SUMMARY:InDesign Goes to Prison
DESCRIPTION:Of all the things people in prison might be doing\, chances are learning InDesign doesn’t immediately come to mind. But it did for Michael Santos and\, through Prison Professors the organization he founded\, incarcerated individuals now have an additional\, if unlikely\, pathway to success. \nSantos is passionate about creating a supportive and rehabilitative environment within correctional facilities. By focusing on the acquisition of practical skills\, he and his organization provide a sense of purpose and direction for incarcerated individuals. Engaging in creative pursuits like graphic design serve as a positive outlet for self-expression\, fostering a sense of accomplishment and boosting self-esteem. \nEquipping incarcerated individuals with InDesign skills enhances their prospects for successful reintegration into society. By developing a portfolio of their work\, they can showcase their talent and skills to potential employers. But since former prisoners might not immediately find willing employers\, InDesign also opens an income opportunity while working from home. \nThrough graphic design\, incarcerated individuals can not only learn how to use visuals to communicate ideas but also to write more effectively. With these marketable skills\, individuals who have paid their debt to society are better positioned to secure employment\, reduce recidivism rates\, and become contributing members of their communities. \nYou will learn: \n\n\nWhat InDesign skills are taught to people in prison. \n\n\nSteps we can take with InDesign to lower intergenerational cycles of recidivism. \n\n\nReal-life examples of formerly incarcerated people who have made good through InDesign. \n\n\nHow the graphic design community can make a bigger impact on the lives of people in prison. \n\n\nWhy mass incarceration represents one of the greatest social injustices of our time. \n\n\nPathways to bringing courses into jails and prisons across America.

SUMMARY:Hosting Word For Word
DESCRIPTION:Off the Page\nStaged readings that are the first step in Word for Word’s production process—taking a short story from the page to the stage. Join us for the first of many steps in bringing stories to the stage. \n\n“The Secret Source” by Ben Okri \nDirected by Rotimi Agbabiaka \nTwo young people discover that the water supply has been contaminated with something that is sapping the population’s ability to question those in authority and must evade smugly complacent scientists and hostile fellow citizens in their quest to find a source of true water. \nIn the words of author Ben Okri\, “the story is a slice of reality\, a fable\, a satire\, a cautionary tale\, an immaterial finger writing a warning on a wall\, a cry in the dark\, a good old-fashioned piece of speculative fiction in a tradition as old as ‘Candide’ or the Decameron\, tales that we tell one another in the twilight of strange times.” \nFree Admission – but please RSVP! Space is limited.\n\n  \nOff the Page events are free\, but we do encourage you to make a donation\, either online here or at the venue during the reading. Word For Word humbly suggest $25 for those who can afford it.\n  \n\nWORD FOR WORD Performing Arts Company performs short works of fiction in their entirety\, preserving the author’s voice and honoring her/his intent with exciting visuals and inventive staging. SUMMARY:Frank Ingerson and George Dennison: A Bay Area Love Story in Arts & Crafts (1910-1966)
DESCRIPTION:The Splendid Disarray of Beauty (2023) tells two intertwined stories\, one of love\, the other of art. \nIn 1910\, the San Franciscans Frank Ingerson and George Dennison became permanently paired in life and love. Known among their friends and in their community as the Boys\, they remained in a de facto common law marriage for 55 years. \nIn the eastern foothills of the Santa Cruz mountains they established the first stand-alone summers-only art school in California. The school was devoted to the lifestyle and aesthetic of the American Arts & Crafts movement\, which aimed to imbue beauty into every element of day-to-day living\, taking nature as a source of inspiration in doing so. \nThe school lasted only four years but had a significant impact on the California art scene—inspiring the creation of three other summer-only art schools in Northern California and its distinguished alumni went on to found the California Society of Etchers and the ArtCenter College of Design in LA (now in Pasadena). \nIn 1915 both men held positions at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition: George was on its central committee as the chief operations officer for the Palace of Horticulture and designed the landscaping for the fair. Frank was in charge of the principal decorative arts exhibitions. \nThe men went on to form life-long friendships with famous artists and Hollywood stars\, including Olivia de Havilland\, Joan Fontaine\, Yehudi Menuhin\, Loie Fuller\, and Ruth St. Denis. Additionally\, during this time the pair cultivated a glamorous life that glittered across two continents. \nIn this talk Richard D. Mohr introduces us to two of the most interesting and admirable men you have never met\, until now. \nAn in-person and virtual presentation by Richard D. Mohr\, author and Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and of the Classics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

SUMMARY:The Epicenter: Rita Chang-Eppig with Carolina De Robertis
DESCRIPTION:Join Litquake’s Epicenter as we help launch Rita Chang-Eppig’s debut novel\, Deep as the Sky\, Red as the Sea\, a riveting\, roaring adventure story about a legendary Chinese pirate queen\, her fight to save her fleet from the forces allied against them\, and the dangerous price of power! \nWhen Shek Yeung sees a Portuguese sailor slay her husband\, a feared pirate\, she knows she must act swiftly or die. Instead of mourning\, Shek Yeung launches a new plan: immediately marrying her husband’s second-in-command\, and agreeing to bear him a son and heir\, in order to retain power over her half of the fleet. But larger threats loom. The Chinese Emperor has charged a brutal\, crafty nobleman with ridding the South China Seas of pirates\, and the Europeans–tired of losing ships\, men\, and money to Shek Yeung’s alliance–have new plans for the area. Even worse\, Shek Yeung’s cutthroat retributions create problems all their own. As Shek Yeung navigates new motherhood and the crises of leadership\, she must decide how long she is willing to fight\, and at what price\, or risk losing her fleet\, her new family\, and even her life. An unmissable portrait of a woman who leads with the courage and ruthlessness of our darkest and most beloved heroes. Rita appears here in conversation with author Carolina De Robertis. Books for sale from Bookshop West Portal. FREE\, $5-10 suggested donation

SUMMARY:SF Design Week

What does it mean for authors with an audiobook already or for those considering an audio? How can you guarantee yourself a return on your audiobook investment? Is there a way to actually build a community and audience with your audiobook? These and many more questions will be answered in this program. \nSignificant changes in the audiobook industry\, largely due to the massive growth it has been consistently experiencing over the last decade\, have closed some doors and opened others. Distribution opportunities\, in particular\, have opened up to make having an audiobook make more sense than ever before. \nInterestingly\, the challenge of getting a return on the audiobook investment has been approached from two opposite angles—reducing costs and increasing returns. SUMMARY:Outer Sunset: A Novel
DESCRIPTION:Outer Sunset is a deeply felt story about the intimate place where we revise\, or live without\, our dreams. \nJim Finley—a recently retired English teacher living alone on the shifting edge of San Francisco—has been set\, unwittingly\, on the back porch of life. Trying to harmonize the voices in his head\, he sits most days by his stack of “to-do” books until\, one day\, his daughter comes home with the worst news of her life. Everything changes. As his broken heart reengages\, he steps back into a new world. He sees his ex-wife has launched into a larger life than the one they’d shared. He is surprised to find it easier to talk to his son’s immigrant girlfriend\, or even the remains of a Russian saint\, than to the young man he’s raised. He misconnects with Carol—his first date in decades—a woman he enjoys talking with but doesn’t quite hear. Set in the pre-tech calm before the turn of this century\, Outer Sunset is a deeply felt story about the intimate place where long-lasting growth occurs in our lives; how we revise\, or live without\, our dreams; how to love the flaws of those closest to you and watch a child grow away into someone better than you’d imagined; and how to be shaken by beauty amidst unimaginable loss and remain standing.

SUMMARY:Improve Your Dialogue with Mysti Berry
DESCRIPTION:Mysti Berry earned a BA in Linguistics from one of the top five undergrad programs in the country (UCSC)\, and “half an MFA” from UCLA. She has had short stories published in multiple anthologies\, including EQMM and AHMM\, and published three volumes of a charity anthology that raises money for voting rights. She’s working on a novel set in 1938 Hilo\, Hawaii\, a time and place of many different languages and voices. \nMany people think that dialog is a skill you’re either born with or you’ll never be good at. I’m here to tell you there are LOTS of things you can do to improve your dialog regardless of any genetic predispositions. I’ve coached a few folks\, including a USA Today bestselling author\, based on what I learned from Linguistics and screenwriting. I’ll share some basic tools that you can apply to your own dialog to make it reveal character AND move the plot forward. We might even try an exercise if there’s time!

SUMMARY:Putting Pencil to Pixel with Angy Che
DESCRIPTION:Unlock the power of the iPad to create dynamic\, polished\, and punchy lettering. No previous Procreate or lettering experience is required.\nThis workshop is for anyone who is interested in bringing words to life through the art of lettering. Although we’ll be using the iPad and Apple Pencil as our main set of tools in this course\, the same lessons and principles that you’ll learn can be applied to analog mediums. Over the course of four weeks (Thursdays from May 25 through June 15)\, we’ll walk through the foundational skills that will enable you to create unique lettering pieces that can be applied to both personal and professional projects. \nWe will begin by laying a conceptual foundation for lettering approaches and type anatomy while learning the technical side of working in Procreate. The second half of the workshop will build on that foundation through sketching and iterating on dynamic compositions and using a variety of techniques to create finished\, polished lettering pieces that you’ll be proud to share. So whether you’re new to lettering\, Procreate\, or both\, you are welcome to join us on this four-week journey!
