SUMMARY:American Burial Ground: A New History of the Overland Trail
DESCRIPTION:In popular mythology\, the Overland Trail is typically a triumphant tale\, with plucky easterners crossing the Plains in caravans of covered wagons. But not everyone reached Oregon and California. Some 6\,600 migrants perished along the way and were buried where they fell\, often on Indigenous land. As historian Sarah Keyes illuminates\, their graves ultimately became the seeds of U.S. expansion. \nBy the 1850s\, cholera epidemics\, ordinary diseases\, and violence had remade the Trail into an American burial ground that imbued migrant deaths with symbolic power. In subsequent decades\, U.S. officials and citizens leveraged Trail graves to claim Native ground. Meanwhile\, Indigenous peoples pointed to their own sacred burial grounds to dispute these same claims and maintain their land. These efforts built on anti-removal campaigns of the 1820s and 30s\, which had established the link between death and territorial claims on which the significance of the Overland Trail came to rest. \nIn placing death at the center of the history of the Overland Trail\, American Burial Ground offers a sweeping and long overdue reinterpretation of this historic touchstone. In this telling\, westward migration was a harrowing journey weighed down by the demands of caring for the sick and dying. From a tale of triumph comes one of struggle\, defined as much by Indigenous peoples’ actions as it was by white expansion. And\, finally\, from a migration to the Pacific emerges instead a trail of graves. Graves that ultimately undergirded Native dispossession. \nAn in-person and virtual presentation by Sarah Keyes\, author\, historian\, and assistant professor of history\, University of Nevada\, Reno

SUMMARY:Ghostwriting: What It Is (and Isn’t)
DESCRIPTION:Course Description \nAccording to some publishing experts\, more than half of nonfiction books are written—in whole or in part—by ghostwriters. Although they live in the shadows of the publishing world\, anonymous and unacknowledged\, these skilled scribes often make a good living. But ghostwriting is not for everyone. Join Armin Brott for a presentation and Q&A about ghostwriting\, what it is\, what it is not\, and what it takes to do it successfully. \nInstructor Bio \nArmin Brott has written\, cowritten\, or ghostwritten more than 30 books. His own titles\, including The Expectant Father and The New Father: A Dad’s Guide to the First Year\, have sold more than 2 million copies. And many of the books he’s written for others (which\, of course\, he can’t name) have appeared on various bestseller lists\, including The New York Times.

SUMMARY:Things You Didn’t Know Data Merge Could Do
DESCRIPTION:People familiar with InDesign may be familiar with the Data Merge panel\, but may not realize the potential that it holds. By taking this tool and leveraging it with several techniques\, Data Merge can become more than just a “fancy” way of mail merging. This session will demonstrate techniques that allow users to: \n\n\nautofit type for specific frame sizes within a Data Merge; \n\n\nchange colors of type\, QR codes\, and even some graphics during a data merge; \n\n\nprepare bar graphs for use with data merge; \n\n\nswapping out paragraphs or layouts during a data merge. \n\n\nBy the way\, Colin is the guy who wrote the delightfully satirical—and Insightful—“New Features in InDesign 2024 and About Time Too!” which detailed 35 new features that InDesign 2024 should have had\, but didn’t.

SUMMARY:Not Your China Doll: The Wild and Shimmering Life of Anna May Wong
DESCRIPTION:Set against the glittering backdrop of Los Angeles during the gin-soaked Jazz Age and the rise of Hollywood\, this debut book celebrates Anna May Wong\, the first Asian American movie star\, to bring an unsung heroine to light and reclaim her place in cinema history. \nBefore Constance Wu\, Sandra Oh\, Awkwafina\, or Lucy Liu\, there was Anna May Wong. In her time\, she was a legendary beauty\, witty conversationalist\, and fashion icon. Plucked from her family’s laundry business in Los Angeles\, Anna May Wong rose to stardom in Douglas Fairbanks’s blockbuster The Thief of Bagdad. Fans and the press clamored to see more of this unlikely actress\, but when Hollywood repeatedly cast her in stereotypical roles\, she headed abroad in protest. \nAnna May starred in acclaimed films in Berlin\, Paris\, and London. She dazzled royalty and heads of state across several nations\, leaving trails of suitors in her wake. She returned to challenge Hollywood at its own game by speaking out about the industry’s blatant racism. She used her new stature to move away from her typecasting as the China doll or dragon lady\, and worked to reshape Asian American representation in film. \nFilled with stories of capricious directors and admiring costars\, glamorous parties and far-flung love affairs\, Not Your China Doll showcases the vibrant\, radical life of a groundbreaking artist. \nAn in-person presentation by Katie Gee Salisbury\, author and photographer

SUMMARY:Black Woman on Board: Claudia Hampton\, the California State University\, and the Fight to Save Affirmative Action
DESCRIPTION:Author Donna J. Nicol tells the extraordinary story of Dr. Claudia H. Hampton\, the California State University (CSU) system’s first Black woman trustee\, who later became the board’s first woman chair\, and her twenty-year fight (1974–94) to increase access within the CSU for historically marginalized and underrepresented groups. Amid a growing white backlash against changes brought on by the 1960s Civil Rights and Black Power Movements\, Nicol argues that Hampton enacted “sly civility” to persuade fellow trustees\, CSU system officials\, and state lawmakers to enforce federal and state affirmative action mandates. \nBlack Woman on Board explores how Hampton methodically “played the game of boardsmanship\,” using the soft power she cultivated amongst her peers to remove barriers that might have impeded the implementation and expansion of affirmative action policies and programs. In illuminating the ways that Hampton transformed the CSU as the “affirmative action trustee\,” this remarkable book makes an important contribution to the history of higher education and to the historiography of Black women’s educational leadership in the post-Civil Rights era. \nA virtual presentation by Dr. Donna J. Nicol\, associate dean\, College of Liberal Arts\, California State University\, Long Beach\, CA

SUMMARY:Pure: The Sexual Revolutions of Marilyn Chambers
DESCRIPTION:Join author Jared Stearns in conversation with cinephile Jesse Hawthorne Ficks on Stearns’ new book\, Pure: The Sexual Revolutions of Marilyn Chambers. Marilyn Chambers was the embodiment of the free-spirited Seventies\, the world’s most famous X-rated star\, and an unappreciated talent whose work in adult films hindered her dreams of becoming a serious actress. Marilyn was the first woman known primarily for her work in adult films to cross over to mainstream entertainment. She sustained a versatile three-decade career in entertainment\, including roles in dramatic plays\, a Broadway musical revue\, her own television show\, and the lead role in David Cronenberg’s film Rabid. But her success in adult films also proved to be her undoing. With recollections from family and friends\, many of whom have never spoken publicly\, along with Marilyn’s own words\, and never-before-published photos\, Jared Stearns vividly captures the revolutionary career of one of the twentieth century’s most misunderstood icons.

SUMMARY:Reading Type Specimens: From Cicero to Spoonie Diddel\, Ladies Cicerone
DESCRIPTION:There is more to the texts of type specimens than the ubiquitous “Quousque tandem abutere…” of Cicero’s first oration against Catiline. Careful reading of type specimens\, especially those of the nineteenth century\, reveals widespread patriotism\, jingoism\, and cultural chauvinism; historical and literary allusions; references to topical events; wordplay\, sophomoric humor\, and parody; and bald self-promotion. Unfortunately\, they also contain racist\, sexist\, and xenophobic comments. In sum\, type specimens are more than just a collection of pretty faces. They are a window into the attitudes and concerns of the past. This particular event will focus on nineteenth-century American type specimens. \nPlease join Paul Shaw Live at the Archive for refreshments between 5:30 and 6:30pm. Paul’s presentation will begin promptly at 6:30pm\, followed by Q&A. \n* This event will not be streamed live. After it concludes\, all registrants will receive a link to the video recording.

SUMMARY:Going Global with Sharp Earth
DESCRIPTION:With Sharp Earth\, type designer Lucas Sharp sought to answer the question\, “Is it possible to design a typeface for the whole world?” \nWhat began as a series of sketches drawn on a road trip through Thailand would eventually become Sharp Type’s largest typeface family to date. Developed in close collaboration with local type experts from around the world over the course of nearly 7 years\, Sharp Earth includes Latin\, Greek\, Cyrillic\, Thai\, Japanese\, Arabic\, and Devanagari—with more to come. \nIn this in-person Letterform Lecture\, Sharp will share the development\, cultural complexities\, production challenges\, technical intricacies\, and triumphs of a contemporary multi-script design that is still being defined in this pioneering field of type design\, adding to the fruitful conversation that is all too relevant in our increasingly globalized world. \nPlease note that this Letterform Lecture will not be live-streamed; however\, you may select the ticketed option to receive the video of the lecture and Q&A after the event concludes. \nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library\, where events are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:London Strife: the Great Bookbinding Strike of 1786
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, bookbinders worked for longer hours and for less pay than most artisans. In the revolutionary unease of the late eighteenth century\, the London bookbinders decided to strike for a reduction in their working day. This landed the binders in trouble\, with some ending up in jail. The Great Bookbinding Strike of 1786 is an extraordinary story of labor strife\, fine bookbinding\, early trade unionism\, and the long journey towards the forty hour week. \nDominic trained at the London College of Printing (1988-90)\, and spends his time restoring antiquarian books\, creating design bindings for exhibitions and to commission\, teaching and lecturing. \n\nRiley has made about eighty design bindings to date. These are held in places such as the British Library\, the V&A\, the the Grolier Club in New York\, and the San Francisco Public Library. He has won over twenty prizes for his bindings\, including first prize – the Paul Getty Award — in Designer Bookbinders’ International Competition in 2013. He has taught and lectured across the world and spends his summer teaching at the San Francisco Center for the Book. Dominic was elected Fellow of DB in 2009 and currently serves as President of the Society of Bookbinders. \n\nCost: $10 \nWebinars are recorded and available to all registered attendees after the webinar.
