SUMMARY:SFCB | On Adaptations and Deceptions at First Sight: a conversation with artists Viviana Martínez Carlos and Alex Nichols
DESCRIPTION:Hosted/Organized by: San Francisco Center for the Book \nDATE: Friday\, January 21\, 2022 \nTIME: doors at 6 pm; presentation begins promptly at 6:30. \nRegistration for this event is mandatory; attendees will be required to show proof of vaccination prior to the event and wear a mask while onsite/indoors at SFCB. \nClick here to register.\n\nOn Adaptations and Deceptions at First Sight from the Mexican artist Viviana Martínez Carlos is a collaborative artist book which narrates the biological adaptation of the palm tree on the urban landscape of California\, published by Entropico Ediciones. \nThe palm tree image is one of the most prominent symbols in the collective memory of the State of California. Utilizing imagery from the public domain dated between the years 1880 and 1920 as well as contemporary photographs by Martínez Carlos\, On Adaptations and Deceptions at First Sight presents the palm tree as an inhabitant transplanted to this time and place. Brief descriptions of biological adaptations of the palm tree and reflections on the construction of the landscape are mixed in the texts. \nMartínez Carlos will be in conversation with San Francisco based conceptual artist Alex Nichols\, and focus on studio and research practices\, the nature of collaboration\, and how personal narrative can influence one’s body of work. \nhttps://sfcb.org/adaptations

Her distinctly gauzy art style is what she likes to call “etherealism”\, a blend of ethereal realism. Whether she is creating delicate visions on canvas\, or crushing massive walls with a spray can\, she often draws on the human condition to create colorful mash-ups of the abstract and figurative. Hueman’s unique freestyle process involves creating tightly refined compositions from a spontaneous beginning of paint splashes\, drips\, and sprays\, and her layered works can be seen on public streets and in galleries worldwide. \nShe balances her time between gallery exhibitions and public mural work while also collaborating with some of the world’s top brands that include Adobe\, Lyft\, Nike\, Forever 21\, Google\, L’Oreal\, Sony Music\, Golden State Warriors and many more. Her work has found homes in the collections of Stephen Curry\, Ava Duvernay\, Usher\, P!nk\, and Swizz Beats. \nHealth is our top priority. With our updated COVID-response\, we ensure to keep our space sanitized and safe. Read Ciel Covid-19 guidelines. \nArt + Tech: A “Homebody” Immersive Experience with SF Design Week

SUMMARY:ABM and BCC | A Shimmer of Joy: One Hundred Children’s Picture Books in America
DESCRIPTION:Hosted/Organized by: American Bookbinders Museum and Book Club of California \nPicture books are a jewel in the crown of children’s literature. They are composed of words\, illustrations\, and the dramatically paced rhythm of pages turning in the reader’s hand. When these elements come together with creative mastery\, a surge of mind or heart can occur\, as with any form of fine art. At its most inspirational\, a picture book can provide a transporting reading experience—punctuated by shimmering moments of joy—for the children and adults who journey inside its covers. \nA Shimmer of Joy is an exciting and colorful presentation of children’s picture books published in – or imported to – America from 1900 to 2015. A Shimmer of Joy: One Hundred Children’s Picture Books in America by Chris Loker\, is the Book Club of California’s 239th publication. It was published in two editions: a Deluxe Edition of 50 copies and a Standard Edition of 200 copies. Both are on display in the current exhibit. \nChris Loker is the author of children’s books and books about children’s literature. She graduated from Stanford University and attended the Stanford Graduate School of Business. She is a former member of the board of the Book Club of California\, and currently serves on the boards of the Grolier Club\, The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art\, Rare Book School at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville\, and Bring Me a Book. \nNote: Proof of vaccination and photo ID may be required for admission\, as well as a mask.

SUMMARY:BAiPA | Book Cover Design with David Kudler
DESCRIPTION:Hosted/Organized by: Bay Area Independent Publishers Association BAIPA monthly meetings are now exclusively on Zoom\, at least until we get through this COVID-19 crisis. The Zoom links will be provided to you via email on the Friday evening before 9 PM. So you MUST register in advance in order to participate. Scroll down to the bottom of this page for the list of available tickets. The general meeting begins at 9 am\, speaker presentation is at 11 am\, after Q&A\, networking time\, introductions & announcements. Scroll down for details and to register. No afternoon workshop for this meeting. (Click here for the schedule for the day) Current BAIPA members must log in first to get a free ticket to the morning session. Then come back to this page. There is a Member login link in the upper right corner of the site. \nMORNING PRESENTATION:You CAN Tell a Book by Its Cover:How to make sure your book cover is doing its job — regardless of medium or genrewith David Kudler: author\, publisher\, and expert provider of design and editorial services to independent publishers \nYou may not be able to judge a book by its cover — but that doesn’t mean that people don’t every day. Your cover has a very important job to do\, so are you sure it’s up to the job? Longtime BAIPA member (and former BAIPA board member) David Kudler will examine the do’s and don’ts of making sure your cover IS doing its job\, He will talk about: \n1. The three promises a book cover makes2. ebook vs. print vs. audiobook covers3. Online vs. in-hand needs \nAlso\, ALL BAIPA members are invited to participate in our Annual Book Cover Design Contest! Of necessity\, we will have to do this a little differently. Here are the rules and process: 1. The contest is open to any book authored by a current BAIPA member\, whether you worked with a designer on the cover or you designed it yourself. Any year of publication is fine. (Even next year\, as long as the cover is finished.) However\, we can only accept one entry per author. 2. Send a copy of the front cover to webmaster@baipa.org. At least 1000 pixels wide. The deadline is November 20. 3. We will put the covers together into one or more pdfs that we will display at the meeting\, ideally in broad categories (Fiction\, Non-Fiction\, and Children’s Books).  Everyone who is present will get three votes (one for each category). (We’ll use a Zoom poll at the end of the morning session.) There is no fee and the results will be announced at the completion of the Zoom poll\, which will take place at 12:15 PM. The winners in each category will get a free afternoon workshop in 2022. The prize must be used no later than the November 2022 meeting. Book Cover Design with David Kudler — 12/04/21

SUMMARY:Letterform Archive | Salon Series 29: Bauhaus Typefaces with Stephen Coles
DESCRIPTION:Hosted/Organized by: Letterform Archive Online Lecture at Letterform ArchiveThu\, Dec 2\, 202112:00pm–1:30pm PT \nBauhaus typography\, publication design\, and alphabet experiments are often associated with minimalist letters reduced to pure geometry\, but that’s only part of the story. This tour through Letterform Archive’s extensive collection of typeface specimens will explore the utilitarian workhorses used in the school’s early publications to the many geometric designs that sprung up long after the school closed. This event coincides with Bauhaus Typography at 100\, the inaugural exhibition of Letterform Archive’s first-ever gallery. https://letterformarchive.org/events/view/salon-series-29-bauhaus-typefaces

SUMMARY:Letterform Archive | Why Start a National Design Archive with Gabriel Amijai Benderski Perez
DESCRIPTION:Hosted/Organized by: Letterform Archive and the SF Public Library Co-presented by Book Arts & Special Collections\, San Francisco Public LibraryOnline Lecture at Letterform ArchiveTue\, Nov 30\, 202112:00pm–1:30pm PDT \nThere have been few attempts to narrate or document Uruguayan design tradition; because of this\, the country appears to lack a design history. A commitment to my profession\, my discipline\, and my nation led me to want to fill those gaps\, so we founded an archive of Uruguayan graphic design on July 10\, 2018. The project began thanks to the few references I had about local graphic arts\, and the desire to learn how local events of the past were communicated. In this lecture I’ll share the most curious projects developed in the territory. It is an invitation to discover the visual heritage of a country that has thus far received little attention. https://letterformarchive.org/events/view/why-start-a-national-design-archive
