Our moderator is Rachel Howard\, author of the memoir The Lost Night. What did they risk on the page? What\, if anything\, do they regret? And how can they stir other would-be memoirists to take up the mantel of bravery and write their stories\, no matter the stakes?\nWe’ll gather at the Page Street Co-Working space in San Francisco\, where in addition to the conversation\, we’ll enjoy time for casual networking. Indian boarding schools supplied new farms and hotels with unfree child workers. \nBy looking west to California\, Jean Pfaelzer upends our understanding of slavery as a North-South struggle and reveals how the enslaved in California fought\, fled\, and resisted human bondage. Not long after the rich and creative were driven away by a greedy throng of industrialists and railroad magnates and the politics they wrought\, Terminal Island became home to another thriving world\, this time a small community of Japanese families\, people linked by their lineage and their amazing ability to capture the biggest fish the Pacific had to offer. They were the fishermen of Terminal Island. And their wives. And their children. These people were at the heart of one of Southern California’s most important businesses: the fisheries. \nAnd then came a war. A world war that devastated the hopes\, dreams\, homes\, and families of the Japanese who lived on Terminal Island. The Japanese and Japanese American residents of the island were forced from their homes and sent to internment camps around the country. No previous Procreate or lettering experience is required. \nIn this four day workshop (over two consecutive weekends)\, participants will learn how to bring words to life through the art of lettering. Although we’ll use the iPad and Apple Pencil as our main set of tools\, the same lessons and principles from this course can be applied to analog mediums. We’ll walk through the foundational skills that’ll enable you to create unique lettering pieces that can be applied to both personal and professional projects. \nWe will begin by laying a foundation for lettering approaches and understanding type anatomy while learning the technical side of working in Procreate. The second half of the workshop will build on that foundation through sketching and iterating on dynamic compositions and using a variety of techniques to create finished\, share-worthy lettering pieces. DESCRIPTION:The Los Angeles shoreline is one of the most iconic natural landscapes in the United States\, if not the world. Yet\, in the early twentieth century Angelenos routinely lamented the city’s crowded\, polluted\, and eroded sands\, many of which were private and inaccessible to the public. \nBetween the 1920s and the 1960s\, LA’s engineers\, city officials\, urban planners\, and business elite worked together to transform the relatively untouched beaches into modern playgrounds for the white middle class. \nAs they opened up vast public spaces for many Angelenos to express themselves\, show off their bodies\, and forge alternative communities\, they made clear that certain groups of beachgoers\, including African Americans\, gay men and women\, and bodybuilders\, were no longer welcome. \nSand Rush not only uncovers how the Los Angeles coastline was constructed but also how this major planning and engineering project affected the lives of ordinary city-dwellers and attracted many Americans to move to Southern California. \nA virtual presentation by Elsa Devienne\, author and assistant professor in US History\, Northumbria University\, Newcastle upon Tyne\, England

The idea was partly inspired by an active peer group currently hosted by the Society of Authors (https://www.societyofauthors.org/Groups/Authors-Disabilities-Illnesses-Network). \nGroup agreements that will be open for discussion at the start of the chat:\n* Disclosure (of illness/disability/etc.) is welcome. Disclosure is not required.\n* There are no requirements. We participate (or not) in the ways that work for us.\n* We take care of ourselves. Stretch\, eat\, drink\, take a break\, etc.\n* We can’t be articulate all the time. We give each other the benefit of the doubt and ask questions.\n* We keep confidentiality: Learning goes\, stories stay. \nThe online chat this Thursday will have an open agenda\, loosely focused on work-life: How do we define\, handle\, and sustain our work as editors. What kinds of projects are a good fit? How do we obtain enough but not too much work (if that is even possible in editing!)? What have we learned and what can we learn from each other? \nThis event is free to attend and open to all editors.
