SUMMARY:Letterform Archive | Elementype\, a practical guide to typographic use
DESCRIPTION:Hosted/Organized by: Letterform Archive \nElementype\, a practical guide to typographic use.\nwith TipasType\, Sandra García\, Dafne Martínez \nType West Public Workshop\nOnline Lecture at Letterform Archive\nTue\, Jul 13\, 2021\n12:00pm–1:30pm PDT \nThis talk is about a nerd dream and a book. \nAs typeface designers\, but primarily users of type\, we know that at different levels it is often complex to understand where to look for quality fonts\, how to select type for specific projects\, and how use it and make the most of it. You have to delve into typography. \nThat is why Tipastype was born from the premise of education as a means to enhance the end user. We help them understand typography as the powerful tool it is and how to give it the tangible and economic value that it entails. \nWe implemented an educational strategy that includes: social networking\, face-to-face and virtual talks\, conferences\, and workshops. \nThese efforts naturally led to a printed publication “Elementype\, a practical guide to typographic use”\, where we address basic issues on how to take advantage of typography. It is a quick and efficient reference book\, which facilitates the learning of complex content\, through agile and clear graphics and short but deep texts. \nWe are clear that typography should not be complicated to understand and put to practical use. The idea is to democratize knowledge about typography to have better and more demanding users. \nhttps://letterformarchive.org/events/view/Elementype-a-practical-guide-to-typographic-use

SUMMARY:BAEF | Tech Talk: Discussing Our Editorial Tools
DESCRIPTION:Hosted/Organized by: Bay Area Editors’ Forum \nDate: Tuesday\, June 29\, 2021\nTime: 6:00 – 7:30 pm\nLocation: Zoom presentation; Zoom log-in details will be emailed to active members \nWe’re pleased to present this forum as a joint meeting of Bay Area Editors’ Forum (BAEF) and Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA)- SF Bay Area Chapter. \nTech Talk: Discussing Our Editorial Tools \nWith the ever-expanding range of technology\, we editors do our best to keep up with what’s useful for supporting our craft: changing hardware\, evolving software\, maybe a different tool—just keeping our eyes open for ways to work more efficiently and effectively to stay competitive and enjoy our work. \nIn this “digital potluck” discussion\, let’s take a look at various tools we use in our editorial work. Join us and feel free to mention a handy tech tool you appreciate: a software remedy that works for you? computer gear that optimizes your workflow? some geeky-cool tech trick that has helped you cut through a problem? Do you use blogs\, blasts\, or social media to promote your services? As part of our discussion\, three of our fellow members (Laura Deck\, Julie Lindow\, and Kristen Tate) will each do a short demo of a program they like. \nWe can walk away with some new ideas and tips to consider\, as well as perspectives shared by our always collegial fellow members. \nBAEF South Bay Forum Coordinator David Couzens will facilitate our discussion\, supported by Karen Asbelle\, BAEF Chair\, Marilyn Schwartz\, SF Program Coordinator\, and Kristen Tate\, Co-coordinator\, EFA-SF Bay Area Chapter. \nZoom meeting link will be emailed to active BAEF and EFA members prior to the forum. \nHope to see you there! \nhttps://www.editorsforum.org/next_forum.php

SUMMARY:Mechanics' Institute | Virtual Tour of the Mechanics' Institute
DESCRIPTION:Hosted/Organized by: Mechanics’ Institute \nThis event will be conducted virtually via Zoom. Please register (button to the right) to receive the Zoom credentials. \nThe Mechanics’ Institute of San Francisco was founded at the end of 1854 with four books and a mission to start an organization to serve the vocational and social needs of the city’s mechanics\, artisans\, and industrialists. It is a favorite of avid readers\, writers\, downtown employees\, students\, film lovers\, chess players\, and the 21st century nomadic worker in search of a place for literary pursuits\, thinking\, research and study. \nIf you are a new\, long-time\, or prospective member the Virtual Tour of the Institute will orient you to our building\, include an overview of our history and mission\, and outline our current services and the benefits of membership. Tours typically take 45 to 60 minutes. We hope this will whet your appetite to see the Institute in person once the shelter-in-place order lifts. \nPlease email Taryn Edwards if you have any questions – tedwards@milibrary.org \nhttps://www.milibrary.org/events/virtual-tour-mechanics-institute-jun-23-2021
