SUMMARY:Teaching the History of the Book: A Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Teaching the History of the Book (University of Massachusetts Press) is the first collection dedicated to book history pedagogy. Edited by Matteo Pangallo and Emily Todd and featuring contributions from a diverse range of teachers\, scholars\, and practitioners in literature\, language studies\, history\, book arts\, library science\, and archives\, the collection presents a variety of methods for teaching book history both as its own subject and as an approach to other subjects. Each of the 39 chapters describes lessons\, courses\, and programs centered on the latest and best ways of teaching undergraduate and graduate students both about and with book history. \nBeginning with chapters that apply particular pedagogical and critical theories to the book history classroom\, the book then covers effective ways to organize courses devoted to book history\, classroom activities that draw upon book history in other courses\, and an overview of selected print and digital tools for book history classes. Contributors draw on their own experiences in the classroom to bring to life some of the rich possibilities for teaching book history in the twenty-first century. \nA virtual presentation by the editors and selected contributors to Teaching the History of the Book (University of Massachusetts Press\, 2023)

The evening opens with a special cooking demonstration by master Chef Yan. He will share his personal Chinese-American immigrant story from his first beginnings in the food industry to his world famous televised cooking show\, to his current educational film projects and his advocacy for Chinatowns—in San Francisco and across the country. SUMMARY:The Man Who Lit Lady Liberty: The Extraordinary Rise and Fall of Actor M.B. Curtis
DESCRIPTION:with author Richard Schwartz\nA picaresque biography of immigrant and entrepreneur M.B. Curtis of San Francisco\, whose claim to fame was on stage and in silent films\, but also includes many extraordinary ventures. \nWinner of the 2018 Bronze IPPY for biography\, The Man Who Lit Lady Liberty: The Extraordinary Rise and Fall of Actor M.B. Curtis tells the biography of immigrant actor M.B. Curtis who saved the Statue of Liberty in 1886\, though his actions were forgotten. Curtis’ rise and fall from grace is a dramatic arc that rivals anything created for stage. Actor\, producer\, real estate developer\, promoter\, hotelier\, benefactor\, and murder suspect\, M.B. Curtis’s life encompassed the highs of celebrity and fame as well as the lows of failure\, illness\, and a faltering career. \nRichard Schwartz is a historian and the author of Eccentrics\, Heroes\, and Cutthroats of Old Berkeley; Earthquake Exodus\, 1906; Berkeley 1900; and The Circle of Stones. Originally from Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania\, he graduated from Temple University with a bachelor’s degree in English Literature. An outdoor enthusiast and animal lover\, Schwartz worked on a Pennsylvania Dutch farm for two years before heading west to find higher mountains. He now lives in Berkeley\, California\, where he works as a building contractor and documents early Native American sites in the Bay Area. The Man Who Lit Lady Liberty (April 2017) is his fifth book and was selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Margaret Herrick Library to be included in their collection. The book was also recently awarded the bronze medal in the 2018 Independent Publisher Book Awards.

SUMMARY:Fifty Years in the Making: A Reprise by John A. Lehner of the 1970 Decorative Designers Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In 1970 John A. Lehner attended The Decorative Designers Exhibition and was captivated by the originality and variety of The Decorative Designers’ work. The Decorative Designers operated as a firm\, as opposed to individual artists\, to present publishers with designs hand-painted onto the cloth that would be used in production\, thus giving a clearer representation of the finished product. Lehner spent the next fifty years on a quest to collect all sixty-one books that were on exhibit. On display at the Book Club are all sixty-one of the books that were featured in the 1970 Decorative Designers Exhibition plus an additional thirteen books from The Decorative Designers. \nThe Exhibition will be on view July 10\, 2023 through October 23\, 2023. \nExhibition opening and remarks by John A. DESCRIPTION:with Chen Hui Jing\nIn this Letterform Lecture\, explore the pitfalls and joys of typesetting with CSS.\nA somewhat common scenario when it comes to web design is that of a designer handing over their painstakingly pixel-perfect mockups to a developer and experiencing the five stages of grief when they see the end result. This lecture will try to reconcile the two worlds by presenting a developer’s side of the story. \nOccasionally\, the designer’s work is being implemented by a developer who is not particularly aware of the intricacies of design. Often\, there is a misunderstanding of the capabilities and behaviors of what is possible on the web. We will cover an overview of web typography\, what is possible today with CSS versus the limitations of web platforms\, and what might lie ahead. \nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library\, where events are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:PubWest Publishers Roundtable - July
DESCRIPTION:July is National Anti-Boredom Month – hop off the treadmill and into a chat with your PubWest colleagues! Today we will be talking about exhibiting at library and trade conferences. We gathered a list of about 700 contacts at our Indie Pavilion with IPC at ALA. What did we learn? What upcoming events will publishers attend and what events would they like PubWest to try and get collective space in? Let’s discuss and plan for future conference success.  PubWest roundtables are an open forum for PubWest members and guests to discuss issues in the publishing industry. Roundtables are not recorded\,.

SUMMARY:Ramona Memories: Tourism and the Shaping of Southern California
DESCRIPTION:Learn how a work of historical fiction came to define how we understand southern California’s past. \nDydia DeLyser is Associate Professor of Geography at California State University\, Fullerton. A native Californian\, she began researching the “Ramona Myth” as an undergraduate at UCLA. Her book\, “Ramona Memories: Tourism and the Shaping of Southern California” (University of Minnesota Press\, 2005) is the only scholarly\, book-length treatment of this important element of southern California’s past. Her research\, based on obscure archival sources as well as a growing personal collection of Ramona-related tourist souvenirs\, revealed that it was not the promoters and boosters who first fabulated Ramona-related attractions\, but the tourists themselves who demanded that Ramona locales become visitable tourist sites\, thus reshaping not only the region’s landscape\, but also how generations have thought about its past. \nAn in-person presentation by Dydia DeLyser\, author and Associate Professor of Geography at California State University\, Fullerton\,

SUMMARY:Type Etiquette 101
DESCRIPTION:with Angie Wang\nDeepen your understanding of the typographic niceties of setting text—from the letter to the page.\\nThe text block is fundamental to creating any typographic system\, whether on the page or on screen. But what typeface to use and at what size? How do we determine line length and leading? And what about readability and hierarchy? \nOver the course of four Wednesday evenings (July 12 through August 2)\, this in-person workshop will examine typographic details and overarching principles\, from the letter to the page. It will begin by considering the interdependence between type size\, leading\, line length\, ragging\, and justification and use resources\, like Letterform Archive’s library of historic type specimen books. After an introduction to traditional methods of shaping the page\, students will set continuous text within the grids of a single-column and multicolumn page. \nThis workshop is for beginning typographers\, or for anyone in need of a refresher on setting a well-behaved text block. \nLearning Outcomes\n\nLearn to pay attention to the details of letterforms.\nBecome mindful of the intervals of space between letters (kerning and tracking).\nRefine awareness of typographic grain\, color\, and density as well as the silhouette of the text block.\nLearn to establish hierarchy and organization in page layout.\nPractice type etiquette!\n\nRequired Materials\n\nA laptop with Adobe InDesign installed (Basic knowledge of InDesign is required.)\nPencil\nSketchbook\n\nDiversity and Equity Scholarship\nDiversity and Equity are important to all of us at Letterform Archive\, and we are committed to increasing opportunities for underrepresented groups within the type and design communities. \nWe are offering one BIPOC/Equity scholarship seat in this workshop. \nTo apply for this scholarship\, please complete and submit to us the short form linked here at least a week prior to the start of the workshop. \nPlease note that we limit class size for this workshop\, so everyone may receive one-on-one feedback from the instructor.

SUMMARY:Editors Helping Editors
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our “Editors Helping Editors” meeting. Bring your problems\, big and small\, as well as your thinking caps. We’ll work together to solve event-goers quandaries and questions\, which could range from common questions like how to find clients in a particular field (say academic editing) to more situation-specific issues like why a particular macro isn’t working in Word. The only topic that’s off limits is setting rates\, as that can be seen as price-fixing. However\, we can talk about rate-adjacent topics\, such as tools and data we use when setting rates\, what counts as a tax write-off\, and how/when to raise rates. \nThis event is now open to all editors and will not be recorded.
