SUMMARY:Efficient and Accessible InDesign Practices Most Designers Don't Use
DESCRIPTION:Most InDesign users—even designers who’ve been using it for 20 years—don’t use the software to its potential. That means they unknowingly waste a lot of time doing things inefficiently. Understanding the features of InDesign and knowing how to do things properly will not only save you time but actually go a long way toward accessibility. \nFind out many efficient and accessible InDesign practices that will save you time and help you make your documents more accessible. \nLearn what accessibility means when it comes to documents\, why accessibility is important for designers\, and how accessibility can actually help you as a designer. In addition\, hear common myths and misconceptions related to accessible documents. \nAbout the Presenter\nColleen Gratzer is an award-winning designer with more than 26 years of experience in graphic design and web design and development. Since 2016\, she has specialized in accessibility. She has provided accessibility training to the U.S. Department of the Interior\, at CreativePro events and appeared on many podcasts. Through Creative Boost\, she teaches plain-English accessibility to designers and developers and hosts the Design Domination podcast. Through Gratzer Graphics\, she provides design and accessibility services. She is a member of the IAAP.

SUMMARY:Summer Espionage
DESCRIPTION:with authors Linda Joy Myers (The Forger of Marseilles) and Leslie Absher (Spy Daughter\, Queer Girl)\nJoin us as we examine two new books about espionage—one fiction\, one non-fiction. Linda Joy Myers’ novel The Forger of Marseille undertakes topics not often covered in WWII fiction: life in Marseilles\, forging documents\, and details of escaping on foot over the Pyrenees. Leslie Absher’s memoir Spy Daughter\, Queer Girl\, examines the cost of professional and family secrets. \nThe Forger of Marseille \nIn Myers’ engrossing and poignant novel\, Sarah\, a nineteen-year-old Jewish art student escapes Nazi Germany for Paris. Her guide is Mr. Lieb\, a dear family friend who also needs to flee. Briefly\, Paris is an idyll for them both. Sarah even begins to fall in love\, her heart won over by César\, a former doctor who fought the fascists in Spain and now works in the underground. But as the Nazi threat engulfs Europe\, Sarah decides to use her artistic talents for a higher purpose. She becomes a master forger\, creating new identity papers for those in danger. Forced to make a grim and frightening journey to Marseille\, the trio faces their greatest\, and most personal\, challenge yet. In this powerful novel of war\, love\, and courage\, Myers explores identity\, ingenuity\, and the power of art to save lives. \nLinda Joy Myers has integrated her passion for history and her own struggles with intergenerational trauma into her work as a therapist and writer. The power of the truth to educate current generations about the past led Linda Joy to explore the little-known history of WWII in the weeks following the fall of France—which in turn led her to write The Forger of Marseille. She is the author of two memoirs\, Don’t Call Me Mother and Song of the Plains\, and four books on memoir writing. She’s also the founder of the National Association of Memoir Writers. You can learn more about Linda Joy’s work at www.namw.org\,http://theforgerofMarseille.com\, and www.lindajoymyersauthor.com. She lives in Berkeley\, CA. \nSpy Daughter\, Queer Girl: In Search of Truth and Acceptance in a Family of Secrets \nLeslie Absher knows the cost of keeping secrets. Growing up as the queer daughter of a father who worked for the CIA\, she understood that in her family\, there were topics that were not to be discussed. Absher also knows that there is value in speaking your truth. In her debut memoir\, Spy Daughter\, Queer Girl: In Search of Truth and Acceptance in a Family of Secrets\, Absher tells her story of searching for the truth about her father’s spy work while coming to terms with her queer identity. “Dad kept his secrets to himself\, and so did I\,” Absher writes. “Just like him\, I lived a double life. One life had my queer self in it\, and the other didn’t.” Absher ultimately decided to tell her truth\, coming out and even reconnecting with Susan\, her college crush. And she decided that her life as a spy daughter was also hers to reclaim. “I sensed a path opening before me\,” she writes. “A new story. One that was fully my own. I was finally ready to tell it.” \nLeslie Absher is a journalist and essayist. Her work has appeared in The New York Times\, Los Angeles Times\, Huffington Post\, Salon\, The Independent\, Ms.\, Greek Reporter\, and the San Francisco Chronicle. She was runner up for the X.J. Kennedy Award in Rosebud Magazine\, as well as for Bellevue Literary Review’s nonfiction contest. She received a master’s in education from Harvard\, taught G.E.D. to high school dropouts\, and currently teaches writing and study skills to middle school and high school students. She lives in Oakland with her comic book writer/lawyer wife.

SUMMARY:Mexican Rótulos: An Endangered Species?
DESCRIPTION:with Romina Hernández\nThis Letterform Lecture invites you come along for a signage journey across central Mexico City.\nAbout a year ago\, Sandra Cuevas\, the mayor of the Cuauhtémoc district in central Mexico City\, decided to remove hundreds of hand-painted signs from food stalls\, carts\, newsstands\, and street vendors. Even tamaleras with only a table and a pot had to paint everything plain white and stencil the municipality’s logo in blue. \nOvernight\, what millions of other chilangos walking across the busy city streets always thought was a given\, a part of their everyday background\, was gone. Why were these Rótulos removed while the ones on buildings remained? Why\, after a year in an ever-evolving city with bustling street commerce\, are they not back? And why are so many people sad about it? \nJoin Romina Hernández for a journey through a collection of amazing and overlooked Rótulos from México City and beyond. Explore why some folks chose to put paint on their walls instead of vinyl and how sign painting in México can be both an endangered craft and a relevant everyday activity. \n\nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library\, where events are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:A Maker of Books: Alec Bolton and his Brindabella Press
DESCRIPTION:Australia has a long history of fine printing\, which is mostly unknown outside of the country itself. ‘Printing is like religion’\, acclaimed Australian book artist Alec Bolton once said\, ‘We live in sin\, but with the hope of perfection before us.’ And while his life circled around books and writing generally\, it was his private press\, the Brindabella Press\, that won him acclaim as an Australian book arts practitioner from the 1970s until his death in 1996. Starting with one-page poems and pamphlets\, he quickly moved on to hardback and then hand-bound titles\, and sought always to print books that were both beautiful and meaningful. His editions of significant Australian writers such as Barbara Hanrahan\, Les A. Murray and Kenneth Slessor are now scarce and sought after. However\, despite these author’s importance at the heart of everything was the distinguished poet Rosemary Dobson\, his wife\, who first suggested he take up letterpress printing and who wrote three of the Press’s most beloved books. \nMichael Richards’s book contains both a comprehensive bibliography of the Brindabella Press\, as well as an account of a passionate Australian mainstream publisher and the hand-printed books he made for himself and his friends in the last decades of the twentieth century\, keeping alive letterpress skills that were being swept away by constant changes in the printing industry. \nA virtual presentation by Michael Richards\, author\, librarian\, historian\, bookseller\, and book collector

SUMMARY:An Introduction to AI for Writers with Matt Strain
DESCRIPTION:This session delivers an accessible\, actionable path to get started with AI (Artificial Intelligence). It’s designed for a non-technical audience who is curious about what AI means for your creative work. \n\n\n  \nMatt Strain recently left Adobe\, where over the course of 17 years he led teams across marketing\, strategy\, new business\, and research. He is now focused on helping “real people” prepare for the opportunities with AI. \nThe New York Times recently highlighted Matt’s unique AI-generated book\, which used AI to blend Chinese medicine and mixology\, propelling him into the realm of micro-AI celebrity. Forbes has called him the AI Whisperer. \nDuring his recent tenure at Adobe’s Research Lab\, Matt explored the intersection of AI and creativity\, collaborating with teams to bring innovative new products and services to market. He was a leader in crafting Adobe’s strategy to address fake news and disinformation\, a project that grew into the widely adopted Content Authenticity Initiative. \nIn pursuit of AI’s potential for positive impact\, Matt is now experimenting with ways to bring the astonishing power of AI to a broad set of non-technical audiences.

SUMMARY:Academy Meets the Street: Radical Journal Design and The Black Scholar
DESCRIPTION:with Amy Papaelias\, Jessica Barness\nThis lecture explores the visual and printed history of a radical academic journal launched after the ’68–’69 SF State student strikes.\n  \nThe Black Scholar: Journal of Black Studies and Research\, launched in 1969 and first printed by Graphic Arts of Marin\, was a self-proclaimed radical academic journal dedicating itself to “uniting the academy and the street” in the growing discipline of Black Studies. In this lecture\, we discuss the journal’s visual and printed history\, with a broad examination of the term “radical scholarship” and its relationship to the publishing and design of new academic journals. \nFurther\, we will look at twentieth-century intellectual periodicals to contextualize the early visual design and mission of The Black Scholar\, which remains a leading publication in the discipline. By studying the journal’s unique collaborations between the editors\, contributors\, and printers\, we explore how the design of scholarly journals helps legitimize emerging disciplines and create a distinctive visual language of their own. \nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library\, where events are free and open to all. \n  \nAmy Papaelias is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design at SUNY New Paltz. SUMMARY:Between Worlds: Page to Stage
DESCRIPTION:Join poet Irena Klepfisz with scriptwriter/actor Naomi Newman and director Bruce Bierman for a discussion about translating poetry from “page to stage.” \nHosted by Laura Sheppard\, Director of Events\, Mechanics’ Institute. \n\nYiddish Theatre Ensemble\, Berkeley\, is producing Between Worlds\, a new play based on the life and poetry of celebrated writer Irena Klepfisz. This production is inspired by Irena’s recently published book\, Her Birth and Later Years: New and Collected Poems\, 1971-2021 (Wesleyan University Press). The Jewish Book Council named Her Birth and Later Years a finalist for the Jewish Book Award in Poetry. Klepfisz was also honored by the Yiddish Book Center for the 2022 Year of Women in Yiddish. The production is part of YTE’s New Works Lab. Copies of Her Birth and Later Life are available for sale at Afikomen Books in Berkeley. \n\nThe play that will be discussed\, Between Worlds\, is conceived and written by acclaimed actress Naomi Newman in collaboration with dramaturg Zack Rogow. This original theatre piece\, directed and choregraphed by YTE co-artistic director Bruce Bierman\, is created by an ensemble of four actors. Naomi Newman\, founder of Traveling Jewish Theatre\, brings her enormous talents to the stage portraying the courageous poet\, Holocaust survivor and activist Irena Klepfisz. The cast also includes renowned musicians percussionist Barbara Borden and Susanne DiVincenzo on cello and bass. \nWeaving together a narrative story line with Irena’s poetry\, the play describes seminal moments in her life and her role as the “keeper of accounts” of a vanished world. The vignettes describe her escape from the Warsaw Ghetto and survival in war-torn Poland. After immigrating to New York\, she tells of her struggles with a new language and the pull of the world she left in Eastern Europe. Irena reveals intimacies as she explores her passions as a lesbian\, the pleasures of a life-long relationship\, and the death of a loved one. Ever present are the haunting memories of her father—a martyr of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. \nA trailblazing lesbian poet\, child Holocaust survivor\, and political activist whose work is deeply informed by socialist values\, Irena Klepfisz is a vital and individual American voice. This book is the first complete collection of her work. For fifty years\, Klepfisz has written powerful\, searching poems about relatives murdered during the war\, recent immigrants\, a lost Yiddish writer\, a Palestinian boy in Gaza\, and various people in her life. In her introduction to Klepfisz’s A Few Words in the Mother Tongue\, Adrienne Rich wrote: “[Klepfisz’s] sense of phrase\, of line\, of the shift of tone\, is almost flawless.” Her Birth and Later Years was a Finalist for the Jewish Book Award and winner of the Audre Lorde Award for Lesbian Poetry. \nYiddish Theatre Ensemble presents this first New Works Lab production with four showcase performances August 16-20 at Live Oak Theatre\, Berkeley.

SUMMARY:Editors Helping Editors
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our “Editors Helping Editors” meeting. Bring your problems\, big and small\, as well as your thinking caps. We’ll work together to solve event-goers quandaries and questions\, which could range from common questions like how to find clients in a particular field (say academic editing) to more situation-specific issues like why a particular macro isn’t working in Word. The only topic that’s off limits is setting rates\, as that can be seen as price-fixing. However\, we can talk about rate-adjacent topics\, such as tools and data we use when setting rates\, what counts as a tax write-off\, and how/when to raise rates. \nThis event is now open to all editors and will not be recorded.

SUMMARY:Companions of Minds and Books: H.H. and Matilda Bancroft in Their Literary Industries
DESCRIPTION:Kim Bancroft will discuss the legacy of her great-great-grandparents\, H.H. Bancroft\, historian of the West and founder of The Bancroft Library at U.C. Berkeley\, and his second wife\, Matilda Bancroft\, a writer and historian in her own right. \nAfter marrying H.H. in 1859\, Emily wrote voluminous letters from San Francisco to her family in Buffalo in the 1860s. Seven years after Emily died in 1869\, H.H. married Matilda\, who composed volumes of diaries and letters from 1876-1910\, along with oral histories. \nKim Bancroft’s book “Writing Themselves into History: Emily and Matilda Bancroft in Journals and Letters” highlights piquant details from these women’s writing\, noting political and cultural changes during those years\, as well as race\, class\, and gender differences underlying Emily and Matilda’s social observations. These women also captured the private life of a man who would become a very public figure through his writing and library. \nIn particular\, Matilda relished her ability to participate in her husband’s book-making efforts. With him\, she traveled to collect documents and stories regarding those who had settled the West and its multitudes of commerce\, cultures\, and government. Matilda learned how to edit her husband’s writing. Her work also found its way into his books\, with both her own writings and the oral histories she took. \nIn her presentation\, Kim Bancroft will focus on this remarkable couple’s companionship of shared ideals and ambitions in telling the story of the West\, though from very different perspectives\, one a public man\, the other a private woman. How these two writers of different natures contributed to literary life in California and beyond—with plentiful challenges and controversies—makes for an engaging story. \nAn in-person and virtual presentation by Kim Bancroft\, author and editor
