SUMMARY:Working with First-time Authors
DESCRIPTION:Publishing is complicated\, and explaining it to authors—especially first-time and self-publishing authors—can take up hours of your valuable time. Some editors have said that the problem can be intense enough that they actually avoid working with inexperienced author clients\, because the sheer amount of time required is too hard on their profit margins. \nIn this presentation\, editor MC Calvi talks about a powerful solution to this problem\, showing how preexisting resources can be leveraged to support authors\, save time\, and enhance a freelance editor’s chances of scoring future clients. MC will also be introducing their new pay-what-you-want resource\, The Big Little Booklet of Publishing Resource Links\, so editors and authors can immediately begin implementing these strategies themselves. \nSave hours of your valuable time by using these vetted resources to help explain: \n\nHow to get a book published\nHow to self-publish\nWhat type of editing a book needs\nWhat different types of editing entail\nHow to submit a proposal\nHow to write with sensitivity\nHow to navigate rights and permissions issues\nand more!\n\nMC Calvi (they/them) is a freelance editor with eight years’ and hundreds of books’ worth of publishing experience. They have worked for publishers including New Harbinger\, North Atlantic Books\, Counterpoint Press\, Insight Editions\, and Weldon Owen International\, and specialize in self-help\, psychology\, spirituality\, New Age\, and LGBTQ books. When they’re not editing\, they enjoy reading\, writing\, tea\, flannel\, road tripping\, interior decorating\, and hanging out with animals of all kinds. They live in Los Angeles\, California. \n\nREGISTER (required)

SUMMARY:A ‘Deep City’ Approach to Climate Change: The Case of Deep Oakland
DESCRIPTION:Deep Oakland: How Geology Shaped a City\, presents a seldom-attempted blend of human and geologic history\, explaining the stories told by the physical landscape and detailing how the city has interacted with it. Wealth generated in the region from its geological resources―water\, stone\, soil and minerals―has influenced societies from the pre-contact Ohlones to the Americans of yesterday and today. So have the hazards of earthquake\, fire\, drought and changing sea level. Today\, climate change has shown us that nature and civilization are not separate realms; the idea they are is an illusion that grows ever more costly. \nThe topic of a city’s rocks and landmarks is a natural entree to a more global\, “deep time” centered standpoint that can enrich readers in new ways as they guide their communities toward more sustainable policies. The pleasures of learning to see one’s familiar surroundings in new depth\, as geoheritage\, translate to deeper engagement in determining a city’s collective future. Recent advances in geology\, from plate tectonics to digital visualizations\, have given geologists unprecedented ways to tell the histories of the cities they live in; Deep Oakland proves the power of a geologist’s approach to equip the public for policy engagement based on nature’s long-term trends and demands. \nAn in-person and virtual presentation by Andrew Alden\, geologist and geoscience writer

SUMMARY:Genre Bending: Writing Outside the Lines” with Carole Stivers
DESCRIPTION:When scientist Carole Stivers began writing science fiction\, she dreamed of readers she’d never met\, enjoying and discussing her work. But she also dreamed of acceptance in “literary circles.” She secured an agent unfamiliar with sci-fi who saw cross-over potential for her debut novel\, The Mother Code. What happened next was a crash course in the impact of genre classification on book marketing. Carole will tell you what she wished she had known before embarking on the ever-shifting seas of literary genre\, and offer tips on how you might keep your own head above water when “writing outside the lines.”

SUMMARY:The Nuts & Bolts of Text Typography
DESCRIPTION:The text block is fundamental to creating any typographic system\, whether on the page or on screen. But what typeface to use and at what size? How do we determine line length and leading? And what about readability and hierarchy? \nOver the course of two days (Saturday to Sunday\, September 14–15 from 9am–5pm)\, we will examine typographic details as well as overarching principles from the letter to the page. We will begin by considering the interdependence between type size\, leading\, line length\, ragging\, and justification. And after an introduction to traditional methods of shaping the page\, we will set continuous text within the grids of a single-column and multicolumn page. \nWe will be drawing from the extraordinary resources available to us at the Letterform Archive\, in particular their library of historic type specimen books. \nThis two-day workshop is for anyone in need of a refresher on setting a well-behaved text block. Basic knowledge of InDesign is required.

SUMMARY:Redemptive Dreams: Engaging Kevin Starr’s California
DESCRIPTION:An essential piece in California Studies\, Redemptive Dreams: Engaging Kevin Starr’s California offers the first critical engagement with the vision of California’s most ambitious interpreter. While Starr’s multifaceted and polymathic vision of California offered a unique gaze—synthesizing central features\, big themes\, and incredible problems with the propitious golden dream—his eight-volume California Dream series\, along with several other books and thousands of published articles and essays\, often puzzled historians and other scholars. Historians in the contemporary school of critical historiography often found Starr’s narrative approach—seeking to tell the internal drama of the California story—to be less attuned to the most important work happening in the field. Such a perspective fails to acknowledge key developments in historical subfields like Black and African American Studies\, Chicana/o/x Studies\, Asian Studies\, Native Studies\, and others that draw from the narrative in their critical work and how this relates to Starr’s contribution. Along with being a major figure in California institutional life\, with literary output spanning genres\, it is through the lens of his lived experience as a devout Catholic that this critical sociological perspective sheds new light on his project. With contributions from sociology\, history\, and theology\, akin to investigations appearing in Theology and California: Theological Refractions on California’s Culture (Routledge)\, Redemptive Dreams offers interdisciplinary perspectives that highlight key features inherent in interdisciplinary theological reflection on place and illuminates these diverse disciplinary discourses as they appear in Starr’s articulation of the California Dream. \nAn in-person and virtual presentation by Jason S. Sexton\, author and professor of sociology at University of California\, Los Angeles \n

SUMMARY:American Burial Ground: A New History of the Overland Trail
DESCRIPTION:In popular mythology\, the Overland Trail is typically a triumphant tale\, with plucky easterners crossing the Plains in caravans of covered wagons. But not everyone reached Oregon and California. Some 6\,600 migrants perished along the way and were buried where they fell\, often on Indigenous land. As historian Sarah Keyes illuminates\, their graves ultimately became the seeds of U.S. expansion. \nBy the 1850s\, cholera epidemics\, ordinary diseases\, and violence had remade the Trail into an American burial ground that imbued migrant deaths with symbolic power. In subsequent decades\, U.S. officials and citizens leveraged Trail graves to claim Native ground. Meanwhile\, Indigenous peoples pointed to their own sacred burial grounds to dispute these same claims and maintain their land. These efforts built on anti-removal campaigns of the 1820s and 30s\, which had established the link between death and territorial claims on which the significance of the Overland Trail came to rest. \nIn placing death at the center of the history of the Overland Trail\, American Burial Ground offers a sweeping and long overdue reinterpretation of this historic touchstone. In this telling\, westward migration was a harrowing journey weighed down by the demands of caring for the sick and dying. From a tale of triumph comes one of struggle\, defined as much by Indigenous peoples’ actions as it was by white expansion. And\, finally\, from a migration to the Pacific emerges instead a trail of graves. Graves that ultimately undergirded Native dispossession. \nAn in-person and virtual presentation by Sarah Keyes\, author\, historian\, and assistant professor of history\, University of Nevada\, Reno

SUMMARY:Ghostwriting: What It Is (and Isn’t)
DESCRIPTION:Course Description \nAccording to some publishing experts\, more than half of nonfiction books are written—in whole or in part—by ghostwriters. Although they live in the shadows of the publishing world\, anonymous and unacknowledged\, these skilled scribes often make a good living. But ghostwriting is not for everyone. Join Armin Brott for a presentation and Q&A about ghostwriting\, what it is\, what it is not\, and what it takes to do it successfully. \nInstructor Bio \nArmin Brott has written\, cowritten\, or ghostwritten more than 30 books. His own titles\, including The Expectant Father and The New Father: A Dad’s Guide to the First Year\, have sold more than 2 million copies. And many of the books he’s written for others (which\, of course\, he can’t name) have appeared on various bestseller lists\, including The New York Times.

SUMMARY:Things You Didn’t Know Data Merge Could Do
DESCRIPTION:People familiar with InDesign may be familiar with the Data Merge panel\, but may not realize the potential that it holds. By taking this tool and leveraging it with several techniques\, Data Merge can become more than just a “fancy” way of mail merging. This session will demonstrate techniques that allow users to: \n\n\nautofit type for specific frame sizes within a Data Merge; \n\n\nchange colors of type\, QR codes\, and even some graphics during a data merge; \n\n\nprepare bar graphs for use with data merge; \n\n\nswapping out paragraphs or layouts during a data merge. \n\n\nBy the way\, Colin is the guy who wrote the delightfully satirical—and Insightful—“New Features in InDesign 2024 and About Time Too!” which detailed 35 new features that InDesign 2024 should have had\, but didn’t.
