SUMMARY:Letterform Archive | Strikethrough! Typographic Messages of Protest
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception for \n Strikethrough: Typographic Messages of Protest\, a collection of over one hundred objects that chart a typographic chant of resistance across more than a century of protest movements. The exhibition showcases typographic anger and agency as seen in the streets\, on the printed page\, and even on the bodies of demonstrators. \nThis collaboration between Polymode’s Silas Munro and Letterform Archive’s Stephen Coles began during the upswell of the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020. Throughout the exhibition\, Munro and Coles lead us on an exploration of the many ways we voice dissent (VOTE!\, RESIST!\, LOVE!\, TEACH!\, and STRIKE!). \nExperience the Strikethrough exhibit and then stay to connect with the curators\, some of the artists featured in the exhibition\, and the Letterform Archive board and team. Celebrate over delicious refreshments and surprise performances. \nRegister to attend

SUMMARY:The End of PostScript Type 1 Fonts (with Thomas Phinney)
DESCRIPTION:Adobe (and others) are discontinuing Postscript Type 1 fonts. Come discover what you need to know and do about it. \n  \n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\n\nWhy is Adobe discontinuing support for Type 1 fonts?\nWho else has already discontinued support or is about to?\nWhat does this mean for you as a user\, today and in the future?\nWhat will continue working and where might things break?\nWhat are your options for conversion/upgrades\, and the associated issues—financial\, practical\, and legal?\nHow compatible (or incompatible) are OpenType equivalents of your existing Type 1 fonts?\n\nAll this plus a Q&A\, from one of the people who helped put the writing on the wall to end PostScript Type 1. \n\nYou must register with Eventbrite. \n  \n\nThomas Phinney helped lead Adobe’s conversion of their font library to OpenType in his time there (1997–2008)\, lastly as product manager for fonts and typography. He is a type designer and forensic specialist\, as well as the former CEO of FontLab. Phinney was on the board of ATypI from 2004–2020\, mostly as treasurer. He has four patents and a medal\, an MS in printing/typography from RIT\, and an MBA from UC Berkeley. His team’s open-source Science Gothic is a 4-axis variable OpenType font\, and he currently develops OpenType variable icon fonts for Google.

DESCRIPTION:LA InDesign Users Group presents … \n \nRegister: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/20-most-common-indesign-mistakes-tickets-404227895517 \n\n\n  \nMore often than not\, we learn to use InDesign from many different sources: tutorials\, articles\, etc. This may lead to having incomplete information\, and making mistakes without even realizing it! Learning a new skill\, like how to use InDesign\, takes time and energy\, and that should be rewarded. The last thing you want is to get discouraged by a few mistakes. In this presentation\, you will learn to avoid mistakes with working individually but also when working in global teams. \nTypes of mistakes: \n\nText layout mistakes\nText placement mistakes\nLanguage management mistakes\nImage and color mistakes\nFunction mistakes\n\nThis presentation will help you: \n\nUnderstand what mistakes you might be doing\nLearn how to fix your documents\nLearn new tools that will save you lots of time (and stimulate your curiosity)\nImprove the look of your documents\nCollaborate better with other InDesign users\n\nAfter applying these suggestions\, you won’t want to go back to the way you were working before! After the presentation: \n\nYou’ll know how to use InDesign better\nYou’ll work faster in InDesign\nProducing your documents will take less time\n\nAdditionally\, for global teams: \n\nYou will have a better understanding of the challenges global teams face\nYou will structure a better workflow\nTranslating documents created by you will cost less and take less time\n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter\n\n\nStefano Bernardi was born and raised in Italy. As a kid\, he wanted to be a football player. But as he grew up\, he became fascinated by life-changing entrepreneurial stories and that became his new goal. He told a friend\, “One day I’ll have a business\, and you will work with me.” \nIn 2015\, Bernardi co-founded Redokun\, a company that makes an online tool to manage and collaborate on marketing translations. Based in Singapore\, the company has helped thousands of marketers improve their workflow\, reduce time-to-market\, and cut translation costs often by more than 50%. \nAt Redokun\, Bernardi spends most of his time helping customers optimize their InDesign workflow and curates the company blog that helps 100\,000 people each month with InDesign issues. He also contributes InDesignSecrets and CreativePro Magazine. He speaks English\, Italian and Chinese. \nBernardi describes himself as a people person. “I feel energized when I am in a crowd\,” he says. “I love cats and I love solving problems.”

SUMMARY:Exhibit: Cognitive Distance--The Bookworks and Thoughtforms of Timothy Ely
DESCRIPTION:Compelling\, contemplative\, and visionary: these are words that have been used to describe the work of artist and bookbinder Timothy C. Ely. Showcasing approximately forty manuscript books\, drawings and prints created by Ely over the past fifty years\, Cognitive Distance: the Bookworks and Thoughtforms of Timothy C. Ely introduces gallery visitors to Ely’s extraordinary version of world-building. Drawing from traditional fine binding\, printmaking\, and manuscript books\, Timothy C. Ely has developed his own hybrid ways of creating work\, all the while remaining true to his artistic vision. The techniques and materials of fine bookbinding are immediately apparent in his work; by pushing these traditional aspects in new directions\, the resulting works inspire and astonish.

SUMMARY:Intro to Affinity Publisher
DESCRIPTION:Find out what InDesign’s biggest competition since Quark is all about.\n\n\n\n\nAdobe InDesign might be the 800-pound gorilla\, but Affinity Publisher is the elephant in the room. This month\, Benjamin Viney takes us on a tour and provides an overall introduction of what Affinity calls the “next generation of professional publishing software” and what Apple chose as its “Mac App of the Year.” \nAffinity says its Publisher app allows you to combine images\, graphics\, and text to make beautiful layouts ready for publication. Create books\, magazines\, marketing materials\, social media templates\, website mock-ups\, and more. \nOkay. So does InDesign. \nBut\, according to Affinity\, Publisher is directly linked to other Affinity apps through StudioLink\, the first technology of its kind that allows you to switch apps instantly. Access the advanced photo editing features of Affinity Photo or the precise vector tools of Affinity Designer without ever leaving Affinity Publisher. According to Affinity\, it’s the most fluid workflow ever conceived in a creative suite of applications\, and the reason they named the apps Affinity. \nIn addition\, Ben will explore some of the new features launched earlier this month in Affinity Publisher Version 2. \nFind out about: \n\nPersona switching\nSmart master pages\nAutomatic tables of contents\nNon-destructive adjustment layers\nLayer clipping\nVector tools\nAutoflow\n\nAnd the best for last? No subscription needed. Affinity Publisher costs just $54.99. Period. \n\n\nBenjamin Viney is an award-winning designer and artist with close to 12 years of design experience. Having worked with The Tate Modern\, Berkshire Hathaway\, Red Bull Racing\, The Guardian\, The British Library\, and The RHS\, he excels at high-end brand design and document creation. \nHe studied Fine Art at Nottingham Trent University and then quickly progressed in the world of graphic design\, combining creativity with modern design practices. Now working for Serif Europe ltd as the Product Expert for Publisher\, he spends his time helping to develop the application and creating online tutorials to enable users to get the most out of the Affinity creative suite. \nKnown for his love of cooking\, art\, and books\, he spends his downtime developing new recipes\, painting\, and reading.

SUMMARY:Celebrating 2020 Vision & SFCB's Design Binding Intensive Students
DESCRIPTION:This event celebrates the conclusion of SFCB’s month-long Design Binding Intensive workshop\, which took place in July 2022. Workshop instructor Dominic Riley will give a brief talk; this year’s student cohort will share their completed fine bindings and stories related to creating their individual works of art.  \n2020 was the one-hundredth anniversary of the Society of Wood Engravers(link is external). To mark the occasion\, Pat Randle of the Nomad Press (link is external)collaborated with collector Nigel Hamway to create this remarkable book. In an edition of 340 copies\, 2020 Vision is being hailed as one of the most important private press books of our time. Hamway commissioned nineteen contemporary artists to create a new engraving\, also asking them to choose a historical artist who has inspired them. Additionally\, Hamway provided original blocks from his own collection for the printing of the book; Oak Knoll Press writes about 2020 Vision “The result\, printed by Nomad Letterpress at the Whittington Press\, places the engravings of twentieth-century greats – John Farleigh\, John Nash\, Monica Poole\, Geoffrey Wales\, Gertrude Hermes et al. – alongside today’s artists and presents the viewer with a snapshot of the changing nature of the engraver’s craft.”  \nOver the course of SFCB’s month-long immersive class\, students worked through the steps involved in making a fine design binding in a small group setting. In-class lessons addressed complex design execution\, leather decoration\, creative gold tooling\, and box making. Additionally\, workshop students worked closely with instructor Dominic Riley\, acquiring tips and tricks of the trade garnered from Riley’s thirty years as a fine binder\, conservator\, artist\, teacher\, and exhibitor. \n*Masks are encouraged but not required at SFCB events.
