SUMMARY:Best Practices: EDP (Noon Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Best Practices: Editing\, Design\, and Production\nwith David Zielonka\nPublishing pros know that editorial\, design\, and production are the heart of the publishing process. Each segment is vital for turning an idea into a book. Whether it’s dealing with the language\, layout\, or look of a project\, each step has its own internal logic and rules for how it meshes with what comes before and after. Sign up now for this latest Best Practice presentation\, which is aimed at both long-time EDP professionals and those who wonder what all the fuss is about. \n\nAn overview of the basic processes\nHow each step depends on and supports the others\nBest practices for interdepartmental delivery and transmitting projects\nHow it looks from outside authors and sales partners\n\nDavid Zielonka is the Director of Editorial\, Design\, and Production at Stanford University Press\, where he oversees a staff of eight individuals in the delivery of 140-plus academic\, trade\, and crossover titles per year. After college\, he packed books at the then-fledgling Publishers Group West. He soon discovered the classic book-production text\, Bookmaking: Editing\, Design\, Production. With that\, a 40-plus-year career was born. David has worked on K-12 and college textbooks (Addison-Wesley\, Pearson\, Cengage)\, trade professional titles (Sybex\, McGraw-Hill)\, and\, of course\, in the university press world (Smithsonian Institution Press\, Stanford). SUMMARY:Contentpreneurs: What Editors Should Know About Literary Agents
DESCRIPTION:What’s a literary agent do\, anyway?\n\nAnd now that self-publishing is viable\, is an agent even necessary? Bay Area literary agent Mike Larsen will give the scoop on all this and more in this presentation hosted by the San Francisco Bay Area Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA) chapter.\n\nMike and his late wife\, Elizabeth Pomada\, escaped New York publishing in the early ’70s to come to San Francisco\, where they founded the Larsen-Pomada agency. In the past few years\, Mike has transitioned to author coaching and has literally written the book on How to Write a Book Proposal\, How to Get a Literary Agent\, and Guerrilla Marketing for Authors: 100 Weapons for Selling Your Work.\n\nThis is an opportunity to hear directly from a literary agent about the process of finding an agent and writing a compelling book proposal\, insights we as editors can use to better assist our authors on their path to publishing.\n\n\n\nLearn more about Mike Larsen at larsenauthorcoaching.com.\n\n

SUMMARY:All About ISBNs and More with Carla King
DESCRIPTION:Join PPN at this month’s Noon Zoom\, featuring Carla King\, who will share her professional insider’s overview of ISBNs\, PCNs\, LCCNs\, PCIP blocks\, MARC records\, BISAC codes\, and barcodes. \nThis professional-development event is FREE and open to the public\, but registration is strongly encouraged to secure your spot. \nOVERVIEW\nOne of the biggest mistakes independent authors make is using free ISBNs—and they often discover what that decision actually costs them only after the book is published. Buy your own ISBNs and you—not a publishing platform—control the publisher identity attached to your book. Use a free ISBN\, and the consequences can cascade. \nThis session covers: \n• What an ISBN actually identifies\, and how to read one\n• Who uses ISBN metadata\, and why it matters\n• Free ISBNs: Learn what you give up and what happens when you change platforms\n• Why you need to buy ISBNs in blocks of 10 or more\n• Why U.S. publishers should purchase ISBNs only from Bowker\n• How to correctly complete the four pages of a Bowker ISBN record\n• How to clone\, update\, replace\, or retire title records\n• BISAC subject codes and discoverability\n• ISBNs\, barcodes\, and embedded prices\n• Why and how to get an LCCN through the PCN program\n• Why and how to get a PCIP block and MARC record \nThis session is for independent authors and the publishing professionals who love them. Don’t let your authors make mistakes they can’t easily undo. Help them buy\, register\, and file it right the first time\, before a shortcut quietly limits their book’s reach\, portability\, and professional identity. \nABOUT THE PRESENTER\nCarla King began her career as a Silicon Valley technical writer before moving into travel technology journalism\, blogging\, and publishing education. When self-publishing tech emerged\, she wrote a PBS column on the topic. She has self-published three motorcycle adventure memoirs and five guides to professional self-publishing\, including The Publishing Workbook for Independent Authors: Your Step-by-Step Guide and Activity Tracker to Professional Book Publishing\, Marketing & Promotion. \nGet her no-nonsense publishing advice at carlaking.com. \nRegister for FREE now!

SUMMARY:PPN Zoom Meetup
DESCRIPTION:The PPN Monthly Meetup was started in 2019 as an informal gathering of publishing professionals at a rotating location. With the onset of the pandemic\, the event moved online and became the Virtual Monthly Meetup. \nThe Monthly Meetup has become a regular appointment for people who bring their insights\, experience\, and wit to friendly\, warm gatherings. \nLook for announcements about in-person meetups in the Bay Area when safe. These virtual versions will remain ongoing as they meet the needs of those who cannot manage a commute or who are in remote locations. \nMeetups are generally held on the second Thursday of the month and are open to all persons involved in the book industry. Please join our mailing list to learn about upcoming meetups.
