SUMMARY:Editors Helping Editors
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our “Editors Helping Editors” meeting. Bring your problems\, big and small\, as well as your thinking caps. We’ll work together to solve event-goers quandaries and questions\, which could range from common questions like how to find clients in a particular field (say academic editing) to more situation-specific issues like why a particular macro isn’t working in Word. The only topic that’s off limits is setting rates\, as that can be seen as price-fixing. However\, we can talk about rate-adjacent topics\, such as tools and data we use when setting rates\, what counts as a tax write-off\, and how/when to raise rates. \nThis event is now open to all editors and will not be recorded.

SUMMARY:Editing With Disability/Chronic Illness
DESCRIPTION:This coffee chat centers people who work as editors and are living with disability and/or chronic illness. It is open to everyone. The idea was partly inspired by an active peer group currently hosted by the Society of Authors (https://www.societyofauthors.org/Groups/Authors-Disabilities-Illnesses-Network). \nGroup agreements that will be open for discussion at the start of the chat:\n* Disclosure (of illness/disability/etc.) is welcome. Disclosure is not required.\n* There are no requirements. We participate (or not) in the ways that work for us.\n* We take care of ourselves. Stretch\, eat\, drink\, take a break\, etc.\n* We can’t be articulate all the time. We give each other the benefit of the doubt and ask questions.\n* We keep confidentiality: Learning goes\, stories stay. \nThe online chat this Thursday will have an open agenda\, loosely focused on work-life: How do we define\, handle\, and sustain our work as editors. What kinds of projects are a good fit? How do we obtain enough but not too much work (if that is even possible in editing!)? What have we learned and what can we learn from each other?

SUMMARY:Roadworks 2023: Steamroller Printing Festival
DESCRIPTION:About the Festival:\nThe San Francisco Center for the Book’s annual Roadworks Steamroller Printing Festival is an all-day public printmaking and book arts extravaganza that includes free hands-on printmaking and book arts activities\, demonstrations\, vendors\, open house\, and more. \nAbout Steamroller Printing:\nWith roots going back hundreds of years\, relief printing — a process where a protruding surface is inked and brought into contact with paper – is one of the oldest methods of printing illustrations in books. \nEach year at the Roadworks Steamroller Printing Festival we celebrate this facet of book arts history in the biggest\, most spectacular way we can think of: by printing linocuts using a 7-ton 1924 Buffalo Springfield steamroller  — provided by our friends Roots of Motive Power(link is external) — and the road surface of Rhode Island Street as an enormous makeshift printing press! A team of featured artists\, printers and steamroller operators create large-scale Classic print and smaller-scale Personal prints (details below) during the Festival. \nClassic Prints and Personal Prints are literally “print-on-demand”; they are available only during the daylong event and are limited edition. Each print purchased during SFCB’s Roadworks event helps raise funds that directly benefit San Francisco Center for the Book\, our workshops\, exhibitions\, and our free public events (like Roadworks!) \nThe Roadworks Steamroller Printing Festival has become a popular tradition in the Do.Re.Mi (Dogpatch-Potrero-Hill-Mission) Arts District of San Francisco\, attracting printmaking\, artist book\, printing\, and general art enthusiasts of all ages.

SUMMARY:Book Collecting Now
DESCRIPTION:Join Collections Advisor and author of Contemporary Issues in Rare Book & Manuscript Collecting\, Spencer W. Stuart as he discusses case studies from his professional practice as well as the past to chart the life cycle of collections and the collectors who build them. \n  \nThrough these examinations he will touch on important things collectors should consider at key moments of their collecting such as motivations that move one to collect\, how to maintain perspective while actively collecting\, and finally the legacy of a collection as well as deaccessioning strategies. \n  \nReferenced throughout are the recent structural changes that have taken place in the fine art photography\, rare books and printed material markets\, resulting in a more transparent ecosystem to participate in as a collector as well as the emergence of tendencies Spencer has observed with new collectors that he feels are redefining notions of who collects and what influences their focus. \n  \nCollecting is a journey. Executed with foresight\, it can be a source of both self-exploration and understanding of the world. Through his talk\, Spencer seeks to inspire new collectors and reinvigorate those with an established focus. \n  \nThis discussion will be facilitated by Myles Cooper\, MLIS\, Mechanics’ Institute Library Manager.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Modern Type Design
DESCRIPTION:with Kel Troughton\nDesign your own original typeface in 10 weeks!\nDuring this 10-week online course (meeting on Monday evenings from October 2-December 11—no meeting on November 20)\, you will create your own original typefaces as you gain an understanding of the methodologies and software used to produce high-quality digital type. \nThe primary goal of this workshop is to show you how to systematically think about type and to help you successfully make a font. The course will focus on techniques and best practices for designing and spacing type\, introducing you to the conceptual foundations of type design\, including proofing and testing work. You will work in Glyphs App throughout the week and upload homework before each meeting for review. Throughout the workshop you will learn various lessons about type\, history\, sketching\, and get weekly feedback on your type projects. \nThis 10-week workshop is suitable for anyone just starting to think about type and for designers with some type design experience\, hoping to further develop their skills and processes. Some experience with drawing Bézier curves (in Adobe Illustrator\, for instance) and with typography is recommended but not required. This is a great course for anyone interested in applying to the Type West Postgraduate Certificate Program in Type Design\, which will be accepting applications throughout the month of October 2023. \nA free temporary license for Glyphs App will be made available to all participants. The class is capped at fifteen students to allow for more one-on-one instruction.

SUMMARY:We are All in it Together: Power of the Press
DESCRIPTION:The saying goes\, “Freedom of the press is guaranteed only to those who own one” but what if the community’s words could be printed and freely shared…Thea Sizemore of Kavamore Press is doing just that. \nJoin us for an uplifting talk with Thea Sizemore about a social print project that is geared toward elevating the voices of the community. The project began early in the pandemic\, providing an immediate and meaningful social justice service for the general public though protest poster production and distribution. A neighbor gifted a defunct newspaper box which was then up-cycled for the project and “Fresh Prints” Box was born. What happened after that is the beauty of human nature…. connection at a distance\, community growth through the power of the press. \nUsing traditional equipment from the 1900s\, hand set type and ink on paper\, Sizemore has been able to build a new kinda “social media” that is tethered to the rich history of the printing press. Sizemore will show examples of posters\, discuss working methods and most importantly share how interactions with strangers brought light to a dark pandemic period and started a long term art practice. \nAn in-person and virtual presentation by Thea Sizemore\, letterpress printer\, artist\, and instructor
