SUMMARY:Continental Reckoning: The American West in the Age of Expansion
DESCRIPTION:In Continental Reckoning renowned historian Elliott West presents a sweeping narrative of the American West and its vital role in the transformation of the nation. In the 1840s\, by which time the United States had expanded to the Pacific\, what would become the West was home to numerous vibrant Native cultures and vague claims by other nations. Thirty years later it was organized into states and territories and bound into the nation and world by an infrastructure of rails\, telegraph wires\, and roads and by a racial and ethnic order\, with its Indigenous peoples largely dispossessed and confined to reservations. \nUnprecedented exploration uncovered the West’s extraordinary resources\, beginning with the discovery of gold in California within days of the United States acquiring the territory following the Mexican-American War. As those resources were developed\, often by the most modern methods and through modern corporate enterprise\, half of the contiguous United States was physically transformed. Continental Reckoning guides the reader through the rippling\, multiplying changes wrought in the western half of the country\, arguing that these changes should be given equal billing with the Civil War in this crucial transition of national life. \nAs the West was acquired\, integrated into the nation\, and made over physically and culturally\, the United States shifted onto a course of accelerated economic growth\, a racial reordering and redefinition of citizenship\, engagement with global revolutions of science and technology\, and invigorated involvement with the larger world. The creation of the West and the emergence of modern America were intimately related. Neither can be understood without the other. With masterful prose and a critical eye\, West presents a fresh approach to the dawn of the American West\, one of the most pivotal periods of American history. \nA virtual presentation by Elliot West\, historian and author.

SUMMARY:Editing With Disability/Chronic Illness
DESCRIPTION:This coffee chat centers people who work as editors and are living with disability and/or chronic illness. It is open to everyone. The idea was partly inspired by an active peer group currently hosted by the Society of Authors (https://www.societyofauthors.org/Groups/Authors-Disabilities-Illnesses-Network). \nGroup agreements that will be open for discussion at the start of the chat:\n* Disclosure (of illness/disability/etc.) is welcome. Disclosure is not required.\n* There are no requirements. We participate (or not) in the ways that work for us.\n* We take care of ourselves. Stretch\, eat\, drink\, take a break\, etc.\n* We can’t be articulate all the time. We give each other the benefit of the doubt and ask questions.\n* We keep confidentiality: Learning goes\, stories stay. \nThe online chat this Thursday will have an open agenda\, loosely focused on work-life: How do we define\, handle\, and sustain our work as editors. What kinds of projects are a good fit? How do we obtain enough but not too much work (if that is even possible in editing!)? What have we learned and what can we learn from each other? \nThis event is free to attend and open to all editors.

SUMMARY:April 15th: Workshop: Position Your Book for Success with Dave Farrow
DESCRIPTION:Marketing expert Dave Farrow is the two-time Guinness World Record holder for greatest memory. To earn this title\, Farrow recalled the exact order of 59 decks of shuffled playing cards using “The Farrow Memory Method.” This method was originally invented to combat Farrow’s dyslexia and ADHD and it is now a unique memory system backed by a double-blind neuroscience study from McGill University. SUMMARY:Interior/Exterior: Chinatown Reflections
DESCRIPTION:Join a discussion with writer Valerie Luu\, photographer Andria Lo\, and poet Hieu Minh Nguyen exploring intergenerational stories and reflections of the culture of Chinatown.  \nLavish in the fun\, colorful\, sartorial images and stories celebrating the residents of Chinatown. \nChinatown Pretty features beautiful portraits and heartwarming stories of trend-setting seniors across six Chinatowns. \nAndria Lo and Valerie Luu have been interviewing and photographing Chinatown’s most fashionable elders on their blog and Instagram\, Chinatown Pretty\, since 2014. Chinatown Pretty is a signature style worn by pòh pohs (grandmas) and gùng gungs (grandpas) everywhere—but it’s also a life philosophy\, mixing resourcefulness\, creativity\, and a knack for finding joy even in difficult circumstances. Photos span Chinatowns in San Francisco\, Oakland\, Los Angeles\, Chicago\, New York City\, and Vancouver. The style is a mix of modern and vintage\, high and low\, handmade and store bought clothing. This is a celebration of Chinese American culture\, active old-age\, and creative style. \nChinatown Pretty shares nuggets of philosophical wisdom and personal stories about immigration and Chinese American culture. This book is great for anyone looking for advice on how to live to a ripe old age with grace and good humor—and\, of course\, on how to stay stylish. \n  \nValerie Luu is a writer and one-half of the Vietnamese pop-up restaurant Rice Paper Scissors. She lives in San Francisco. \nAndria Lo is a freelance photographer whose work has been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle\, the New York Times\, and Wired. She lives in Berkeley.

SUMMARY:Salon Series 39: Call and Response: Histories of Designing Protest
DESCRIPTION:Protesters through time have used typography to strike through myriad forms of oppression. Their urgent\, often handmade signs\, placards\, and banners put bigots on notice that their hate has been marked for correction. Charting the histories of this material is also an artform itself. The speakers in this panel will share their research and curatorial practices on the history of protest movements across North America and the Caribbean. \nLike all Archive Salon Series events\, a recording of this presentation and panel will be available to members.

In the process\, he has become an important voice for his people\, contributing satirical commentary to international media\, raising money for charities\, and speaking at crowded halls in the capitols of Europe. His work is frequently compared to Vonnegut\, Kafka\, and Murakami. He appears here in conversation with Russia-born author Olga Zilberbourg\, followed by book sales and signing.

SUMMARY:Crying in H Mart: An Evening with Michelle Zauner and Soleil Ho
DESCRIPTION:Few writers have traced the sensuous connection between food and memory as powerfully as Michelle Zauner has done in her runaway hit memoir\, Crying in H Mart. Legions of readers have kept the book on the bestseller list for more than 60 weeks\, and for good reason. With breathtaking prose\, Zauner delves into the experience of food—our primal nourishment—and her biracial identity as a way of processing the painful loss of her mother. The New York Times calls Zauner’s memoir “an artistic triumph—artfully observed and emotionally rich.” \nZauner\, who is also a phenomenally successful indie musician performing under the band name Japanese Breakfast\, is no stranger to touring\, but the publication of her memoir early in the pandemic meant that she’s made almost no in-person appearances for her book—until now. \nIn celebration of the paperback release of Crying in H Mart\, the Bay Area Book Festival is honored to host Zauner’s only Bay Area book tour appearance this spring. She’ll be in conversation with San Francisco Chronicle restaurant critic Soleil Ho at Oakland’s gorgeous California Ballroom in what promises to be a wide-ranging discussion of love\, loss\, cultural identity\, the art of memoir writing\, and\, of course\, food.

SUMMARY:Dancing in Their Light: A Daughter's Unfinished Memoir
DESCRIPTION:A colorful compilation of inspiring and unfathomable stories woven together by humor\, pathos\, confluences of fate\, and the eternal guiding hands of the author’s ancestors. \n \nDebbie Chinn begins this colorful memoir by tracing her roots back to China. Horrors of war\, the Japanese occupation of China\, the brutalities of starvation and poverty\, and the Communist takeover of China in 1949 forced her family to flee their homeland\, becoming immigrants in the United States.

SUMMARY:Salon Series 37: Recovering the Forgotten Women of Metal Type Design with Bethany Qualls
DESCRIPTION:Dig into overlooked design history and get a sneak peek at Letterform Archive’s forthcoming research hub on women in metal type.\nEver wonder who originally designed your favorite typefaces? Many of the fonts we use today (such as Futura\, Helvetica\, Baskerville) originated in the metal type era (late 1800s to 1950s) when hot metal typesetting became the norm for printing\, revolutionizing what had been a mostly manual process for centuries. Much of today’s typographic design relies on norms from this period when Linotype and Monotype dominated. Yet\, with few exceptions\, women’s contributions in the metal type era have mostly been erased or ignored. \nFor this Salon\, Bethany Qualls takes us on a deep dive into these often-overlooked women and their contributions to type history. Even though others have researched early women type designers\, no single\, publicly accessible resource exists to synthesize all of what we do know. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at her role as a Mellon Public Scholar in creating Letterform’s forthcoming finding aid and research hub which aims to fill this gap. Highlights will include examples of type specimens from the LA collection\, what’s been left out of most English language resources thus far\, tips on how to research in languages you don’t speak written in alphabets you can’t read\, and the project’s future phases. \n  \nOn-site and online.

SUMMARY:The Epicenter: Taleen Voskuni with Jen Siraganian
DESCRIPTION:Litquake’s Epicenter is excited to launch our Spring 2023 season\, with Sorry\, Bro\, the debut novel by Bay Area author Taleen Voskuni. This vibrant and heartfelt queer rom-com\, set amidst the current San Francisco tech community\, follows a young Armenian-American woman as she rediscovers her roots and embraces who she really is. \nWhen Nareh Bedrossian’s non-Armenian boyfriend gets down on one knee and proposes to her in front of a room full of drunken tech boys\, she realizes it’s time to find someone who shares her idea of romance. Her mother\, armed with plenty of mom-guilt and a spreadsheet of Facebook-stalked Armenian men\, convinces Nar to attend “Explore Armenia\,” a month-long series of events in the city. But it’s not the mom-approved playboy doctor or the wealthy engineer who catch Nar’s eye—it’s Erebuni\, a woman as immersed in the witchy arts as she is in preserving Armenian identity. Suddenly\, with Erebuni as her wingwoman\, the events feel like far less of a chore\, and much more of an adventure. Who knew cooking up kuftes together could be so…sexy? Taleen Voskuni appears in conversation with Los Gatos Poet Laureate Jen Siraganian.

SUMMARY:March Member Meeting: Quantifying Your Editing Impact
DESCRIPTION:Have you bought a piece of clothing from a store\, and\, when you took it to the cashier\, had the person checking you out say\, “this color will look great on you!” This is a sales strategy\, a subtle but still manipulative attempt to build brand loyalty—it’s a way for the retailer to assure you that you made a good decision when you chose to buy with them. \nHow might freelance editors use similar strategies in our own business? What are our options for applying sales psychology ethically\, without manipulating our clients? In this short presentation\, Letitia Henville will describe how she captures and shares quantifiable measures of the difference her editing makes with her clients. As a group\, we’ll then discuss other freelance-appropriate sales strategies\, as well as the ethics of applying tricks from consumer psychology and behavioral insights to our business practices. \nLetitia Henville (she/her)\, PhD\, is an award-winning instructor and editor who helps researchers to articulate their goals to an audience of their peers. She lives and works on the unceded\, stolen territory of the Səl̓ílwətaʔ and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm people on the land now called the Dunbar region in Vancouver. She writes the monthly advice column “Ask Dr. Editor” for University Affairs\, and can be found online at shortishard.com and writingwellishard.com. \nThis event is free and open to all editors.

SUMMARY:Letters from Buenos Aires with Muk Monsalve
DESCRIPTION:Take a journey through the locations and architectural details in Buenos Aires that inspired a typographic textile.\nSince 2018\, Muk Monsalve has been hosting and curating type walks around Buenos Aires with her art and business partner\, Lucía Soto. This project\, called Letra Capital\, allows them to highlight and share the love they feel while walking their city. \nWhen their type walks halted during the pandemic\, they developed a souvenir for Letra Capital: a typographic scarf recreating the journey. They had so much fun developing it that the product ended up becoming a collection called Musa del Asfalto. The scarves and cover ups are not only beautiful\, they also tell stories through their design\, type\, and phrases. The typefaces they use in the collection\, Arrabal and Ciudadela\, were custom designed–not revivals–and take direct inspiration from landmarks and landscapes of Buenos Aires. \nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library\, where events are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Contempo Jo Mora
DESCRIPTION:The creative career of Joseph Jacinto “Jo” Mora (1876-1947) was both compelling and diverse. A painter\, muralist\, sculptor\, building designer\, cartographer\, actor\, set designer\, cowboy\, and husband and father\, Mora’s art work sprang from his interests in numerous subjects including Native Americans and cowboys\, the American landscape\, California history and its missions\, the classics of Chaucer\, and Mora’s love of animals. \nThe artistic legacy of Jo Mora continues to evolve. Upon Mora’s passing in 1947\, his son Jo Jr. lovingly worked to spread the word about his father’s creative accomplishments. That endeavor has been passed along to Peter Hiller\, the Jo Mora Collection Curator. \nJoin Peter as he shares how Jo Mora’s art has\, and continues to\, find its way into popular culture and the wider world in both traditional and surprising ways. \nIn in-person and virtual presentation by Peter Hiller\, author\, historian\, and Jo Mora Collection Curator for the Monterey History and Art Association

SUMMARY:The U.S. Constitution and the Mystery Novel\, by Micheal O’Connor
DESCRIPTION:Though not everyone realizes it\, the U.S. Constitution can have serious repercussions on a mystery novel. Search warrant requirements\, Miranda warnings\, and prohibitions against rubber hoses are just a few of the many constraints placed on police detectives. While private detectives are not directly affected by the Constitution\, disregarding the rules can have negative consequences for them as well. We’ll explore the highlights of these restrictions\, and the different impacts they have on police and private detectives. Keep those pesky legal fact-checkers at bay!
