SUMMARY:Celebrating 2020 Vision & SFCB's Design Binding Intensive Students
DESCRIPTION:This event celebrates the conclusion of SFCB’s month-long Design Binding Intensive workshop\, which took place in July 2022. Workshop instructor Dominic Riley will give a brief talk; this year’s student cohort will share their completed fine bindings and stories related to creating their individual works of art.  \n2020 was the one-hundredth anniversary of the Society of Wood Engravers(link is external). To mark the occasion\, Pat Randle of the Nomad Press (link is external)collaborated with collector Nigel Hamway to create this remarkable book. In an edition of 340 copies\, 2020 Vision is being hailed as one of the most important private press books of our time. Hamway commissioned nineteen contemporary artists to create a new engraving\, also asking them to choose a historical artist who has inspired them. Additionally\, Hamway provided original blocks from his own collection for the printing of the book; Oak Knoll Press writes about 2020 Vision “The result\, printed by Nomad Letterpress at the Whittington Press\, places the engravings of twentieth-century greats – John Farleigh\, John Nash\, Monica Poole\, Geoffrey Wales\, Gertrude Hermes et al. – alongside today’s artists and presents the viewer with a snapshot of the changing nature of the engraver’s craft.”  \nOver the course of SFCB’s month-long immersive class\, students worked through the steps involved in making a fine design binding in a small group setting. In-class lessons addressed complex design execution\, leather decoration\, creative gold tooling\, and box making. Additionally\, workshop students worked closely with instructor Dominic Riley\, acquiring tips and tricks of the trade garnered from Riley’s thirty years as a fine binder\, conservator\, artist\, teacher\, and exhibitor. \n*Masks are encouraged but not required at SFCB events.

SUMMARY:Writing with constraints: Free your creativity
DESCRIPTION:With Kimberly Lee\n\nFor a creative twist\, some prose writers impose unique conditions on their work as they craft a piece. Dr. Seuss wrote Green Eggs and Ham on a bet: that he couldn’t write an entire book using only 50 words. Here’s another dare: Write about a trek through the desert without using the words “sand\,” “cactus\,” “water\,” “sun\,” and “heat.”\n  \nChallenging ourselves in this fun way can have an oddly liberating effect\, leading to rich\, resonant writing. In this generative workshop\, we’ll look at examples by writers who use these techniques\, then engage with inventive writing exercises\, freeing our own imaginations. We’ll be surprised by the ideas that spring forth—and thrilled with the original results! The workshop will include a taste of SoulCollage®\, an expressive arts method through which we’ll use creative constraints to make collages\, then write about them using specified prompts.\nAccess Program\nWe want our writing classes and Delves to be accessible to everyone\, regardless of income and background. We understand that our tuition structure can present obstacles for some people. Our Access Program offers writing class and Delve tuitions at a reduced rate. The access program for writing classes covers 60% of the class tuition. Most writing classes have at least one access spot available.

SUMMARY:What's New in InDesign 2023 (and Illy and PShop)
DESCRIPTION:Find out what’s new\, how features get added\, how you can make suggestions\, and the 411 on the guy that keeps the change database current \n  \n\n\n\n3:45-4:00 pm Pre-Presentation Networking\n\n\n4:00-5:45 pm Presentation\n\n\n\n\n\nIt’s December. Time for a look at what’s new and what’s changed in the latest version of InDesign. But as a mature program\, don’t expect a plethora of ground-breaking additions. But there are a few updates and this presentation will describe them. Plus this year\, we’re also going to take a look at what’s changed in those two InDesign plug-ins called Illustrator and Photoshop. \nBut there’s more. \nOur presenter\, James Wamser\, has kept track of every addition and every change to InDesign\, Illustrator\, and Photoshop since each of those programs were twinkles in the creators’ eyes. Can you imagine? He will take us back in time to how he got started and how he keeps track of all this information. He will also let you know how you can get FREE copies of the New Features Guides that catalog all the updates to the three programs. \nJames will also let you know how you can submit ideas for new features to Adobe engineers and how you can become part of the team that Beta tests new features. Don’t know a Beta test from an Alpha test? James will explain it to you. Finally\, he will gaze into the crystal ball and offer his take on what we might expect for InDesign 2024 and beyond.

SUMMARY:Using Short Works to Grow Your Author Business
DESCRIPTION:Matty Dalrymple discusses Using Short Works to Grow Your Author Business\, including using non-fiction books as calling cards to other income streams and using short fiction to interest readers in longer works. \nOn the non-fiction front\, Matty uses her own experience with her short non-fiction works (Taking the Short Tack: Creating Income and Connecting with Readers Using Short Fiction and The Indy Author’s Guide to Podcasting for Authors) to illustrate how the opportunities these open—consulting\, speaking engagements\, articles\, contest judging—provide far greater income than the sales of the books themselves. She shares tips on how authors can best position themselves to capitalize on their short non-fiction as a “business card” for their other offerings. \nOn the fiction front\, based on the material from Taking the Short Tack\, she discusses how authors can connect with readers using short fiction\, including using it as a reader magnet\, as audio offerings\, and as promotional material. She discusses how to use short fiction to create income\, focusing on the opportunities offered by indie publishing. And she discusses how short fiction can indirectly support a creative business by enabling authors to market test new characters\, worlds\, or genres\, or to re-start the engine of their (longer) creative work. \nOn both fronts\, Matty discusses how authors can find\, nurture\, and capitalize on these opportunities by building a community of fellow creators in the writing and publishing worlds.

SUMMARY:Googie Modern: Architectural Drawings of Armet Davis Newlove
DESCRIPTION:In Googie Modern: Architectural Drawings of Armet Davis Newlove\, authors Michael Murphy and Alan Hess take readers inside the private archives of the forward-thinking trio dubbed the “fathers of Googie.” Inspiring not just artists and filmmakers but the public at large\, their futuristic coffee shops and restaurants made dining out a space-age experience\, just as man was ready to walk on the moon. Armet Davis Newlove’s architecture captured the optimistic and forward-thinking mood in post-war America and set the bar for what would become Mid-Century Modern style. The firm’s high-concept designs shaped Southern California and then took off across the American landscape\, giving the US innovative\, practical\, and gorgeous monuments of everyday life. Each remarkable rendering demonstrates the passion and precision that went into every Armet Davis Newlove creation. Googie Modern is itself a monument to the excitement and optimism that once lined the streets of mid-century America. \nAn in-person presentation by Michael Murphy\, author\, art director\, and design professional\, and Alan Hess\, architect\, author\, and historian.

SUMMARY:Characters Who Aren't People: When Places Play a Role
DESCRIPTION:Glenda Carroll in Conversation with Vera Chan \nYou’re reading over a draft of your book. You pause\, scratch your head\, and think\, ‘this fictional café is taking over my story.” Then you decide\, that’s not a bad thing. \nFacebook Saturday Live kicks off the new year with “Characters Who Aren’t People: When Places Play a Role” or how to use location or activities as a character in your book. For example\, does your protagonist spend time in the Emergency Room or racing sailboats or is she/he/they elbow deep in baking flour? What if the character lives in Amsterdam 1942\, downtown Chicago in the 1920’s or south of the Border? \nGlenda Carroll\, author of the Trisha Carson mysteries\, will be talking about how she uses non-people characters all the time\, on the first Facebook Saturday Live in 2023. \nCarroll’s mysteries are set in the tree-lined streets of Marin\, the fog-covered Golden Gate Bridge and the ‘play ball’ atmosphere of Oracle Park\, home of the San Francisco Giants. She thinks her settings often become as important as the real characters. \nCarroll will be interviewed by Vera Chan\, NorCal MWA Board Member.
