She recently misapplied her professors’ hard work to The Night Parade of 100 Demons and the short novel Driftwood. The first book of her Hugo Award-nominated Victorian adventure series The Memoirs of Lady Trent\, A Natural History of Dragons\, was a finalist for the World Fantasy Award. Her other works include the Doppelganger duology\, the urban fantasy Wilders series\, the Onyx Court historical fantasies\, the Varekai novellas\, and over sixty short stories\, as well as the New Worlds series of worldbuilding guides. Together with Alyc Helms as M.A. Carrick\, she is the author of the upcoming Rook and Rose epic fantasy trilogy\, beginning with The Mask of Mirrors. SUMMARY:My biography is the history of California: Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo and his Recuerdos
DESCRIPTION:Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo (1807–90) grew up in Spanish California\, became a leading military and political figure in Mexican California\, and participated in some of the founding events of U.S. California\, such as the Monterey Constitutional Convention and the first legislature. Like many Mexican Californios he lost most of his land to squatter occupation and expensive legal proceedings during the first few decades of American rule. \nA generation after the U.S. conquest of California\, Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo set out to write the story of the land he knew so well. He aimed to dispel the romantic vision that was beginning to dominate the interpretation of the state’s history before the American conquest. Vallejo sought to correct misrepresentations of California’s past\, which dismissed as insignificant the pre–gold rush Spanish and Mexican periods\, and conflated them into one “Mission era.” He sought to convince the new rulers of the land in which he had been born that the Mexican people had laid the foundation for the California in which they were now all living. \nTo this end he spent more than a year and a half composing a five-volume history\, which he titled Recuerdos. It is the most complete account of California before the gold rush written by someone who resided in California at the time. \nRose Marie Beebe and Robert M. Senkewicz have translated Vallejo’s Recuerdos and have brought to light a remarkable perspective\, often firsthand\, on important events in early California history. Their efforts restore a critical chapter to the story of California and the American West. \nAn in-person and virtual presentation by Rose Marie Beebe\, professor emerita of Spanish literature at Santa Clara University and Robert M. Sharing work from Jade’s archives\, Dole will bring to light important understanding of the handstyle master himself. \n\nKate Dole is the former co-owner of Art Primo SF\, a graffiti art supply store of the successful Seattle-based ecommerce company Artprimo.com. A very close loved one of Leonard “Jade” Liu and patron of the graffiti scene for the past 20 years\, Dole shares her personal insights on the history of the Bay Area graffiti scene and legendary life of Jade through oral history.

DESCRIPTION:with Robert Liu-Trujillo\, Nisha Sethi\nRob Liu-Trujillo and Nisha Sethi of Oakland-based collective Trust Your Struggle speak on graffiti and its influence on their art practices.\n  \nTrust Your Struggle is an multi-generational Oakland-based collective of artists\, educators\, and cultural workers who are dedicated to mobilising their communities on social justice\, environmental sustainability\, and community organising through public art. We are thrilled to be joined by both Nisha Sethi and Rob Liu-Trujillo who are active members of this collective\, as they speak on their relationship to graffiti\, and its impact on them as working artists in the Bay Area.  \n\nLike all Archive Salon Series events\, a recording of this presentation and panel will be available to members. \n\nRobert Liu-Trujillo is father\, husband\, artist and an author based in Oakland California. He’s the author and illustrator of Fresh Juice and has illustrated several other picture books. As a woman of color who is deeply invested in uplifting her community\, Nisha’s work serves as seeds for the resistance in which bright\, bold lettering and images dance their way into the streets where they echo the chants and songs of the people. Early on\, Nisha developed a passion for typography and was deeply influenced by childhood trips to her motherland India where she was exposed to the fascinating world of hand-painted film posters. Back home in the Bay Area\, Nisha was brought up in the graffiti scene\, gravitating towards street art with powerful messages. \nNisha’s art serves as a call to action while constantly being informed by iconic political art and movements from the 1960’s. Her hand-painted posters have been carried by thousands of protestors at the Women’s March\, March for Our Lives\, UTLA Teacher’s Strike\, and Global Climate Strike. SUMMARY:Expand Your Typographic Potential on the Web
DESCRIPTION:with Marie Otsuka\nDuring this hands-on workshop using foundational web languages\, we will explore typographic expression on the web.\n  \nThis four-week workshop (running Thursday evenings from September 7 —28) is intended for designers new to typography in the browser and will cover how to control typography on the web. From standard typesetting to experimental techniques\, we will learn various ways to work with digital type — ranging from loading a webfont to animating variable fonts. We will approach the browser as a creative medium by developing a single-serve website that demonstrates intentional typography\, in both design and functionality. Instruction will cover ways to control visual composition and basic interactivity on the web\, using HTML & CSS. Participants will need no prior knowledge of these languages for this workshop but should be prepared to dive into coding. \n  \nMarie Otsuka is a designer and programmer working on fonts\, websites\, tools\, and books. She currently draws typefaces and develops type-oriented tools at Occupant Fonts\, while working with a range of organizations and artists as an independent web developer and graphic designer. Marie has taught various web/type-related courses at Rhode Island School of Design\, California College of the Arts\, Parsons The New School\, and the School of Visual Arts.

Before joining IBPA\, she was the founding vice president and publisher at Harper Horizon\, a new nonfiction imprint of HarperCollins\, based out of Nashville\, TN. \nPrior to that\, she was the director of content acquisition for Ingram Content Group\, where she developed initiatives that supported independent publishers of all sizes\, using print-on-demand services to produce and distribute content. \nAndrea spent her first 15 years in the publishing industry at independent publisher Workman Publishing\, leading teams in special markets\, sales\, and digital marketing\, including three years as executive director of digital strategy and operations.

As a journalist\, she worked at The Miami Herald\, Chicago Tribune\, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel\, and Newsday in New York. After her career in journalism\, she turned to editing manuscripts\, specifically crime fiction. She has worked with authors who went on to win or place as finalists in the Edgar awards\, Killer Nashville Silver Falchion awards\, IPPY (Independent Publisher Book awards)\, CWA Dagger award\, RWA Daphne Du Maurier award\, and several other writing competitions. She is also an educator\, teaching copy editing through the University of California\, San Diego\, and through the Editorial Freelancers Association.

DESCRIPTION:Diane Power Zimmerman will share highlights from her book Nut Tree: From a California Ranch to a Design\, Food\, and Hospitality Icon. As the oldest granddaughter of the founders of a famous northern California roadside destination\, Nut Tree\, Power Zimmerman is uniquely poised to tell the story of a twentieth century icon. \nThe real story begins in 1921\, when newlyweds\, Helen and Bunny (Edward) Power took over a lease on a 150-acre California ranch and disaster struck. A late frost and early heat wave wiped out most of the fruit crop\, and what was left\, could no longer be shipped to the cities in the East. In desperation the couple set up a roadside stand to sell fruit and recapture some profits. They soon realized that American’s love affair with the automobile had just begun. \nHelen and Bunny Power were in the right place and time to start a small farm-based restaurant that grew into a multi-million-dollar entertainment complex thanks to the advent of the automobile. While the history begins with the California Gold Rush\, the main story focuses on the entrepreneurial successes of her family. \nAfter the business closed\, Power Zimmerman began to collect the stories tinged with nostalgia and the vivid memories proffered by fans. Power Zimmerman draws from family records\, letters\, newspaper clippings\, photos\, and the extensive archives of the Vacaville Museum to create a visually stunning book full of tales and photos chronicling the twentieth century. Power Zimmerman reflects on the writing experience and tells how a simple history took on a life of its own. \nAn in-person and virtual presentation by Diane Power Zimmerman\, author and a fifth-generation member of the founding family of the Nut Tree
