SUMMARY:Editors Helping Editors
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our “Editors Helping Editors” meeting. Bring your problems\, big and small\, as well as your thinking caps. We’ll work together to solve event-goers quandaries and questions\, which could range from common questions like how to find clients in a particular field (say academic editing) to more situation-specific issues like why a particular macro isn’t working in Word. The only topic that’s off limits is setting rates\, as that can be seen as price-fixing. However\, we can talk about rate-adjacent topics\, such as tools and data we use when setting rates\, what counts as a tax write-off\, and how/when to raise rates. \nThis month\, Erin Brenner will join us to discuss communicating with clients! \nThis event is now open to all editors and will not be recorded.

SUMMARY:A Revolver to Carry at Night
DESCRIPTION:Join author Monika Zgustova in conversation with translator and writer Sabrina Jaszi on Zgustova’s new novel\, A Revolver to Carry at Night – a captivating\, nuanced portrait of the life of Véra Nabokov\, who dedicated herself to advancing her husband Vladimir Nabokov’s writing career\, playing a vital role in the creation of his greatest works. \nVéra Nabokov was in many ways the epitome of the wife of a great man: keenly aware of her husband’s extraordinary talent\, she decided to make his success her ultimate goal\, throughout fifty-two years of marriage until his death in 1977. In a rich\, sweeping novel\, Monika Zgustova immerses us in the daily life of this remarkable couple\, offering insights into their complex personal and professional relationships. Véra considered herself an independent woman\, but was she really\, when her husband took up so much space? And without Véra\, could Vladimir Nabokov have become one of the twentieth century’s greatest writers?

SUMMARY:Putting Pencil to Pixel
DESCRIPTION:With Angy Che \n  \nUnlock the power of the iPad to create dynamic\, polished\, and punchy lettering pieces. No previous Procreate or lettering experience is required. \nIn this four day workshop (over two consecutive weekends)\, participants will learn how to bring words to life through the art of lettering. Although we’ll use the iPad and Apple Pencil as our main set of tools\, the same lessons and principles from this course can be applied to analog mediums. We’ll walk through the foundational skills that’ll enable you to create unique lettering pieces that can be applied to both personal and professional projects. \nWe will begin by laying a foundation for lettering approaches and understanding type anatomy while learning the technical side of working in Procreate. The second half of the workshop will build on that foundation through sketching and iterating on dynamic compositions and using a variety of techniques to create finished\, share-worthy lettering pieces. So whether you’re new to lettering\, Procreate\, or both\, you are welcome to join us on this four day journey!

SUMMARY:Sand Rush: The Revival of the Beach in Twentieth-Century Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:The Los Angeles shoreline is one of the most iconic natural landscapes in the United States\, if not the world. Yet\, in the early twentieth century Angelenos routinely lamented the city’s crowded\, polluted\, and eroded sands\, many of which were private and inaccessible to the public. \nBetween the 1920s and the 1960s\, LA’s engineers\, city officials\, urban planners\, and business elite worked together to transform the relatively untouched beaches into modern playgrounds for the white middle class. \nAs they opened up vast public spaces for many Angelenos to express themselves\, show off their bodies\, and forge alternative communities\, they made clear that certain groups of beachgoers\, including African Americans\, gay men and women\, and bodybuilders\, were no longer welcome. \nSand Rush not only uncovers how the Los Angeles coastline was constructed but also how this major planning and engineering project affected the lives of ordinary city-dwellers and attracted many Americans to move to Southern California. \nA virtual presentation by Elsa Devienne\, author and assistant professor in US History\, Northumbria University\, Newcastle upon Tyne\, England

SUMMARY:Editing With Disability/Chronic Illness
DESCRIPTION:This coffee chat centers people who work as editors and are living with disability and/or chronic illness. It is open to everyone. The idea was partly inspired by an active peer group currently hosted by the Society of Authors (https://www.societyofauthors.org/Groups/Authors-Disabilities-Illnesses-Network). \nGroup agreements that will be open for discussion at the start of the chat:\n* Disclosure (of illness/disability/etc.) is welcome. Disclosure is not required.\n* There are no requirements. We participate (or not) in the ways that work for us.\n* We take care of ourselves. Stretch\, eat\, drink\, take a break\, etc.\n* We can’t be articulate all the time. We give each other the benefit of the doubt and ask questions.\n* We keep confidentiality: Learning goes\, stories stay. \nThe online chat this Thursday will have an open agenda\, loosely focused on work-life: How do we define\, handle\, and sustain our work as editors. What kinds of projects are a good fit? How do we obtain enough but not too much work (if that is even possible in editing!)? What have we learned and what can we learn from each other? \nThis event is free to attend and open to all editors.

SUMMARY:Multilingual Typesetting on the Web
DESCRIPTION:with Marie Otsuka\nThis workshop will cover a variety of technical techniques for typesetting multiple scripts on websites\, with a focus on CJK writing systems. \nTypesetting different languages together can be a challenge for online projects. This 2-day intensive will review HTML and CSS techniques on formatting typography for multiple scripts\, especially with East Asian languages. We will begin with the basics of using web fonts\, including an understanding of glyph subsets and fallbacks\, and move to advanced techniques in refining typography for language-specific design conventions such as vertical typesetting. Participants will need no prior knowledge of these languages for this workshop but should be prepared to dive into code. Because the presenter’s language expertise is in English and Japanese\, some examples will be based on these two scripts but technical concepts may be applied to other languages. Participants should bring their own web project with their preferred languages to apply learnings from the workshop.

SUMMARY:Salon Series 49: A Seat at the Table: Queer*+ Intersections
DESCRIPTION:with Eve Scarborough\, Jada Simone Haynes\, Mikhail of Hearts\nTo celebrate Pride month\, the Archive features a selection of work by Queer*+ designers\, curated by members of the Collections Team. \nTo celebrate Pride month and the ongoing struggles for equity\, this salon will showcase insights and perspectives of Eve Scarborough\, Jada Simone Haynes\, and Mikhail of Hearts as stewards of the Letterform Archive’s Permanent Collection through the acts of physical care\, documentation\, and audience activation. \nThey will explore the Archive’s Queer*+ intersections from a contemporary lens by considering their lived queer experiences\, personal art practices\, and how intersectional Queer*+ identities and experiences have historically been represented or overlooked in visual culture. They seek to establish A Seat at the Table\, inviting dialogue and reflection around the following questions: \n\nWhere do we see ourselves?\nHow do we confront the colonial origins of archives in the work that we do?\nHow can we honor and invite Queer*+ artists\, designers\, educators\, and practitioners to pull up a chair and share their stories\, across our past\, present\, and future?\n\nThe spread will include objects that engage both explicitly and implicitly with queerness\, through an intersectional\, expansive\, and cross-disciplinary lens. The selection will also include objects that resonate personally\, exploring queerness through structure\, content\, and language. A Seat at the Table is a call to action to challenge dominant narratives present in institutions and strive for inclusive storytelling in art and design.
