DESCRIPTION:This coffee chat centers people who work as editors and are living with disability and/or chronic illness. It is open to everyone. The idea was partly inspired by an active peer group currently hosted by the Society of Authors (https://www.societyofauthors.org/Groups/Authors-Disabilities-Illnesses-Network). \nGroup agreements that will be open for discussion at the start of the chat:\n* Disclosure (of illness/disability/etc.) is welcome. Disclosure is not required.\n* There are no requirements. We participate (or not) in the ways that work for us.\n* We take care of ourselves. Stretch\, eat\, drink\, take a break\, etc.\n* We can’t be articulate all the time. We give each other the benefit of the doubt and ask questions.\n* We keep confidentiality: Learning goes\, stories stay. \nThe online chat this Thursday will have an open agenda\, loosely focused on work-life: How do we define\, handle\, and sustain our work as editors. What kinds of projects are a good fit? How do we obtain enough but not too much work (if that is even possible in editing!)? SUMMARY:From Bookcase to Bender Room\, and Beyond: Approaching the Centennial of Rare Book Collecting at Stanford
DESCRIPTION:In September of 1926\, Albert M. Bender turned his philanthropic focus on Stanford University Library. As one of the founders of the Book Club of California\, Bender needs no introduction to this audience who will also be familiar with his efforts to establish an appreciation for the book arts at Mills College\, San Francisco Public Library\, and other Bay Area institutions. His offer to assemble\, with the co-operation of friends\, “a collection of notable examples of fine printing to be placed on exhibition in the Stanford Library”\, was immediately embraced by faculty\, students\, and library staff. This gift was the catalyst for the creation in rapid succession of a Typographical Collection\, a Rare Book Room\, a staff position for a Keeper of Rare Books\, and\, by the end of the 1930s\, a Division of Special Collections to manage the library’s growing holdings of rare and distinctive materials. \nOver the decades\, the Stanford collections were reorganized several times and much of the provenance information about this transformative period was lost from the library catalog\, with the foundational gift eventually being dispersed. This presentation explores some notable pre-Bender acquisitions\, once held on a bookcase in the library director’s office\, before introducing the foundational gift of “Finely Printed Books” that started\, and in many ways still shapes\, the collecting program at Stanford. \nAn in-person and virtual presentation by Benjamin Albritton\, Rare Books Curator in the Department of Special Collections at Stanford Libraries

SUMMARY:Hidden Diversity: Lessons from Four Centuries of Javanese Script Heritage
DESCRIPTION:with Aditya Bayu Perdana\nTake a trip to Java\, where four centuries of script\, calligraphy\, and typography leave a treasure trove of inspiration for designers.\nThe archipelago now known as Indonesia is well known for its cultural diversity\, which extends to writing systems. Unfortunately\, everyday use of traditional Indonesian scripts\, including the Javanese script\, has largely been supplanted by the Latin alphabet. One stumbling block in many contemporary efforts to revitalize the script is the lack of appealing visual styles. However\, when we peel back the script beyond monotonous tables endlessly repeated on the internet\, the history of Javanese script shows a rich tradition of visual variation in all sorts of materials—from the calligraphic hands of palace manuscripts to display types used in magazines. \nIn this talk\, Bayu will show how he used archival Javanese materials to expand the typography of Javanese in contemporary usage. See some of the materials he collected over the years and how they were used in some of his typographic works. Hear Bayu’s personal experience working with Javanese and other Indonesian scripts\, and his ongoing efforts to learn and promote design excellence in traditional scripts. \nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library\, where events are free and open to all.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday\, June 25\, when writers Fran Wilde and Henry Lien meet for an evening of readings and conversation with Bay Area writer Cliff Winnig. \nFran Wilde‘s first novel\, Updraft\, won the Nebula and Compton Crook awards; it was followed by Cloudbound and Horizon\, completing the Bone trilogy. Her novels and short stories have been finalists for six Nebula Awards\, a World Fantasy Award\, four Hugo Awards\, four Locus Awards\, and a Lodestar. They include the Hugo and Nebula finalist The Jewel & Her Lapidary\, “Unseelie Brothers\, Ltd.\,” “Clearly Lettered in a Mostly Steady Hand\,” and “A Catalog of Storms.” Her short stories appear in Asimov’s Science Fiction\, Tor.com\, Beneath Ceaseless Skies\, Shimmer\, Nature\, Uncanny Magazine\, and multiple years’ best collections. Her nonfiction has appeared in publications including TheWashington Post\, The New York Times\, NPR\, and Tor.com. Her poetry has appeared in Fireside Fiction\, The Marlboro Review\, Articulate\, and Poetry Baltimore. Fran holds an MFA in poetry and an MA in information architecture and interaction design. Her digital media projects include games\, dynamic widgets\, and 3D immersive narratives.  She can also tie a bunch of sailing knots\, set gemstones\, and program digital minions. \nHenry Lien‘s first novel\, PEASPROUT CHEN\, FUTURE LEGEND OF SKATE AND SWORD\, was described by the NY Times as “Hermione Granger meets Crouching Tiger\, Hidden Dragon meets the Ice Capades meets Mean Girls.” The sequel PEASPROUT CHEN: BATTLE OF CHAMPIONS came out in January 2019. He may be best known for his children’s lit\, but he writes for adults as well. “I like to write about very specific things\, like Wu Liu (a sport I made up combining kung fu and figure skating)\, imperial court eunuchs\, earthquakes\, grandes dames of the Gilded Age\, underwater gardening\, and how to talk to dolphins.” Henry attended the Clarion West workshop in 2012; he has sold stories to Asimov’s\, Analog\, the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. Before he became a writer he worked as an attorney\, a fine art dealer\, and a college instructor. He was born in Taiwan and lives in Hollywood. \nDoors open at 6:00 pm; event begins at 6:30 pm. Admission is $10 (no one is turned away for lack of funds). All proceeds benefit the American Bookbinders Museum. \nAs always\, Bookshop West Portal will be on hand with copies of the authors’ works for sale. The event will be recorded for later broadcast by SOMA FM.

DESCRIPTION:Teaching the History of the Book (University of Massachusetts Press) is the first collection dedicated to book history pedagogy. Edited by Matteo Pangallo and Emily Todd and featuring contributions from a diverse range of teachers\, scholars\, and practitioners in literature\, language studies\, history\, book arts\, library science\, and archives\, the collection presents a variety of methods for teaching book history both as its own subject and as an approach to other subjects. Each of the 39 chapters describes lessons\, courses\, and programs centered on the latest and best ways of teaching undergraduate and graduate students both about and with book history. \nBeginning with chapters that apply particular pedagogical and critical theories to the book history classroom\, the book then covers effective ways to organize courses devoted to book history\, classroom activities that draw upon book history in other courses\, and an overview of selected print and digital tools for book history classes. Curtis tells the biography of immigrant actor M.B. Curtis who saved the Statue of Liberty in 1886\, though his actions were forgotten. Curtis’ rise and fall from grace is a dramatic arc that rivals anything created for stage. Actor\, producer\, real estate developer\, promoter\, hotelier\, benefactor\, and murder suspect\, M.B. Curtis’s life encompassed the highs of celebrity and fame as well as the lows of failure\, illness\, and a faltering career. \nRichard Schwartz is a historian and the author of Eccentrics\, Heroes\, and Cutthroats of Old Berkeley; Earthquake Exodus\, 1906; Berkeley 1900; and The Circle of Stones. Originally from Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania\, he graduated from Temple University with a bachelor’s degree in English Literature. An outdoor enthusiast and animal lover\, Schwartz worked on a Pennsylvania Dutch farm for two years before heading west to find higher mountains. He now lives in Berkeley\, California\, where he works as a building contractor and documents early Native American sites in the Bay Area. The Man Who Lit Lady Liberty (April 2017) is his fifth book and was selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Margaret Herrick Library to be included in their collection. The book was also recently awarded the bronze medal in the 2018 Independent Publisher Book Awards.

Thorn was a 28-year veteran writer and editor at the Rocky Mountain News\, which had a daily circulation of 300\,000 at the time of its closing in February\, 2009. She served the last 12 years of her tenure as chief book critic and editor of the book review pages. The section earned acclaim for its incisive and timely reviews\, as well as for Thorn’s weekly column about books and the publishing industry. \nIn addition\, she is the co-author of Fun Places to Go with Children in Colorado\, published by Chronicle Books. The book has enjoyed two printings and sold over 20\,000 copies.

DESCRIPTION:In 1970 John A. Lehner attended The Decorative Designers Exhibition and was captivated by the originality and variety of The Decorative Designers’ work. The Decorative Designers operated as a firm\, as opposed to individual artists\, to present publishers with designs hand-painted onto the cloth that would be used in production\, thus giving a clearer representation of the finished product. Lehner spent the next fifty years on a quest to collect all sixty-one books that were on exhibit. On display at the Book Club are all sixty-one of the books that were featured in the 1970 Decorative Designers Exhibition plus an additional thirteen books from The Decorative Designers. \nThe Exhibition will be on view July 10\, 2023 through October 23\, 2023. \nExhibition opening and remarks by John A. DESCRIPTION:with Chen Hui Jing\nIn this Letterform Lecture\, explore the pitfalls and joys of typesetting with CSS.\nA somewhat common scenario when it comes to web design is that of a designer handing over their painstakingly pixel-perfect mockups to a developer and experiencing the five stages of grief when they see the end result. This lecture will try to reconcile the two worlds by presenting a developer’s side of the story. \nOccasionally\, the designer’s work is being implemented by a developer who is not particularly aware of the intricacies of design. Often\, there is a misunderstanding of the capabilities and behaviors of what is possible on the web. We will cover an overview of web typography\, what is possible today with CSS versus the limitations of web platforms\, and what might lie ahead. \nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program.
