SUMMARY:Editors Helping Editors
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our “Editors Helping Editors” meeting. Bring your problems\, big and small\, as well as your thinking caps. We’ll work together to solve event-goers quandaries and questions\, which could range from common questions like how to find clients in a particular field (say academic editing) to more situation-specific issues like why a particular macro isn’t working in Word. The only topic that’s off limits is setting rates\, as that can be seen as price-fixing. However\, we can talk about rate-adjacent topics\, such as tools and data we use when setting rates\, what counts as a tax write-off\, and how/when to raise rates. \nThis month\, Erin Brenner will join us to discuss communicating with clients! \nThis event is now open to all editors and will not be recorded. \n

SUMMARY:Judson: Innovation in Stained Glass
DESCRIPTION:Five generations of Judsons have worked with artists\, architects\, and designers to create Old World-style stained glass whose quality and craftsmanship has often been compared to the work of Louis Tiffany. Famed for its Craftsman glass\, Judson arts-and-crafts era windows have been celebrated by experts in the field for decades. Judson’s work with Frank Lloyd Wright on Hollyhock House in the 1920s was recently re-saluted when the house was named to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list. Established in Pasadena during the heyday of the Arroyo Culture\, headquarters of Judson Studios are still housed in the original Craftsman-era home and studio of patriarch William Lees Judson. \nMuch of Judson’s finest early work was installed in religious buildings. Along with the studio’s numerous institutional and residential projects\, JUDSON: Innovation in Stained Glass illustrates fine work in churches dating back to the early twentieth century. Modern work is also featured\, including the extraordinary Air Force Academy Chapel in Colorado Springs\, completed in 1962\, a mid-century wonder whose soaring panels of color introduced an architecturally mesmerizing approach to stained glass that had never been executed before. \nOnce Judson Studios developed methods for blending subtle variations of color in glass for the Church of the Resurrection window\, the possibilities of glass as an artist’s medium were apparent. Now\, in addition to its work in traditional leaded stained glass\, Judson Studios is working with fine artists creating effects in fused glass that were previously unachievable. Most recently\, fine artist Sarah Cain worked with Judson Studios to create a work in glass 10 feet high by 150 feet long; it was installed at the San Francisco International Airport in July 2019. \nAn in-person presentation by David Judson\, author and president of Judson Studios

SUMMARY:The Past Inside the Future: Commercial Classics at Five
DESCRIPTION:Around the turn of the 19th century\, a revolution left the world of typography utterly different from what it had been. The explosion of new type styles during this period—including the modern face\, the fat face\, the slab serif\, and the sans serif—reflected new technologies and ways of thinking that set the stage for modern graphic design\, and continue to shape our visual language more than two hundred years later. \nCommercial Classics began as an adjunct foundry for historical releases at Commercial Type\, and has become an evolving project to research and reinterpret the typefaces of the Industrial Era for designers in another revolutionary era: our own. \nDuring this journey into the past and back again\, we will explore a story of ideas and reactions in type design; the evolution of letterforms within technological and societal currents; learning how to translate the language of history; the joy of archives and the challenges of very large projects; and why the ideal place for a 19th-century English typeface might just be in California. \nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library\, where events are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Al Martinez in the Korean War: A Future Columnist Hones His Craft
DESCRIPTION:For more than twenty years\, the Los Angeles Times columnist Al Martinez (1929-2015) delighted\, and enriched the lives of\, thousands of readers across southern California. An Oakland native\, he attended San Francisco State College. Later\, he was a reporter for the Richmond Independent and the Oakland Tribune before being lured to Los Angeles to write for the Times. By the time he retired in 2009\, he had earned an extensive array of awards and honors\, including three shared Pulitzers and the National Headliner Award for the best column in the U.S. \nBefore becoming a professional journalist\, Martinez served in the Korean War at the age of 21 with the U.S. Marines\, from 1951-1952\, first on the battle front and then as a war correspondent. He dispatched letters almost daily to his young bride Joanne. \nNow a volume of Al Martinez’ Korean War letters\, I Promise You I’ll Be Home\, has been published by McFarland and Co. Written from the unique perspective of an obviously gifted professional writer at the beginning of his career\, his letters home capture his experiences eloquently and with depth of understanding as they express the dangers\, hardships\, fear\, friendships\, and even humor of life at the front. His vivid\, often humorous pen-and-ink drawings portray scenes from the front lines. \nThe letters are all housed in the archive of his papers at The Huntington Library. They form not only an important record for the history of the largely ignored Korean War\, but also a crackling good narrative of one Marine’s time at the battle front and as a combat correspondent. Even as a young writer\, he was among the very best in storytelling and in the elegance of his prose. \nA virtual presentation by Sara S. Hodson\, author and retired curator of literary collections for The Huntington Library

SUMMARY:Binding Community: Bringing Together Diverse Peoples with the Art of Bookbinding
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to create a community book-binding experience? Want to bring attention to local events through bookbinding? Don’t know where to start? \nPlease join community organizer and artist\, Cynthia Marsh\, in a virtual webinar with the American Bookbinders Museum on how to do just that. From exploring preliminary ideas through execution\, Marsh will guide you through the process of using printing and bookbinding to build community. \nCynthia Marsh is a record keeper who begins conversations by juxtaposing collected remnants of the visual noise that crosses her path. Marsh was a founding member of the Women’s Graphic Center at the (historic) Woman’s Building in Los Angeles. From 1978-1990 she operated a freelance print and illustration studio in Los Angeles that produced Grammy-nominated album covers. She taught courses in printmaking and design at a multitude of universities and founded the Goldsmith Press and Rare Type Collection–a living museum of 19th-century wood type that encourages community members to print and post their stories.

SUMMARY:Can Science Inform Graphic Design?
DESCRIPTION:Tom White asks\, “How does someone go from Rocket Science to Graphic Design?” While many aspects of graphic design necessitate creativity and an artistic approach\, he bases his work and execution around a more scientific mindset. But he’s not talking about AI! \nAccording to White\, a great professor once said\, “Graphic designers are problem solvers\,” and he finds more and more each day how accurate his lesson was. No matter what the problem may be\, a graphic designer should be able to produce a relevant\, logical\, interesting\, and intellectual solution. Anything less\, according to White\, would make said professor “barf\, and go blind.” \nGraphic Design is not a thing\, rather it’s a process\, an idea\, a message that hones the fundamentals of graphic design such as: \n\n\nThe Gestalt Theory (the sum of the whole is greater than its parts). \n\n\nVerbal + Visual = Message. \n\n\nThe three factors that define a relevant and logical solution: 1) the nature of the problem\, 2) the audience\, and 3) the functional parameters). \n\n\nGood design comes from extensive research and great attention to detail\, and it always contains a solid intellectual concept. Bad design\, on the other hand\, as White’s professor so eloquently put it\, “should be nuked with the whales.” \nThe professor’s last words of encouragement were blunt: “Now go out there\, create world-class graphic design\, and knock the world on its ass.” \nAnd so\, world-class graphic designer as he is\, that is Tom White’s challenge and goal. With each new problem he solves\, he must find a way to catch the world off guard. He must find a way to disrupt its balance\, and then with one mighty blow\, send it plummeting onto its rear end. \nAbout the Presenter\nAlan Gilbertson is a freelance designer and creative director living in the Tampa Bay area of Florida\, the “Sun Coast” of the United States. A self-confessed nerd\, he loves messing with software to see if it will break\, so he has been a beta tester of various products for more than three decades\, including all of the Adobe design suite. \nAlan is an Adobe Community Expert\, a regular contributor to CreativePro Magazine and the Adobe Community Forums\, and can occasionally be found wandering the exhibition halls at design conferences looking for coffee and donuts.

SUMMARY:Spine Design with John Berry
DESCRIPTION:Maybe you can’t judge a book by its cover\, but in a bookstore we judge most of them first by their spines. With most new books—not the ones lying out on tables or prominently displayed with their covers out\, but the ones lining the shelves—the spine is all we see. The beautiful\, dramatic cover\, upon which great effort and sometimes even expense may have been lavished\, never gets seen if a browsing book buyer doesn’t reach out and pull the book off the shelf. \nYou must register to attend and to be sent a link of the recording.

SUMMARY:Editing with Disability/Illness/Neurodivergence
DESCRIPTION:This afternoon chat centers people who work as editors and are living with disability\, chronic illness\, and/or neurodivergence. It is open to everyone. The idea was partly inspired by an active peer group currently hosted by the Society of Authors (https://www.societyofauthors.org/Groups/Authors-Disabilities-Illnesses-Network). \nGroup agreements that will be open for discussion at the start of the chat:\n* Disclosure (of illness/disability/etc.) is welcome. Disclosure is not required.\n* There are no requirements. We participate (or not) in the ways that work for us.\n* We take care of ourselves. Stretch\, eat\, drink\, take a break\, etc.\n* We can’t be articulate all the time. We give each other the benefit of the doubt and ask questions.\n* We keep confidentiality: Learning goes\, stories stay. \nThe online chat this Thursday will have an open agenda\, loosely focused on work-life: How do we define\, handle\, and sustain our work as editors. What kinds of projects are a good fit? How do we obtain enough but not too much work (if that is even possible in editing!)? What have we learned and what can we learn from each other? \nThis event is free to attend and open to all editors.

SUMMARY:Taller Inical: De Formas\, Trazos y Letras
DESCRIPTION:with Fer Cozzi\n¡Hacer fuentes es divertido!
