SUMMARY:Pianel Binding Workshop
DESCRIPTION:by Coleen Curry \n  \nThe Pianel binding is a modern twist on binding structures that use metal rods at the joint\, more commonly known as piano hinges. The ‘Pianel’ structure designed by Ben Elbel uses the piano hinge as a main structural and visual feature with the piano hinge tucked away in a neat\, nifty construction\, leaving only two clean vertical lines on the outside separating the spine and boards. Shiny dots of polished brass rods complete the head and tail. \nThe process behind the result is simple but requires precision and planning. The book is a flat back with two paper covers\, however the structure can be made with leather or cloth. Careful attention to detail and precision is essential.

SUMMARY:Remember Me: American Carved Stone Books from the Ian Berke Collection
DESCRIPTION:Remember Me: American Carved Stone Books from the Ian Berke Collection\, curated by Mindell Dubansky\,  is a fascinating exploration of the realm where book-like objects and folk art intersect. San Francisco collector Ian Berke began collecting these intriguing artifacts during a chance encounter at an antique show in New England in 2007. Fascinated by a small\, white marble book bearing the inscription “Remembr the Maine\,” Berke’s interest was piqued\, leading him down a path of discovery that ultimately resulted in amassing a collection of over 500 of these unique pieces over seventeen years.\nThe exhibition at San Francisco Center for the Book (SFCB) invites viewers to explore a selection of intricately carved books from Berke’s collection. These objects are more than mere curiosities; they are tangible expressions of emotion\, whether friendship\, love\, devotion\, or commemoration of significant events. From the delicate intricacies of the carvings to heartfelt inscriptions etched upon their surfaces\, the works offer a window into a bygone era\, where craftsmanship and sentimentality converged in remarkable ways.\nRemember Me: American Carved Stone Books from the Ian Berke Collection illuminates the cultural and historical contexts in which these objects were created\, encouraging gallery visitors to reflect on the enduring power of material objects to convey and preserve the intangible aspects of human experience.

SUMMARY:How They Did It: High-Stakes Memoir
DESCRIPTION:In the latest “How They Did It” conversation co-presented by Litquake and LitCamp\, we’ll hear from four intrepid authors of recent memoirs\, all of whom took the heroic step of committing their fascinating stories to the page. Eddie Ahn (Advocate)\, Sylvia Brownrigg (The Whole Staggering Mystery)\, Margaret Juhae Lee (Starry Field)\, and Carvell Wallace (Another Word for Love) bravely unfurl stories of family\, memory\, ambition\, healing\, and love. Our moderator is Rachel Howard\, author of the memoir The Lost Night. What did they risk on the page? What\, if anything\, do they regret? And how can they stir other would-be memoirists to take up the mantel of bravery and write their stories\, no matter the stakes?\nWe’ll gather at the Page Street Co-Working space in San Francisco\, where in addition to the conversation\, we’ll enjoy time for casual networking. We’ll be pouring Prosecco\, wine\, and fancy nonalcoholic drinks. Proceeds from ticket sales will support both LitCamp and Litquake.

SUMMARY:California\, a Slave State
DESCRIPTION:California owes its origins and sunny prosperity to slavery. Spanish invaders captured Indigenous people to build the chain of Catholic missions. Russian otter hunters shipped Alaska Natives—the first slaves transported into California—and launched a Pacific slave triangle to China. Plantation slaves were marched across the plains for the Gold Rush. San Quentin Prison incubated California’s carceral state. Kidnapped Chinese girls were sold in caged brothels in early San Francisco. Indian boarding schools supplied new farms and hotels with unfree child workers. \nBy looking west to California\, Jean Pfaelzer upends our understanding of slavery as a North-South struggle and reveals how the enslaved in California fought\, fled\, and resisted human bondage. In unyielding research and vivid interviews\, Pfaelzer exposes how California gorged on slavery\, an appetite that persists today in a global trade in human beings lured by promises of jobs but who instead are imprisoned in sweatshops and remote marijuana grows\, or sold as nannies and sex workers. \nA virtual presentation by Jean Pfaelzer\, author and professor emerita of English and American Studies\, University of Delaware

SUMMARY:Hybrid Salon 48: Design Action Collective: 20 Years of Political Graphics
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an in-depth exploration of Design Action Collective’s archives with designer and educator Sabiha Basrai. \n  \nDesign Action Collective was founded in the early 2000s by two members of Inkworks Press. For over 20 years\, the shop has been producing graphics to serve social justice campaigns and grassroots organizations. \nThis salon will feature the perspectives and insights of Sabiha Basrai\, a member of Design Action Collective\, as she delves into a curated selection of posters representing decades of movement history and demonstrates what is possible when graphic designers build long term trust and collaborative spaces centering people most impacted by systemic oppression. \nFrom the anti-war posters produced during the Bush administration\, to the original Black Lives Matter logo\, to immigrant rights work under the Trump administration – the Design Action Collective poster archive provides a story of resistance and relentless activism. \nThis event is in conjunction with Basrai’s research fellowship at the Archive which includes a pop-up exhibition in our reading room open between April 11 and May 5. \n  \nThis event is in-person and over zoom.
