Allured by the smell of old books and the temptation of a management-approved afternoon nap\, Darkshire was soon unteetering stacks of first editions and placating the store’s resident ghost (the late Mr. Sotheran\, hit by a tram). \nA novice in this ancient\, potentially haunted establishment\, Darkshire describes Sotheran’s brushes with history (Dickens\, the Titanic)\, its joyous disorganization\, and the unspoken rules of its gleefully old-fashioned staff\, whose mere glance may cause the computer to burst into flames. As Darkshire gains confidence and experience\, he shares trivia about ancient editions and explores the strange space that books occupy in our lives—where old books often have strong sentimental value\, but rarely a commercial one.

DESCRIPTION:The creative career of Joseph Jacinto “Jo” Mora (1876-1947) was both compelling and diverse. A painter\, muralist\, sculptor\, building designer\, cartographer\, actor\, set designer\, cowboy\, and husband and father\, Mora’s art work sprang from his interests in numerous subjects including Native Americans and cowboys\, the American landscape\, California history and its missions\, the classics of Chaucer\, and Mora’s love of animals. \nThe artistic legacy of Jo Mora continues to evolve. Upon Mora’s passing in 1947\, his son Jo Jr. lovingly worked to spread the word about his father’s creative accomplishments. SUMMARY:Letters from Buenos Aires with Muk Monsalve
DESCRIPTION:Take a journey through the locations and architectural details in Buenos Aires that inspired a typographic textile.\nSince 2018\, Muk Monsalve has been hosting and curating type walks around Buenos Aires with her art and business partner\, Lucía Soto. This project\, called Letra Capital\, allows them to highlight and share the love they feel while walking their city. \nWhen their type walks halted during the pandemic\, they developed a souvenir for Letra Capital: a typographic scarf recreating the journey. They had so much fun developing it that the product ended up becoming a collection called Musa del Asfalto. The scarves and cover ups are not only beautiful\, they also tell stories through their design\, type\, and phrases. The typefaces they use in the collection\, Arrabal and Ciudadela\, were custom designed–not revivals–and take direct inspiration from landmarks and landscapes of Buenos Aires. \nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library\, where events are free and open to all.

DESCRIPTION:Have you bought a piece of clothing from a store\, and\, when you took it to the cashier\, had the person checking you out say\, “this color will look great on you!” This is a sales strategy\, a subtle but still manipulative attempt to build brand loyalty—it’s a way for the retailer to assure you that you made a good decision when you chose to buy with them. \nHow might freelance editors use similar strategies in our own business? What are our options for applying sales psychology ethically\, without manipulating our clients? In this short presentation\, Letitia Henville will describe how she captures and shares quantifiable measures of the difference her editing makes with her clients. As a group\, we’ll then discuss other freelance-appropriate sales strategies\, as well as the ethics of applying tricks from consumer psychology and behavioral insights to our business practices. \nLetitia Henville (she/her)\, PhD\, is an award-winning instructor and editor who helps researchers to articulate their goals to an audience of their peers. Her mother\, armed with plenty of mom-guilt and a spreadsheet of Facebook-stalked Armenian men\, convinces Nar to attend “Explore Armenia\,” a month-long series of events in the city. But it’s not the mom-approved playboy doctor or the wealthy engineer who catch Nar’s eye—it’s Erebuni\, a woman as immersed in the witchy arts as she is in preserving Armenian identity. Suddenly\, with Erebuni as her wingwoman\, the events feel like far less of a chore\, and much more of an adventure. Who knew cooking up kuftes together could be so…sexy? DESCRIPTION:Dig into overlooked design history and get a sneak peek at Letterform Archive’s forthcoming research hub on women in metal type.\nEver wonder who originally designed your favorite typefaces? Many of the fonts we use today (such as Futura\, Helvetica\, Baskerville) originated in the metal type era (late 1800s to 1950s) when hot metal typesetting became the norm for printing\, revolutionizing what had been a mostly manual process for centuries. Much of today’s typographic design relies on norms from this period when Linotype and Monotype dominated. Yet\, with few exceptions\, women’s contributions in the metal type era have mostly been erased or ignored. \nFor this Salon\, Bethany Qualls takes us on a deep dive into these often-overlooked women and their contributions to type history. Even though others have researched early women type designers\, no single\, publicly accessible resource exists to synthesize all of what we do know. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at her role as a Mellon Public Scholar in creating Letterform’s forthcoming finding aid and research hub which aims to fill this gap. Highlights will include examples of type specimens from the LA collection\, what’s been left out of most English language resources thus far\, tips on how to research in languages you don’t speak written in alphabets you can’t read\, and the project’s future phases. \n  \nOn-site and online.

The New York Times calls Zauner’s memoir “an artistic triumph—artfully observed and emotionally rich.” \nZauner\, who is also a phenomenally successful indie musician performing under the band name Japanese Breakfast\, is no stranger to touring\, but the publication of her memoir early in the pandemic meant that she’s made almost no in-person appearances for her book—until now. \nIn celebration of the paperback release of Crying in H Mart\, the Bay Area Book Festival is honored to host Zauner’s only Bay Area book tour appearance this spring. Throughout the Russian assault\, Kurkov has lived in Kyiv and in the remote countryside\, spending the sleepless nights of continuous bombardment delivering the truth about this atrocity to the world. In the process\, he has become an important voice for his people\, contributing satirical commentary to international media\, raising money for charities\, and speaking at crowded halls in the capitols of Europe. His work is frequently compared to Vonnegut\, Kafka\, and Murakami. He appears here in conversation with Russia-born author Olga Zilberbourg\, followed by book sales and signing.

Showcasing four individual projects created by Laura Meseguer\, Marina Garone\, Sandra García\, Dafne Martínez\, and Jimena Gamio\, this publication targets tangible topics\, such as educational systems\, endangered indigenous languages\, and calligraphy. \nLavinia Lascaris and Ximena Amaya\, graduates of ArtCenter Graphic Design\, were chiefly responsible for the design and production of Mujeres Hispanas y Tipografía. They will be presenting their process in creating the catalog\, as they endeavored to share the importance of Hispanic women’s voices and challenge the colonial and patriarchal narratives that have permeated contemporary typography and design. \nAn in-person and virtual presentation by Gloria Kondrup\, professor\, ArtCenter College of Design and director of Archetype Press\, Lavinia Lascaris\, exhibition and graphic designer at Hoffmitz Milken Center for Typography\, and Ximena Amaya\, graphic designer and Typography Fellow at Hoffmitz Milken Center for Typography.
