DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday\, July 30\, when writers Charlie Jane Anders and Kate Maruyama meet for an evening of readings and conversation with Bay Area writer Cliff Winig.\n\n\nCharlie Jane Anders  Most recently\, she wrote the young adult Unstoppable trilogy: Victories Greater Than Death\, Dreams Bigger Than Heartbreak\, and Promises Stronger Than Darkness. She’s also the author of the short story collection Even Greater Mistakes\, and Never Say You Can’t Survive (August 2021)\, a book about how to use creative writing to get through hard times. Her other books include The City in the Middle of the Night and All the Birds in the Sky. She’s won the Hugo\, Nebula\, Sturgeon\, Lambda Literary\, Crawford and Locus Awards. She co-created Escapade\, a transgender superhero\, for Marvel Comics and wrote her into the long-running New Mutants comic. And she’s currently the science fiction and fantasy book reviewer for the Washington Post.  With Annalee Newitz\, she co-hosts the podcast Our Opinions Are Correct\, and she is the emcee of San Francisco reading series Writers with Drinks. Right now she’s hard at work on a new adult novel. \nKate Maruyama‘s novel Harrowgate was published by 47North and her novella “Family Solstice” was named Best Fiction Book of 2021 by Rue Morgue Magazine. Her novella “Halloween Beyond: A Gentleman’s Suit “is out now from Crystal Lake Publishing. Her duo of novellas\, Bleak Houses: Safer & Family Solstice was launched in June at Raw Dog Screaming Press;  her non-genre novel Alterations is upcoming from Running Wild Press. Her short work appears in Asimov’s\, Entropy\, Analog Science Fiction & Fact\, Duende\, The Coachella Review\, and The Magnolia Review among others and was awarded the Uncharted Magazine Short Story Prize. SUMMARY:A Maker of Books: Alec Bolton and his Brindabella Press
DESCRIPTION:Australia has a long history of fine printing\, which is mostly unknown outside of the country itself. ‘Printing is like religion’\, acclaimed Australian book artist Alec Bolton once said\, ‘We live in sin\, but with the hope of perfection before us.’ And while his life circled around books and writing generally\, it was his private press\, the Brindabella Press\, that won him acclaim as an Australian book arts practitioner from the 1970s until his death in 1996. Starting with one-page poems and pamphlets\, he quickly moved on to hardback and then hand-bound titles\, and sought always to print books that were both beautiful and meaningful. His editions of significant Australian writers such as Barbara Hanrahan\, Les A. Murray and Kenneth Slessor are now scarce and sought after. However\, despite these author’s importance at the heart of everything was the distinguished poet Rosemary Dobson\, his wife\, who first suggested he take up letterpress printing and who wrote three of the Press’s most beloved books. \nMichael Richards’s book contains both a comprehensive bibliography of the Brindabella Press\, as well as an account of a passionate Australian mainstream publisher and the hand-printed books he made for himself and his friends in the last decades of the twentieth century\, keeping alive letterpress skills that were being swept away by constant changes in the printing industry. \nA virtual presentation by Michael Richards\, author\, librarian\, historian\, bookseller\, and book collector

Nicholas is the papermaking specialist at the University of Iowa Center for the Book\, where he lectures and manages the Oakdale paper research facility. Nicholas is an active researcher and practitioner of traditional and non-traditional papermaking processes. For six years he lived and worked in Echizen\, Japan — an area with over 1\,500 years of papermaking history — and continues to maintain an active relationship with the papermaking community there. Nicholas’ studio work responds to the discipline of papermaking itself\, thereby engaging with aesthetics\, time\, material\, movement\, and personal narrative. SUMMARY:Academy Meets the Street: Radical Journal Design and The Black Scholar
DESCRIPTION:with Amy Papaelias\, Jessica Barness\nThis lecture explores the visual and printed history of a radical academic journal launched after the ’68–’69 SF State student strikes.\n  \nThe Black Scholar: Journal of Black Studies and Research\, launched in 1969 and first printed by Graphic Arts of Marin\, was a self-proclaimed radical academic journal dedicating itself to “uniting the academy and the street” in the growing discipline of Black Studies. In this lecture\, we discuss the journal’s visual and printed history\, with a broad examination of the term “radical scholarship” and its relationship to the publishing and design of new academic journals. \nFurther\, we will look at twentieth-century intellectual periodicals to contextualize the early visual design and mission of The Black Scholar\, which remains a leading publication in the discipline. By studying the journal’s unique collaborations between the editors\, contributors\, and printers\, we explore how the design of scholarly journals helps legitimize emerging disciplines and create a distinctive visual language of their own.​​ \nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library\, where events are free and open to all. \n  \nAmy Papaelias is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design at SUNY New Paltz. Her research focuses on the intersection of typography\, technology\, and culture. \n  \nJessica Barness is a Professor in the School of Visual Communication Design at Kent State University. Her research focuses on the dynamics of design discourse\, interactive platforms\, and critical practices of design research. \nTogether\, their ongoing collaborative research project\, What Scholarship Looks Like\, explores the visual design of academic journals across disciplines and the impact of journal design on academic culture. They co-edited the special issue of Visible Language\, Critical Making: Design and the Digital Humanities (49.3\, 2015)\, which received the 2017 Design Incubation Communication Design Educators Award for Published Research. They have presented their work at College Art Association Conference (2020)\, American Printing History Association Conference (2019)\, and the AIGA Design Educators Conference (2018) and have published articles in She Ji: The Journal of Design\, Economics\, and Innovation (2021)\, Visual Anthropology Review (2021)\, and Sciences du Design (2019).
