SUMMARY:Using Short Works to Grow Your Author Business
DESCRIPTION:Matty Dalrymple discusses Using Short Works to Grow Your Author Business\, including using non-fiction books as calling cards to other income streams and using short fiction to interest readers in longer works. \nOn the non-fiction front\, Matty uses her own experience with her short non-fiction works (Taking the Short Tack: Creating Income and Connecting with Readers Using Short Fiction and The Indy Author’s Guide to Podcasting for Authors) to illustrate how the opportunities these open—consulting\, speaking engagements\, articles\, contest judging—provide far greater income than the sales of the books themselves. She shares tips on how authors can best position themselves to capitalize on their short non-fiction as a “business card” for their other offerings. \nOn the fiction front\, based on the material from Taking the Short Tack\, she discusses how authors can connect with readers using short fiction\, including using it as a reader magnet\, as audio offerings\, and as promotional material. She discusses how to use short fiction to create income\, focusing on the opportunities offered by indie publishing. And she discusses how short fiction can indirectly support a creative business by enabling authors to market test new characters\, worlds\, or genres\, or to re-start the engine of their (longer) creative work. \nOn both fronts\, Matty discusses how authors can find\, nurture\, and capitalize on these opportunities by building a community of fellow creators in the writing and publishing worlds.

SUMMARY:Googie Modern: Architectural Drawings of Armet Davis Newlove
DESCRIPTION:In Googie Modern: Architectural Drawings of Armet Davis Newlove\, authors Michael Murphy and Alan Hess take readers inside the private archives of the forward-thinking trio dubbed the “fathers of Googie.” Inspiring not just artists and filmmakers but the public at large\, their futuristic coffee shops and restaurants made dining out a space-age experience\, just as man was ready to walk on the moon. Armet Davis Newlove’s architecture captured the optimistic and forward-thinking mood in post-war America and set the bar for what would become Mid-Century Modern style. The firm’s high-concept designs shaped Southern California and then took off across the American landscape\, giving the US innovative\, practical\, and gorgeous monuments of everyday life. Each remarkable rendering demonstrates the passion and precision that went into every Armet Davis Newlove creation. Googie Modern is itself a monument to the excitement and optimism that once lined the streets of mid-century America. \nAn in-person presentation by Michael Murphy\, author\, art director\, and design professional\, and Alan Hess\, architect\, author\, and historian.

SUMMARY:Characters Who Aren't People: When Places Play a Role
DESCRIPTION:Glenda Carroll in Conversation with Vera Chan \nYou’re reading over a draft of your book. You pause\, scratch your head\, and think\, ‘this fictional café is taking over my story.” Then you decide\, that’s not a bad thing. \nFacebook Saturday Live kicks off the new year with “Characters Who Aren’t People: When Places Play a Role” or how to use location or activities as a character in your book. For example\, does your protagonist spend time in the Emergency Room or racing sailboats or is she/he/they elbow deep in baking flour? What if the character lives in Amsterdam 1942\, downtown Chicago in the 1920’s or south of the Border? \nGlenda Carroll\, author of the Trisha Carson mysteries\, will be talking about how she uses non-people characters all the time\, on the first Facebook Saturday Live in 2023. \nCarroll’s mysteries are set in the tree-lined streets of Marin\, the fog-covered Golden Gate Bridge and the ‘play ball’ atmosphere of Oracle Park\, home of the San Francisco Giants. She thinks her settings often become as important as the real characters. \nCarroll will be interviewed by Vera Chan\, NorCal MWA Board Member.

SUMMARY:Virtual Coffee Chat: Editors with Disabilities/Chronic Illnesses
DESCRIPTION:This coffee chat centers people who work as editors and are living with disability and/or chronic illness. It is open to everyone. The idea was partly inspired by an active peer group currently hosted by the Society of Authors (https://www.societyofauthors.org/Groups/Authors-Disabilities-Illnesses-Network). \nGroup agreements that will be open for discussion at the start of the chat:\n* Disclosure (of illness/disability/etc.) is welcome. Disclosure is not required.\n* There are no requirements. We participate (or not) in the ways that work for us.\n* We take care of ourselves. Stretch\, eat\, drink\, take a break\, etc.\n* We can’t be articulate all the time. We give each other the benefit of the doubt and ask questions.\n* We keep confidentiality: Learning goes\, stories stay. \nThe online chat this Thursday will have an open agenda\, loosely focused on work-life: How do we define\, handle\, and sustain our work as editors. What kinds of projects are a good fit? How do we obtain enough but not too much work (if that is even possible in editing!)? What have we learned and what can we learn from each other? \nThe next chat will be held on Monday afternoon February 13. \nThis event is free to attend and open to all editors.

SUMMARY:Six Month Screenwriting Intensive
DESCRIPTION:with James Napoli \nThe art and craft of writing for the screen is a skill that all authors would do well to have in their creative arsenals. On one level\, prose fiction\, memoir\, non-fiction\, all these forms have been\, and will continue to be\, sought out by the film industry as foundations for works in the visual storytelling realm. So\, writers who bring with them a full understanding of the techniques—and very specific considerations—that go into bringing screen stories to life are adding a valuable component to their career qualifications. \nPerhaps even more importantly\, being able to offer screenplays among one’s catalogue of written works could add a new and potentially profitable set of skills to an author’s toolkit. Getting a handle on how those in movies and TV tell their stories will enrich and inspire the creative process in unexpected and energizing ways. Putting that knowledge into practice lets a writer generate a tangible art form that augments and amplifies their body of work. \nThis course is designed to guide you through the foundational elements of screenwriting\, including structural\, stylistic\, and formatting archetypes that inform script creation\, as you proceed toward a rough first draft screenplay or television pilot as the culmination of our coursework. \nWe will delve into modern standards of story construction along with the ancient roots of the traditional three-act structure. These theory elements will always be combined with hands-on writing exercises (some assigned as homework\, others taking shape “improv” style within class time)\, reading and analyzing several produced scripts\, and peer critiquing of your fellow authors’ projects as they take shape during our journey. In addition to structure\, we will go deeply into character and dialogue\, the importance of research\, and the distinct demands of forging evocative\, economical descriptive passages in screenplays.

SUMMARY:The Koran in English – From Yusuf Ali to Sandow Birk
DESCRIPTION:For millions of Muslims\, the Qur’an is sacred only in the original Arabic. Revealed to an Arab merchant Muhammad in 7th century Arabia\, it calls itself “an Arabic Qur’an”. At once lyrical and adamantine\, it resists translation into any other language. Yet scholars have tried to cross the barrier\, rendering it into numerous classical and modern languages\, including English. \nThe most adventuresome 20th century translator\, Yusuf ‘Ali\, a British civil servant in India\, even strove to make English itself an Islamic language\, while a recent American voyager—at once surfer and artist—Sandow Birk created an American Qur’an in the 21st century\, post 9/11. \nIn this talk\, Bruce Bennett Lawrence will connect to many translators but he especially prizes the link between Yusuf Ali and Sandow Birk. While Yusuf Ali wants to make English an Islamic language\, Sandow Birk hopes to make the Koran an American text/resource\, a compass for post-9/11 Americans. \nA virtual presentation by Bruce Bennett Lawrence\, author\, Marcus Family Humanities Professor of Religion Emeritus\, Duke University\, and adjunct professor at the Alliance of Civilizations Institute\, Ibn Haldun University\, Istanbul.

SUMMARY:Experiments in Creativity
DESCRIPTION:with Coleman Stevenson \nIf you allow them to\, ideas for art and writing can come from absolutely anywhere. This creative generation class will put that theory to the test\, through a series of experiments in creative problem-solving\, spontaneous and chance-based play\, and other exploratory prompts that challenge you to work outside your normal modes and investigate how the creative brain works. \nPrior to the start of this series of classes\, each participant will receive a unique packet of random materials in the mail. In-class exercises and weekly assignments will ask you to work with these materials in various ways\, including an opportunity to create collaboratively at a distance. You’ll also keep a weekly journal detailing your personal process and ideas about creativity. \nAs support for this process\, we will read and discuss essays by artists and writers about the creative process. Creators working in any medium are welcome\, though you will be asked at times to cross genres. Also welcome is anyone who feels that they are “not a creative person.” This class will help you find the creative spark within. Materials fee includes all materials for class projects. \nPlease Note: We encourage you to register by January 10\, so that materials can be sent to arrive before the class begins. \nAccess Program\nWe want our writing classes and Delves to be accessible to everyone\, regardless of income and background. We understand that our tuition structure can present obstacles for some people. Our Access Program offers writing class and Delve tuitions at a reduced rate. The access program for writing classes covers 60% of the class tuition. Most writing classes have at least one access spot available.

SUMMARY:Writing the Autofiction Novella: 12-week intensive
DESCRIPTION:with Frances Badalamenti \nAutofiction is a unique genre (or non-genre) that combines the autobiographical with the fictional. In this course\, we will take a close look at the craft of autofiction. We will read novel excerpts\, short stories and novellas. We will also look at craft essays on the form. The goal over the twelve weeks is to work on a draft of a novella (if not a full draft\, then you will get a solid head start)\, which can be anywhere from 20K-40K words. \nThis course will be generative. You will be expected to write and submit a substantial amount of prose per week (1500-2500 words). We will read about 25 pages  of excerpts and craft essays each week and discuss them as a group. And there will be an ongoing discussion around goal setting and accountability with your fellow writers. This class is geared towards all levels of writers. Students will be expected to keep up with the weekly assignments (both reading and writing) and have a solid commitment to the process. \nExamples of (autofiction) writers that we will look at: Edouard Louis\, Karl Ove Knausgaard\, Ayah Akhtar\, Ben Lerner\, Zinzi Clemmons\, Garth Greenwell\, Sheila Heti\, Tao Lin\, Ocean Vuong\, Brandon Taylor and others.\n\nAccess Program\nWe want our classes to be accessible to everyone\, regardless of income and background. We understand that our tuition structure can present obstacles for some people. Our Access Program offers class registrations at a reduced rate. The access program for writing classes covers 60% of the class tuition. Most writing classes have at least one access spot available.

SUMMARY:Grief\, Lyrically
DESCRIPTION:with Wendy Noonan \nWriters often use musical techniques to access states of consciousness we associate with grief. Lyrical writing prioritizes music\, rhythm\, and emotion over the narrative arc. The goal of this course is to find entry into writing through reading\, conversation\,and various prompts and exercises to catalyze memory and thinking. We will consider how writers crafting stories and poetry about grief use lyricism\, discursiveness\, fragmentation\, and silence to embody writing content through form. Participants should be prepared to write a lot! Prompts and exercises will allow students to access various parts of memory. In a short period of time\, we will get to know one another and provide a sounding board for our stories in a safe space. \nAccess Program\nWe want our classes to be accessible to everyone\, regardless of income and background. We understand that our tuition structure can present obstacles for some people. Our Access Program offers class registrations at a reduced rate. The access program for writing classes covers 60% of the class tuition. Most writing classes have at least one access spot available.

SUMMARY:Becoming Your Own Publisher: Advice\, Tips and Pitfalls/Self-Editing Your Work
DESCRIPTION:We are slowly but surely beginning to incorporate live events into our schedule. January is traditionally Self-Pub month. We have asked Janet Dawson\, Peggy Lucke\, and Michael Nava to join MWA NorCal for a panel discussion on setting up your own publishing house. We will ask them to weigh in on the pros and cons (if any) of being their own jack of all trades. As a natural follow-up to this discussion\, Laurie R. King and Zoe Quinton are going to discuss self-editing your material. If you’re going to self-publish\, learning the finer points of self-editing is a must.
