SUMMARY:Going Global with Sharp Earth
DESCRIPTION:With Sharp Earth\, type designer Lucas Sharp sought to answer the question\, “Is it possible to design a typeface for the whole world?” \nWhat began as a series of sketches drawn on a road trip through Thailand would eventually become Sharp Type’s largest typeface family to date. Developed in close collaboration with local type experts from around the world over the course of nearly 7 years\, Sharp Earth includes Latin\, Greek\, Cyrillic\, Thai\, Japanese\, Arabic\, and Devanagari—with more to come. \nIn this in-person Letterform Lecture\, Sharp will share the development\, cultural complexities\, production challenges\, technical intricacies\, and triumphs of a contemporary multi-script design that is still being defined in this pioneering field of type design\, adding to the fruitful conversation that is all too relevant in our increasingly globalized world. \nPlease note that this Letterform Lecture will not be live-streamed; however\, you may select the ticketed option to receive the video of the lecture and Q&A after the event concludes. \nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library\, where events are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:London Strife: the Great Bookbinding Strike of 1786
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, bookbinders worked for longer hours and for less pay than most artisans. In the revolutionary unease of the late eighteenth century\, the London bookbinders decided to strike for a reduction in their working day. This landed the binders in trouble\, with some ending up in jail. The Great Bookbinding Strike of 1786 is an extraordinary story of labor strife\, fine bookbinding\, early trade unionism\, and the long journey towards the forty hour week. \nDominic trained at the London College of Printing (1988-90)\, and spends his time restoring antiquarian books\, creating design bindings for exhibitions and to commission\, teaching and lecturing. \n\nRiley has made about eighty design bindings to date. These are held in places such as the British Library\, the V&A\, the the Grolier Club in New York\, and the San Francisco Public Library. He has won over twenty prizes for his bindings\, including first prize – the Paul Getty Award — in Designer Bookbinders’ International Competition in 2013. He has taught and lectured across the world and spends his summer teaching at the San Francisco Center for the Book. Dominic was elected Fellow of DB in 2009 and currently serves as President of the Society of Bookbinders. \n\nCost: $10 \nWebinars are recorded and available to all registered attendees after the webinar.

SUMMARY:August 1- Ask a Publisher AMA
DESCRIPTION:As everyone probably knows\, you or your agent needs to get your book or proposal into the hands of an interested editor; that’s the first hurdle. \nA well-crafted proposal\, an agent with good relationships\, and choosing the right editors to approach are the first steps. \nWhat most would-be authors don’t know is that the editor has to turn around and sell you to an editorial board. The sales management\, more often than not\, makes the decisions. \nIf sales and marketing think they can sell your book\, then you’ve got a wonderful chance of getting published. \nSo how do you sell your book to a publisher? \nIf it’s your first book\, you have no Nielsen Bookscan number to get in the way. That can be a blessing\, but you have to prove that you are an “influencer” that can sell your book and provide the publisher’s sales force with the ammo they need to go out to the trade. \nPublishing veteran Peter Rubie will help you navigate the rapids of book publishing so you can find the perfect home for your books. Bring all your questions about book publishing so you can learn from some of the best in the business!

SUMMARY:The Material Culture of Advertising: Treasures from the Winterthur Library’s Collection of Trade Literature
DESCRIPTION:Before Amazon\, before big box stores\, and even before mailboxes sagged under the weight of catalogs in the mid-20th century\, customers and shop-owners alike turned to a wide variety of media to select their purchases\, and to aspire to grander lifestyles. Trade cards\, trade catalogs\, advertising ephemera\, and sales samples illuminate the art of buying\, selling\, and dreaming in the past\, painting a picture of the everyday lives of Americans as consumers. These items can be quite beautiful – they were created to facilitate sales\, after all – and reflect broader aesthetic trends\, as well as advertising styles\, cultural values\, and the distribution of products historically. And beyond its intended use as a promotional tool\, trade media often found a second life at the hands of 19th century scrapbookers. \nThe dynamic nature of trade material makes it a valuable tool for research\, as well as creative inspiration. The Winterthur Library\, located outside Wilmington\, Delaware\, holds a vibrant and vast collection of such trade material\, including fabric swatch books\, hand-drawn watercolor catalogs\, engraved promotional cards\, chromolithographed labels\, and more – hundreds of thousands of items. Join Winterthur Library Curator of Special Collections Allie Alvis as they journey through 400 years of advertising and promotion in America and Europe\, highlighting some of the wonderful (and sometimes weird) trade treasures from the library’s collection and presenting them in the broader milieu of material culture. \nA virtual presentation by Alexandra Alvis\, book historian and curator\, special collections\, Winterthur Museum\, Garden & Library

SUMMARY:Citizen Printer Exhibition Reception
DESCRIPTION:Letterform Archive’s fifth gallery exhibition\, Amos Paul Kennedy\, Jr.: Citizen Printer\, explores the bold language\, graphic typography\, and colorful layering in a wide variety of printed artifacts such as broadsides\, maps\, church fans\, handbills and oversized posters produced throughout his career. \nEncompassing the evolving trajectory of Black liberation in the United States\, from growing up in the ’60s during the Civil Rights Era\, to the rise of Black Nationalism in the ’70s\, to the present Post-Civil Rights era\, Kennedy has seen how these movements have shaped Black identity in the United States and has drawn from this as inspiration. \nCurated by designer and author Kelly Walters\, Letterform Archive’s exhibition also includes a few lesser-known artist’s books that showcase Kennedy’s early start with letterpress printing and bookbinding. Together\, these works demonstrate the rich cultural traditions of Black printing and the importance of Black authorship. \nJoin Kennedy and Walters at Letterform Archive for this solo exhibition featuring over 150 type-driven artifacts from the self-described “humble negro printer.” We’ll provide refreshments and a wonderful opportunity to engage in conversation with Kennedy\, Walters\, and others in our staff and community.

SUMMARY:Let's Talk Layouts
DESCRIPTION:Grids offer a structured framework for layouts that assist with the consistency and coherence of design—but most frequently they seem to adhere to a rectilinear form with placement outside of that form either seeming “random” or “breaking the grid.” \nThis informative session challenges what you already know about layout and looks at how layouts can be built with the help of other Creative Cloud applications or within InDesign natively. \n\nAbout the Presenter\nTony Harmer (a.k.a The Design Ninja) is best described as a creative utility-knife and learning-content author with a long career in design\, illustration\, photography\, video and animation. His LinkedIn Learning courses have had over 2.2 million learners and he is a popular speaker/presenter with his often-off-the-wall sessions that always provide a ton of tips\, techniques\, insights and inspirations delivered with humour and enthusiasm that is totally infectious.

SUMMARY:The Sugar King of California: The Life of Claus Spreckels
DESCRIPTION:Join author and historian Sandra Bonura in conversation online on her new book\, The Sugar King of California: The Life of Claus Spreckels. \nThe Sugar King of California is the astonishingly intimate story of one of the most controversial entrepreneurs of the 19th century – a rule-breaking visionary who through his sugar empire became one of the richest Americans in history alongside John D. Rockefeller\, Warren Buffett\, and Bill Gates. Bonura tells the rags-to-riches story of Spreckels’s role in the developments of the sugarcane industry in the American West and across the Pacific\, triumphing in a milieu rife with cronyism and corruption and ultimately transforming California’s industry & labor. But there’s always a cost for single-minded determination; the legendary family quarrels even included a murder charge. Spreckels’s biography is one of business triumph & tragedy\, a portrait of a family torn apart by money\, jealousy\, and ego.

SUMMARY:Self Publishing 101 with Claire Jones
DESCRIPTION:There are a whole range of publishing platforms available to those of us who wish to self-publish our book(s). Simply search “Self Publishing Platforms” online and you will find a list of articles touting: “The 17 BEST Self-Publishing Companies of 2023”\, “8 Best Free Self-Publishing Sites”\, “The 15 Best Self Publishing Companies to Support Your Writing Career”\, or “10 Best Self-Publishing Companies You Should Know”.  \nEach of them explains their rigorous “vetting” process and subsequent “qualified” picks\, and\, while the same platforms do show up on some of these lists\, the rankings are never predictable. \n\n\nSo who really knows which one is the best?  \nIt really boils down to how much you want to spend\, where and how you want the book distributed\, how you want to treat your copyright permissions\, and what kind of backend reporting system you want. \nI’m not going to list the various features of each of the platforms (that’s what those “Best Of” articles are for). What I will do is tell you why I chose the platforms I did. \n\nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Editing With Disability/Chronic Illness
DESCRIPTION:This coffee chat centers people who work as editors and are living with disability and/or chronic illness. It is open to everyone. The idea was partly inspired by an active peer group currently hosted by the Society of Authors (https://www.societyofauthors.org/Groups/Authors-Disabilities-Illnesses-Network). \nGroup agreements that will be open for discussion at the start of the chat:\n* Disclosure (of illness/disability/etc.) is welcome. Disclosure is not required.\n* There are no requirements. We participate (or not) in the ways that work for us.\n* We take care of ourselves. Stretch\, eat\, drink\, take a break\, etc.\n* We can’t be articulate all the time. We give each other the benefit of the doubt and ask questions.\n* We keep confidentiality: Learning goes\, stories stay. \nThe online chat this Thursday will have an open agenda\, loosely focused on work-life: How do we define\, handle\, and sustain our work as editors. What kinds of projects are a good fit? How do we obtain enough but not too much work (if that is even possible in editing!)? What have we learned and what can we learn from each other?

SUMMARY:The Jazzmen
DESCRIPTION:Join Larry Tye\, the New York Times bestselling author of Satchel and Bobby Kennedy\, in conversation with acclaimed interviewer and radio host Dr. Michael Krasny on Tye’s new book\, The Jazzmen. The Jazzmen is a sweeping and spellbinding portrait of the longtime kings of jazz—Duke Ellington\, Louis Armstrong\, and Count Basie—who\, born within a few years of one another\, overcame racist exclusion and violence to become the most popular entertainers on the planet. \nWhat is lesser known about these groundbreakers is that they were bound not just by their music or even the discrimination that they\, like nearly all Black performers of their day\, routinely encountered. Each defied and ultimately overcame racial boundaries by opening America’s eyes and souls to the magnificence of their music. In the process they wrote the soundtrack for the civil rights movement. \nBased on more than 250 interviews\, this exhaustively researched book brings alive the history of Black America in the early-to-mid 1900s through the singular lens of the country’s most gifted\, engaging\, and enduring African-American musicians.

SUMMARY:California\, a Slave State
DESCRIPTION:California owes its origins and sunny prosperity to slavery. Spanish invaders captured Indigenous people to build the chain of Catholic missions. Russian otter hunters shipped Alaska Natives—the first slaves transported into California—and launched a Pacific slave triangle to China. Plantation slaves were marched across the plains for the Gold Rush. San Quentin Prison incubated California’s carceral state. Kidnapped Chinese girls were sold in caged brothels in early San Francisco. Indian boarding schools supplied new farms and hotels with unfree child workers. \nBy looking west to California\, Jean Pfaelzer upends our understanding of slavery as a North-South struggle and reveals how the enslaved in California fought\, fled\, and resisted human bondage. In unyielding research and vivid interviews\, Pfaelzer exposes how California gorged on slavery\, an appetite that persists today in a global trade in human beings lured by promises of jobs but who instead are imprisoned in sweatshops and remote marijuana grows\, or sold as nannies and sex workers. \nA virtual presentation by Jean Pfaelzer\, author and professor emerita of English and American Studies\, University of Delaware
