the history of neon\, this may well be the case. Dydia DeLyser and Paul Greenstein have penned a brief\, but concise history of the neon sign beginning at the beginning\, and covering scandals\, murder\, fascists\, and forgotten inventors. A full-color\, lavishly illustrated electrical bodice ripper\, aficionados of neon will find this an indispensable “bible” to the history of their favorite collision of art and commerce. \nRevealing neon signs as active agents in sweeping cultural\, economic\, and political changes nationwide\, DeLyser and Greenstein introduce readers to a compelling cast of characters\, many of whom\, they show\, continue to keep neon vibrant today. Taking readers inside the signs themselves\, the authors show how each sign\, whether historic or contemporary\, is made by skilled hands—today just as they were over one hundred years ago. \nDrawing from over a decade of in-depth archival and ethnographic research as well as more than four decades of experience in the sign industry\, DeLyser and Greenstein use Los Angeles—not New York or Las Vegas—as focal point\, showing how neon signs have catalyzed urban change\, and how they continue to hold appeal for our changing communities—developing with the automobile and car-and-consumer culture in the twentieth century\, expanding from cities to towns\, and along highways to remote roadside outposts. From the earliest luminous tubing in the 1890s to the artistic creations of today\, from community-funded restorations of historic signs to ordinary-seeming business signs that have become community icons\, DeLyser and Greenstein show how\, just as neon signs lit our past\, they can now light our shared future. \nAn in-person presentation by Dydia DeLyser\, author and Associate Professor of Geography at California State University\, Fullerton\, and Paul Greenstein\, author and neon light professional

SUMMARY:Editors Helping Editors
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our “Editors Helping Editors” meeting. Bring your problems\, big and small\, as well as your thinking caps. We’ll work together to solve event-goers quandaries and questions\, which could range from common questions like how to find clients in a particular field (say academic editing) to more situation-specific issues like why a particular macro isn’t working in Word. The only topic that’s off limits is setting rates\, as that can be seen as price-fixing. However\, we can talk about rate-adjacent topics\, such as tools and data we use when setting rates\, what counts as a tax write-off\, and how/when to raise rates. \nThis event is now open to all editors and will not be recorded.

SUMMARY:Editing With Disability/Chronic Illness
DESCRIPTION:This coffee chat centers people who work as editors and are living with disability and/or chronic illness. It is open to everyone. The idea was partly inspired by an active peer group currently hosted by the Society of Authors (https://www.societyofauthors.org/Groups/Authors-Disabilities-Illnesses-Network). \nGroup agreements that will be open for discussion at the start of the chat:\n* Disclosure (of illness/disability/etc.) is welcome. Disclosure is not required.\n* There are no requirements. We participate (or not) in the ways that work for us.\n* We take care of ourselves. Stretch\, eat\, drink\, take a break\, etc.\n* We can’t be articulate all the time. We give each other the benefit of the doubt and ask questions.\n* We keep confidentiality: Learning goes\, stories stay. \nThe online chat this Thursday will have an open agenda\, loosely focused on work-life: How do we define\, handle\, and sustain our work as editors. What kinds of projects are a good fit? How do we obtain enough but not too much work (if that is even possible in editing!)? What have we learned and what can we learn from each other? \nThis event is free to attend and open to all editors.

SUMMARY:PICTURE • BOOK • TALK
DESCRIPTION:As a photographer in the fifty-seventh year of his serious effort\, David Wing will describe how his camera found its subjects\, what his working mind is like today\, and how his accumulated work has “aged” in his intellect and in his heart. \nAccompanied by a large number of slides\, Wing will talk in detail about how his pictures come to light\, and how his many recent books came to be. \nWing’s talk will try to show how his editing seems to work – he notes retrospective relationships among his photographs\, and as these become more apparent\, they seem to find independent coherence. As this happens\, sequences\, exhibitions\, and the monographs take shape. \nAn in-person and virtual presentation by David Wing\, photographer and teacher

SUMMARY:Moby Dyke: Krista Burton with Beth Lisick
DESCRIPTION:Lesbian bars have always been treasured safe spaces for their customers\, providing not only a good time but a shelter from societal alienation and outright persecution. In 1987\, there were 206 of them in America. Today\, only a couple dozen remain. How and why did this happen? What has been lost—or possibly gained—by such a decline? What transpires when marginalized communities become more accepted and mainstream? In Krista Burton‘s insightful and hilarious travelogue Moby Dyke: An Obsessive Quest to Track Down the Last Remaining Lesbian Bars in America\, she attempts to answer these questions firsthand\, venturing on an epic cross-country pilgrimage and in the process\, examining her own personal journey. In conversation with writer/performer Beth Lisick\, and held at Wild Side West\, which is featured in the book’s opening chapter.

SUMMARY:We Are the Land: A History of Native California
DESCRIPTION:Before there was such a thing as “California\,” there were the People and the Land. Manifest Destiny\, the Gold Rush\, and settler colonial society drew maps\, displaced Indigenous People\, and reshaped the land\, but they did not make California. Rather\, the lives and legacies of the people native to the land shaped the creation of California. We Are the Land is the first and most comprehensive text of its kind\, centering the long history of California around the lives and legacies of the Indigenous people who shaped it. Beginning with the ethnogenesis of California Indians\, We Are the Land recounts the centrality of the Native presence from before European colonization through statehood—paying particularly close attention to the persistence and activism of California Indians in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The book deftly contextualizes the first encounters with Europeans\, Spanish missions\, Mexican secularization\, the devastation of the Gold Rush and statehood\, genocide\, efforts to reclaim land\, and the organization and activism for sovereignty that built today’s casino economy. A text designed to fill the glaring need for an accessible overview of California Indian history\, We Are the Land will be a core resource in a variety of classroom settings\, as well as for casual readers and policymakers interested in a history that centers the native experience. \nAn in-person and virtual presentation by William J. Bauer Jr.\, enrolled citizen of the Round Valley Indian Tribes\, author\, and Professor of History at the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas \n

SUMMARY:How Extensibility\, Express\, and AI will transform InDesign Workflows in 2024
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, Max Dunn shares the new features of InDesign 2024\, and will introduce Adobe Express\, exploring the many ways that Express and AI tools such as Adobe Firefly can both interoperate with\, and augment\, InDesign workflows. \nHe will discuss the Unified eXtensibility Platform or UXP. This significant new technology took a lot of brilliant people a long time to implement\, and brings InDesign’s extensibility into the modern age\, using the latest JavaScript along with REACT support and debugging tools. \nAdobe Express—Adobe’s answer to Canva—has also been blessed with sophisticated new extensibility tools (as well as AI features based on Adobe Firefly). There are two Express SDKs. The Add-in SDK lets you add features to Express. The Embed SDK lets you include Express in your applications. \nNow developers can take Adobe’s creative tools to new levels. For instance\, Max’s company\, Silicon Publishing\, has connected Express to its InDesign-based document editor. This means that users can now edit a document in a web browser\, shell out to Express to create (or process) content\, and add it back to the document\, saving it to InDesign. \nIn delving into the new creative capabilities made possible by Adobe Express and Adobe Firefly\, Max will also discuss AI and how Adobe’s offerings combine to empower modern publishing workflows. Learn how to choose between InDesign and Express\, as well as how to use the two applications together\, integrating generative AI from Adobe and others to best advantage in InDesign-centric publishing processes.
