SUMMARY:Editing With Disability/Chronic Illness
DESCRIPTION:This coffee chat centers people who work as editors and are living with disability and/or chronic illness. It is open to everyone. The idea was partly inspired by an active peer group currently hosted by the Society of Authors (https://www.societyofauthors.org/Groups/Authors-Disabilities-Illnesses-Network). \nGroup agreements that will be open for discussion at the start of the chat:\n* Disclosure (of illness/disability/etc.) is welcome. Disclosure is not required.\n* There are no requirements. We participate (or not) in the ways that work for us.\n* We take care of ourselves. Stretch\, eat\, drink\, take a break\, etc.\n* We can’t be articulate all the time. We give each other the benefit of the doubt and ask questions.\n* We keep confidentiality: Learning goes\, stories stay. \nThe online chat this Thursday will have an open agenda\, loosely focused on work-life: How do we define\, handle\, and sustain our work as editors. What kinds of projects are a good fit? How do we obtain enough but not too much work (if that is even possible in editing!)? What have we learned and what can we learn from each other? \nThe next chat will be held on Monday afternoon April 10 (RSVP at the Event Calendar). \nThis event is free to attend and open to all editors.

SUMMARY:Epicenter: MariNaomi with Grace Loh Prasad
DESCRIPTION:Join Litquake’s Epicenter as we help launch MariNaomi’s new graphic memoir\, I Thought You Loved Me\, a multimedia exploration of the expectations of friendship\, the unreliability of memory\, and the struggle to let go. \n  \nI Thought You Loved Me sifts through a meditative ghost story of sorts\, taking the form of a scrapbook-esque investigation into why a close friendship from the cartoonist’s youth abruptly ended. Mari and Jodie meet in high school in the 80’s. Both are bisexual outsiders\, and each troubled in their own way. A 14-year friendship follows. Boyfriends come and go. When Jodie ghosts Mari in 2001\, Mari is haunted. Years later\, they search social media and their own journals for clues. Though some questions are answered\, Mari is equally mystified by their own youthful insecurities and relationships. All this is told through a captivating collage of cartoons\, photos\, and text\, resulting in an all too human portrait of a relationship. \n\nFREE\, $10-15 suggested donation (pre-registration required)

SUMMARY:Preserving Los Angeles: How Historic Places Can Transform America’s Cities
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles has developed one of the most successful historic preservation programs in the nation\, culminating with the completion of the nation’s most ambitious citywide survey of historic resources. Across the city\, historic preservation is now transforming Los Angeles\, while also pointing the way for other cities to use preservation to revitalize their neighborhoods and build community. Preserving Los Angeles: How Historic Places Can Transform America’s Cities\, written by Ken Bernstein\, who oversees Los Angeles’s Office of Historic Resources\, tells this under-appreciated L.A. story: how historic preservation has revived neighborhoods\, created a Downtown renaissance\, and guided the future of the city. With more than 300 full-color images\, Preserving Los Angeles is an authoritative chronicle of urban transformation\, a guide for citizens and urban practitioners alike who hope to preserve the unique culture of their own cities. \nAn in-person presentation by Ken Bernstein\, author and Principal City Planner and Manager\, Office of Historic Resources\, Los Angeles\, California

SUMMARY:Doctors and Distillers: The Remarkable Medicinal History of Beer\, Wine\, Spirits and Cocktails
DESCRIPTION:In 1848 when Samuel Brannan shouted “Gold! Gold! Gold from the American River!” the precious metal he was waving around was stored in a quinine bottle. Malaria\, scurvy\, and plague all impacted the young city of San Francisco- and many of the recommended treatments for each (cinchona bark\, citrus\, gin) came in beverage form. The City’s most fashionable bar\, located on the site of the Transamerica Building\, served a drink made with Peruvian brandy\, perhaps laced with a bit of cocaine\, which was described by Rudyard Kipling as “compounded of the shavings of cherub’s wings\, the glory of a tropical dawn\, the red clouds of sunset and the fragments of lost epics by dead masters.” \nIn this talk by author Camper English\, we’ll start locally and think globally about diseases and conditions treated by alcohol-based medicine. Alcohol and Medicine have an inextricably intertwined history\, with innovations in each altering the path of the other. The story stretches back to ancient times\, when beer and wine were used to provide nutrition and hydration\, and were employed as solvents for healing botanicals. Over time\, alchemists distilled elixirs designed to cure all diseases\, monastic apothecaries developed mystical botanical liqueurs\, traveling physicians concocted dubious intoxicating nostrums\, and the drinks we’re familiar with today began to take form. \nIn turn\, scientists studied fermentation and formed the germ theory of disease\, and developed an understanding of elemental gases and anesthetics. Modern cocktails like the Old-Fashioned\, Gimlet\, and Gin and Tonic were born as delicious remedies for diseases and discomforts. In Doctors and Distillers\, cocktails and spirits expert Camper English reveals how and why the contents of our medicine and liquor cabinets were\, until surprisingly recently\, one and the same. \nAn in-person and virtual presentation by Camper English\, cocktails and spirits writer and speaker

SUMMARY:Peoplescapes
DESCRIPTION:Join Litquake and artist Nancy Calef for a presentation of new paintings entitled Peoplescapes. Inspired by the many faces of North Beach and beyond\, this collection hones in on the fervent energy of the Bay Area with sweeping crowd-scapes detailing the diverse personalities that are often overlooked amidst the hubbub of a downtown intersection\, a farmers market\, or a BART car. Nancy’s work reframes these spaces as places of discovery\, opportunity\, and connection by reminding us of the beauty of individuality against the backdrop of a crowd. \n\nLive music by Bob Bralove\, Patti Weiss\, Nancy Calef\, and Ben Ames. \n\n\nThis exhibition runs through June 30\, 2023 – view by appointment.\n  \n\nA portion of proceeds from Peoplescapes will benefit Kidquake\, a project of The Litquake Foundation.

SUMMARY:Young Bloomsbury: The Generation that Redefined Love\, Freedom\, and Self-Expression in 1920s England
DESCRIPTION:with author Nino Strachey in Conversation with SFSU Professor Loretta Stec\n\nAn “illuminating” (Daily Mail\, London) exploration of the second generation of the iconic Bloomsbury Group\, who inspired their elders to new heights of creativity and passion while also pushing the boundaries of sexual freedom and gender norms in 1920s England. This event will be held on Zoom \n\nIn the years before the First World War\, a collection of writers and artists—Virginia Woolf\, E.M. Forster\, and Lytton Strachey among them—began to make a name for themselves in England and America for their irreverent spirit and provocative works of literature\, art\, and criticism. They called themselves the Bloomsbury Group and by the 1920s\, they were at the height of their influence. \nThen a new generation stepped forward—creative young people who tantalized their elders with their captivating looks\, bold ideas\, and subversive energy. Young Bloomsbury introduces us to this colorful cast of characters\, including novelist Eddy Sackville-West\, who wore elaborate make-up and dressed in satin and black velvet; artist Stephen Tomlin\, who sculpted the heads of his male and female lovers; and author Julia Strachey\, who wrote a searing tale of blighted love. Talented and productive\, these larger-than-life figures had high-achieving professional lives and extremely complicated emotional lives. \nThe group had always celebrated sexual equality and freedom in private\, feeling that every person had the right to live and love in the way they chose. But as transgressive self-expression became more public\, this younger generation gave Old Bloomsbury a new voice. Revealing an aspect of history not yet explored and with “effervescent detail” (Juliet Nicolson\, author of Frostquake)\, Young Bloomsbury celebrates an open way of living and loving that would not be embraced for another hundred years.
