SUMMARY:Multilingual Typesetting on the Web
DESCRIPTION:with Marie Otsuka\nThis workshop will cover a variety of technical techniques for typesetting multiple scripts on websites\, with a focus on CJK writing systems. \nTypesetting different languages together can be a challenge for online projects. This 2-day intensive will review HTML and CSS techniques on formatting typography for multiple scripts\, especially with East Asian languages. We will begin with the basics of using web fonts\, including an understanding of glyph subsets and fallbacks\, and move to advanced techniques in refining typography for language-specific design conventions such as vertical typesetting. Participants will need no prior knowledge of these languages for this workshop but should be prepared to dive into code. Because the presenter’s language expertise is in English and Japanese\, some examples will be based on these two scripts but technical concepts may be applied to other languages. Participants should bring their own web project with their preferred languages to apply learnings from the workshop.

SUMMARY:Salon Series 49: A Seat at the Table: Queer*+ Intersections
DESCRIPTION:with Eve Scarborough\, Jada Simone Haynes\, Mikhail of Hearts\nTo celebrate Pride month\, the Archive features a selection of work by Queer*+ designers\, curated by members of the Collections Team. \nTo celebrate Pride month and the ongoing struggles for equity\, this salon will showcase insights and perspectives of Eve Scarborough\, Jada Simone Haynes\, and Mikhail of Hearts as stewards of the Letterform Archive’s Permanent Collection through the acts of physical care\, documentation\, and audience activation. \nThey will explore the Archive’s Queer*+ intersections from a contemporary lens by considering their lived queer experiences\, personal art practices\, and how intersectional Queer*+ identities and experiences have historically been represented or overlooked in visual culture. They seek to establish A Seat at the Table\, inviting dialogue and reflection around the following questions: \n\nWhere do we see ourselves?\nHow do we confront the colonial origins of archives in the work that we do?\nHow can we honor and invite Queer*+ artists\, designers\, educators\, and practitioners to pull up a chair and share their stories\, across our past\, present\, and future?\n\nThe spread will include objects that engage both explicitly and implicitly with queerness\, through an intersectional\, expansive\, and cross-disciplinary lens. The selection will also include objects that resonate personally\, exploring queerness through structure\, content\, and language. A Seat at the Table is a call to action to challenge dominant narratives present in institutions and strive for inclusive storytelling in art and design.

SUMMARY:A Certain Cotta: Book-Cover Design from Buenos Aires
DESCRIPTION:with Francisco Roca\nLearn about the young graphic artist who designed book covers that would become a sensation in ’60s era Argentina\, Latin America\, and Spain. \nIn 1962\, young graphic artist Juan Ángel Cotta died in a car crash. His ongoing work project at the time\, 103 covers for Los Libros del Mirasol —one of South America’s most unique and appealingly-illustrated book collections— went into oblivion until designers Francisco Roca and Leandro Castelao envisaged assembling his piecemeal job into a single volume. During this talk\, you will have the chance to delve into the research that turned a heartfelt casual endeavour into a full editorial journey\, culminating in the first-ever book to compile Cotta’s visual legacy. \nIn the words of design critic Steven Heller: \nCotta’s work\, especially a collection of hardback books he illustrated in 1960 under the series title The Sunflower Books is one of the missing links between South American publishing and the European modernist traditions. \nPlease join us Live at the Archive for refreshments between 5:30 and 6:30. Francisco’s presentation will begin promptly at 6:30 with a Q&A following that.

SUMMARY:Two Memoirs: Zack Rogow and Claudia Marseille
DESCRIPTION:Join painter Claudia Marseille and poet Zack Rogow in conversation on their new memoirs\, But You Look So Normal and Hugging My Father’s Ghost. In their writings\, Marseille and Rogow navigate complex topics of familial trauma\, loss\, coming-of-age\, and resilience with tenderness\, honesty\, and humor. The discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A and book signing. \nAbout the Books \nBut You Look So Normal \nClaudia Marseille was nearly four years old and had hardly uttered a word. Her German parents\, a disturbed psychoanalyst father\, and Jewish mother\, survivor of the Holocaust\, immigrated to America after WWII and were adjusting to new lives and being new parents. Finally they had her tested and discovered her severe hearing loss. \nOften isolated and lonely\, Claudia didn’t entirely fit into the hearing world\, nor into the Deaf culture. In this inspiring and moving memoir\, Claudia Marseille weaves family history into a compelling account of growing up and living with an invisible disability—of emerging from silence to finding her voice\, and from feeling isolated and ashamed to connected and empowered. \nHolding My Father’s Ghost \nIn Holding My Father’s Ghost\, Zack Rogow tries to solve the mystery of the father he never knew. Lee Rogow was a widely published fiction writer\, drama critic for the Hollywood Reporter\, glamorous man-about-town in Manhattan of the 1950s\, captain of a submarine-chaser in World War II—and he died tragically in a plane crash when his son Zack was only three years old. \nIn Hugging My Father’s Ghost\, Zack delves into his father’s unpublished work and unearths treasures. The memoir intersperses Zack’s father’s writings\, Zack’s reflections on his parents and the Greatest Generation\, and imaginary conversations between his father and himself. The book blends laugh-out-loud humor with sharp pathos\, while dealing with the pressures on immigrant families and how those impacted the fates of his parents.

SUMMARY:SOROCHE Live at The Brava
DESCRIPTION:Two Lines Press and Cuentero Productions present Soroche\, a haunting multimedia performance. Adapted from the short story by award-winning Ecuadorian writer Mónica Ojeda published in Through the Night Like a Snake: Latin American Horror Stories by Two Lines Press\, Soroche depicts the effects of a leaked sex tape\, filtered through the dizzying lens of altitude sickness. The cinematic sound design\, created by Cuentero Productions to accompany the performance\, immerses the audience in the suffocating\, malignant air of the mountains while giving voice to Mónica Ojeda’s harrowing observations of abject humiliation and self-loathing. The performance will be followed by a conversation between translators Sarah Booker and Noelle de la Paz and Sarah Coolidge\, editor of Through the Night Like a Snake.

SUMMARY:Monthly Bookbinding Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Japanese Stab Binding: \nThis beginner-friendly stab binding technique is a perfect project to start your bookbinding journey. It is generally called a Japanese stab binding but was used throughout Asia. It’s a great option for binding pre-cut sheets of paper\, no folding or gluing required. The simplicity of preparation and materials makes it the perfect “starter” project but is practiced by bookbinders of all levels. \nStab bindings are very popular in Japan dating back to the Edo period. Characteristics of this binding are an exposed spine with single sheets of paper sewn through the cover using several recognized sewing patterns; the patterns are the focal point of the binding. Since the spine is sewn through the cover the resulting book does not lay flat. \n  \nNo experience necessary\, but class-size is limited to 12 people per workshop. Reserve your spot today!

SUMMARY:WILD Event: Jam: Focus Your Vision
DESCRIPTION:We are redirecting the attention of our Women in Leadership & Design (WILD) community through a vision boarding party during SF Design Week. Vision boarding is an inspiring creative tool for focusing one’s attention on a better\, more intentional future — a major part of both SFDW’s and WILD’s reasons for being. When we give our hopes\, dreams\, and wishes form — whether we put them in words by writing them down\, or make them tangible through visual design — they are more likely to become a reality. So we will gather\, with magazines and collage materials\, to bring our unique visions for creating a better world and daily life\, together. \nWe will provide thematic creative prompts ahead of the session\, such as ‘How do you want to show up bold?’ to guide all participants in selecting powerful images to work with\, that uplift and elevate our mission and purpose. Participants are encouraged to bring their own inspirational materials\, adding a personal touch to their vision boards and enhancing the collective creativity of our WILD community. We are excited to ignite change through art and design. As this year’s ‘Attention’ theme suggests\, we seek to bring together a global and intersectional community of designers\, strategists\, artists\, and activists to focus on connections yet to be made.

SUMMARY:Ellen Browning Scripps: New Money and American Philanthropy\, 1836-1932
DESCRIPTION:Molly McClain tells the remarkable story of Ellen Browning Scripps (1836–1932)\, an American newspaperwoman\, feminist\, suffragist\, abolitionist\, and social reformer. She used her fortune to support women’s education\, the labor movement\, and public access to science\, the arts\, and education. \nBorn in London\, Scripps grew up in rural poverty on the Illinois prairie. She went from rags to riches\, living out that cherished American story in which people pull themselves up by their bootstraps with audacity\, hard work\, and luck. She and her brother\, E. W. Scripps\, built America’s largest chain of newspapers\, linking midwestern industrial cities with booming towns in the West. Less well known today than the papers started by Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst\, Scripps newspapers transformed their owners into millionaires almost overnight. \nBy the 1920s Scripps was worth an estimated $30 million\, most of which she gave away. She established the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla\, California\, and appeared on the cover of Time magazine after founding Scripps College in Claremont\, California. She also provided major financial support to organizations worldwide that promised to advance democratic principles and public education. \nIn Ellen Browning Scripps\, McClain brings to life an extraordinary woman who played a vital role in the history of women\, California\, and the American West. \nA virtual presentation by Molly McClain\, author and professor of History\, University of San Diego

SUMMARY:Book Anatomy: Body Politics and the Materiality of Indigenous Book History
DESCRIPTION:From a book’s “spine” to its “appendix\,” bibliographers use a language of the body that reveals our intimate connection with books. Yet books do more than describe bodies—they embody a frontline of colonization in which Indigenous authors battle the public perception and reception of Indigenous peoples. Starting with John Rollin Ridge’s The Life and Adventures of Joaquín Murieta (1854) as the first novel to be published in the newly formed state of California and the first novel published by a Native author\, Amy Gore calls attention to the negotiations between books and bodies embedded within Indigenous literary history. Bringing Indigenous book history more firmly into conversations with mainstream narratives about the history of the book\, her research claims books themselves as a source of embodied power for early Native American authors. \nA virtual presentation by Amy Gore\, author and assistant professor of English\, North Dakota State University
