SUMMARY:Editing With Disability/Chronic Illness
DESCRIPTION:This coffee chat centers people who work as editors and are living with disability and/or chronic illness. It is open to everyone. The idea was partly inspired by an active peer group currently hosted by the Society of Authors (https://www.societyofauthors.org/Groups/Authors-Disabilities-Illnesses-Network). \nGroup agreements that will be open for discussion at the start of the chat:\n* Disclosure (of illness/disability/etc.) is welcome. Disclosure is not required.\n* There are no requirements. We participate (or not) in the ways that work for us.\n* We take care of ourselves. Stretch\, eat\, drink\, take a break\, etc.\n* We can’t be articulate all the time. We give each other the benefit of the doubt and ask questions.\n* We keep confidentiality: Learning goes\, stories stay. \nThe online chat this Thursday will have an open agenda\, loosely focused on work-life: How do we define\, handle\, and sustain our work as editors. What kinds of projects are a good fit? How do we obtain enough but not too much work (if that is even possible in editing!)? What have we learned and what can we learn from each other? \nThis event is free to attend and open to all editors.

SUMMARY:PICTURE • BOOK • TALK
DESCRIPTION:As a photographer in the fifty-seventh year of his serious effort\, David Wing will describe how his camera found its subjects\, what his working mind is like today\, and how his accumulated work has “aged” in his intellect and in his heart. \nAccompanied by a large number of slides\, Wing will talk in detail about how his pictures come to light\, and how his many recent books came to be. \nWing’s talk will try to show how his editing seems to work – he notes retrospective relationships among his photographs\, and as these become more apparent\, they seem to find independent coherence. As this happens\, sequences\, exhibitions\, and the monographs take shape. \nAn in-person and virtual presentation by David Wing\, photographer and teacher

SUMMARY:Moby Dyke: Krista Burton with Beth Lisick
DESCRIPTION:Lesbian bars have always been treasured safe spaces for their customers\, providing not only a good time but a shelter from societal alienation and outright persecution. In 1987\, there were 206 of them in America. Today\, only a couple dozen remain. How and why did this happen? What has been lost—or possibly gained—by such a decline? What transpires when marginalized communities become more accepted and mainstream? In Krista Burton‘s insightful and hilarious travelogue Moby Dyke: An Obsessive Quest to Track Down the Last Remaining Lesbian Bars in America\, she attempts to answer these questions firsthand\, venturing on an epic cross-country pilgrimage and in the process\, examining her own personal journey. In conversation with writer/performer Beth Lisick\, and held at Wild Side West\, which is featured in the book’s opening chapter.

SUMMARY:We Are the Land: A History of Native California
DESCRIPTION:Before there was such a thing as “California\,” there were the People and the Land. Manifest Destiny\, the Gold Rush\, and settler colonial society drew maps\, displaced Indigenous People\, and reshaped the land\, but they did not make California. Rather\, the lives and legacies of the people native to the land shaped the creation of California. We Are the Land is the first and most comprehensive text of its kind\, centering the long history of California around the lives and legacies of the Indigenous people who shaped it. Beginning with the ethnogenesis of California Indians\, We Are the Land recounts the centrality of the Native presence from before European colonization through statehood—paying particularly close attention to the persistence and activism of California Indians in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The book deftly contextualizes the first encounters with Europeans\, Spanish missions\, Mexican secularization\, the devastation of the Gold Rush and statehood\, genocide\, efforts to reclaim land\, and the organization and activism for sovereignty that built today’s casino economy. A text designed to fill the glaring need for an accessible overview of California Indian history\, We Are the Land will be a core resource in a variety of classroom settings\, as well as for casual readers and policymakers interested in a history that centers the native experience. \nAn in-person and virtual presentation by William J. Bauer Jr.\, enrolled citizen of the Round Valley Indian Tribes\, author\, and Professor of History at the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas \n

SUMMARY:San Francisco Past and Present
DESCRIPTION:Oldest San Francisco focuses on the institutions that have helped make San Francisco San Francisco\, featuring brief histories of its oldest restaurant (Tadich)\, oldest bakery (Boudin)\, oldest scientific institution (the Cal Academy). It speaks of civic fabrics—the oldest extant blue jeans (held in a vault at Levi’s) and first rainbow flag (exhibited at the GLBT Historical Society museum in the Castro). In addition to giving its version of some oft-told tales of this city\, it contains some lesser known stories\, about the world’s oldest suicide hotline\, the city’s oldest auto shop and hatmaker. \n  \nSan Francisco Scavenger has more than 300 rhyming clues that take you on a scavenger hunt through 19 different neighborhoods across the 49 square miles of the city. Each riddle includes a photo to help you find museums\, public artworks\, historical sites like the Mechanics’ Institute\, bars and restaurants\, architectural highlights\, and more. Whether you love the thrill of solving a puzzle\, have a desire to learn a little history\, feel the urge to get out and explore\, or even rediscover a city you thought you knew\, find the true spirit of San Francisco in the pages of this book.

SUMMARY:How Extensibility\, Express\, and AI will transform InDesign Workflows in 2024
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, Max Dunn shares the new features of InDesign 2024\, and will introduce Adobe Express\, exploring the many ways that Express and AI tools such as Adobe Firefly can both interoperate with\, and augment\, InDesign workflows. \nHe will discuss the Unified eXtensibility Platform or UXP. This significant new technology took a lot of brilliant people a long time to implement\, and brings InDesign’s extensibility into the modern age\, using the latest JavaScript along with REACT support and debugging tools. \nAdobe Express—Adobe’s answer to Canva—has also been blessed with sophisticated new extensibility tools (as well as AI features based on Adobe Firefly). There are two Express SDKs. The Add-in SDK lets you add features to Express. The Embed SDK lets you include Express in your applications. \nNow developers can take Adobe’s creative tools to new levels. For instance\, Max’s company\, Silicon Publishing\, has connected Express to its InDesign-based document editor. This means that users can now edit a document in a web browser\, shell out to Express to create (or process) content\, and add it back to the document\, saving it to InDesign. \nIn delving into the new creative capabilities made possible by Adobe Express and Adobe Firefly\, Max will also discuss AI and how Adobe’s offerings combine to empower modern publishing workflows. Learn how to choose between InDesign and Express\, as well as how to use the two applications together\, integrating generative AI from Adobe and others to best advantage in InDesign-centric publishing processes.

SUMMARY:Putting Pencil to Pixel
DESCRIPTION:with Angy Che \nUnlock the power of the iPad to create dynamic\, polished\, and punchy lettering pieces. No previous Procreate or lettering experience needed.\nIn this four week workshop (Thursdays\, starting on October 19)\, participants will learn how to bring words to life through the art of lettering. Although we’ll use the iPad and Apple Pencil as our main set of tools\, the same lessons and principles from this course can be applied to analog mediums. We’ll walk through the foundational skills that’ll enable you to create unique lettering pieces that can be applied to both personal and professional projects. \nWe will begin by laying a foundation for lettering approaches and understanding type anatomy while learning the technical side of working in Procreate. The second half of the workshop will build on that foundation through sketching and iterating on dynamic compositions and using a variety of techniques to create finished\, share-worthy lettering pieces. So whether you’re new to lettering\, Procreate\, or both\, you are welcome to join us on this four week journey! \nLearning Outcomes\n\nHow to use Procreate for lettering projects.\nUnderstanding letter anatomy and construction.\nHow to create strong compositions.\nHow to apply various styles and finishes to lettering pieces.\nAccess to resources related to lettering.

SUMMARY:Celebrating 150 Years of Cable Cars: Watermusic in the Track
DESCRIPTION:Join historians and authors Mike Phipps and Don Holmgren in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the cable cars in San Francisco. Phipps and Holmgren illuminate Hallidie’s journey to California\, his wire rope use in the gold mines\, plans for the Clay St Hill cable car and subsequent involvement in the patents\, and Pacific Cable Trust. \nSan Francisco’s Cable Cars are known and loved around the world\, a unique and recognizable icon of the City by the Bay. They have climbed the City’s hills\, halfway to the stars\, since 1873\, and are still going strong a century and half later. The present system is only a remnant of a once vast and even worldwide network of cable car lines. The story of San Francisco’s cable cars is a captivating one. They have had a spirited and wild history\, in keeping with the place of their birth. Once part of the pioneering effort to make San Francisco a world class city\, they have survived to the present day\, not as a mere curio or relic\, but as an active and much-loved part of the City’s transit system. A trove of historical photographs\, maps\, diagrams\, and stories help bring their chronicle to life. \nMike Phipps is a native\, fourth-generation San Franciscan and Board Member of the Friends of the Cable Car Museum. He is a graduate of both the University of California at Berkeley and Stanford University History Departments. For thirty years he has taught California and United States History\, as well as Western Civilization\, at local secondary schools and colleges. As a Director of the Friends of the Cable Car Museum\, he has given lectures and written historical articles for the museum. His article\, Hallidie’s Folly: The Story of the Clay Street Hill Railroad Cable Cars\, appeared in the Winter 2009 edition of The Argonaut. \nDon Holmgren is a native San Franciscan and a product of the public school system and the California School of Mechanical Arts\, where he majored in mechanical drawing. This was followed by training and apprenticeship programs at Enterprise Engine Company and American Can Company. He continued on with a ten-year stint as a mechanical design draftsman at the California Packing Company. His career was interrupted by two years in the US Army where he served as Artillery Surveyor. He eventually joined the Ortho Division of Chevron Chemical Company\, retiring from there as Drafting Coordinator for their Richmond Facility. In addition to his activities with the Friends of the Cable Car Museum\, Don has contributed to the writing of two books on San Francisco street railway history and authored an article for the Bay Area Railroad Association Journal.

SUMMARY:The Deserts of California\, a California Field Atlas
DESCRIPTION:With climate breakdown heating up and desertification looming over the horizon\, Obi Kaufmann leads curious adventurers on a voyage into the sage-and-ocher landscapes of the American West’s world-famous desert regions this fall in his revelatory and sumptuously illustrated new volume The Deserts of California: A California Field Atlas. As philosophical as it is geophysical\, this journey blends science and art in Kaufmann’s signature style to throw into relief ecological insights greater than either might yield alone. Through expressionistic mapmaking\, wildlife renderings\, and geographic conservation guides\, Kaufmann explores the marvels of and threats to these resilient yet sensitive ecosystems. \n“The Deserts of California presumes that hope\, like healing\, relies on time\,” writes Kaufmann. “If there is time\, there is hope. Although every desert habitat type is threatened\, very little of it is yet extinct. Despite the complexity of the threat\, everywhere there is precedent for resurgence.” \nOf a piece with his best-selling books The Forests of California (2020) and The Coasts of California (2022)\, The Deserts of California (October 2023) rounds out Kaufmann’s expansive California Lands Trilogy. Individually and collectively\, these volumes set out to transform entrenched colonialist attitudes toward the American West\, and transform our concept of nature from a resource for extraction to a shared and cherished inheritance. \nAn in-person and virtual presentation by Obi Kaufmann\, author\, illustrator\, and naturalist
