SUMMARY:SFCB | On Adaptations and Deceptions at First Sight: a conversation with artists Viviana Martínez Carlos and Alex Nichols
DESCRIPTION:Hosted/Organized by: San Francisco Center for the Book \nDATE: Friday\, January 21\, 2022 \nTIME: doors at 6 pm; presentation begins promptly at 6:30. \nRegistration for this event is mandatory; attendees will be required to show proof of vaccination prior to the event and wear a mask while onsite/indoors at SFCB. \nClick here to register.\n\nOn Adaptations and Deceptions at First Sight from the Mexican artist Viviana Martínez Carlos is a collaborative artist book which narrates the biological adaptation of the palm tree on the urban landscape of California\, published by Entropico Ediciones. \nThe palm tree image is one of the most prominent symbols in the collective memory of the State of California. Utilizing imagery from the public domain dated between the years 1880 and 1920 as well as contemporary photographs by Martínez Carlos\, On Adaptations and Deceptions at First Sight presents the palm tree as an inhabitant transplanted to this time and place. Brief descriptions of biological adaptations of the palm tree and reflections on the construction of the landscape are mixed in the texts. \nMartínez Carlos will be in conversation with San Francisco based conceptual artist Alex Nichols\, and focus on studio and research practices\, the nature of collaboration\, and how personal narrative can influence one’s body of work. \nhttps://sfcb.org/adaptations

SUMMARY:ABM and BCC | The Life and Times of Jo Mora: Iconic Artist of the American West
DESCRIPTION:Hosted/Organized by: American Bookbinders Museum and Book Club of California \nThe Life and Times of Jo Mora provides an in-depth portrait of this gifted illustrator\, painter\, writer\, cartographer\, and sculptor (1876-1947). Mora was one of the first American artists to elevate the cultural importance of the Western frontier\, presaging broad shifts in twentieth-century thought and expression. Through his celebration of the great glories of nature and of the human heart\, Mora reminds us that the subject matter of all art is life. \nThe book interweaves fascinating biographical material with Mora’s personal letters\, journal entries\, and other writings — many never before seen by the public — to provide an intimate portrait of an important yet often overlooked artist. Discover the story of Jo Mora and his rich creative career at this illustrated talk by Peter Hiller\, author\, historian\, and curator for the Jo Mora Trust Collection. \nThe Life and Times of Jo Mora is the Book Club of California’s 238th publication. It was published in two editions: a Deluxe Edition of 50 copies and a Standard Edition of 295 copies. Both are on display in the current exhibit. \nAs curator of the Jo Mora Trust and lifelong devotee of Mora’s art\, Peter Hiller is widely recognized as the foremost authority on Jo Mora. He has lived a career in the visual arts\, teaching art and photography for almost forty years. Raised in West Los Angeles\, he earned his B.A. from experimental Johnston College and his teaching credential from UCLA. \nNote: Proof of vaccination and photo ID may be required for admission\, as well as a mask. \nThe Life and Times of Jo Mora: Iconic Artist of the American West

SUMMARY:BAWiP | What Is It Like To Be A Nonprofit Board Member?
DESCRIPTION:In a world of uncertainty\, divisiveness\, and conflict\, Love-Based Leadership is more relevant now than ever. \nRather than focusing on intimidation\, power\, or fear\, leading with love leverages the most powerful force on the planet to increase employee motivation\, innovation\, and trust. This is not a presentation of kumbaya\, puppies\, kittens\, and rainbows\, but instead looks at how to increase your power and influence as a love-based leader\, all while finding meaning in the work. \nDr. Church will take you through the three pillars of Love-Based Leadership – Love of Self\, Love of Source\, and Love of Other. SUMMARY:Letterform Archive | Untangling Japanese Type with Toshi Omagari
DESCRIPTION:Hosted/Organized by: Letterform Archive \nCo-presented by Book Arts & Special Collections\, San Francisco Public Library\nOnline Lecture at Letterform Archive\nTue\, Mar 29\, 2022\n12:00pm–1:30pm PT\n\nJapan is home to one of the most curious writing systems\, one that is in fact made of three writing systems ;  four\, if you count Latin. Its complexity has been preserved and supported relatively well in the modern era\, leading to a type community large enough to call an industry. Despite fair technical support of the language on digital platforms\, practical knowledge of Japanese typography and especially typeface design is not widely known outside of Japan. \nIn this talk\, Toshi Omagari will explore the world of Japanese type\, encourage others to try Japanese lettering\, and discuss how to better execute and evaluate Japanese typography. \nThis and all Letterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate certificate program.
