SUMMARY:Introduction to Modern Type Design
DESCRIPTION:with Kel Troughton \n  \nDuring this 10-week online workshop\, which meets on Wednesday evenings from January 31–April 10 (no class on February 21)\, you will create your own original typefaces as you gain an understanding of the methodologies and software used to produce high-quality digital type. \nThe primary goal of this workshop is to show you how to systematically think about type and help you successfully make a font. We will focus on techniques and best practices for designing and spacing type\, introducing you to the conceptual foundations of type design\, including proofing and testing work. You will work in the Glyphs App throughout the week and upload homework before each meeting for review. Throughout the workshop you will learn various lessons about type\, history\, sketching\, and get weekly feedback on your type projects. \nThis workshop is suitable for designers just starting to think about type and for designers with some type design experience\, hoping to hone their skills and processes. Some experience with drawing Bézier curves (in Adobe Illustrator\, for instance) and with typography is recommended but not required. This is a great course for anyone interested in applying for a spot in Type West’s Postgraduate Certificate Program in Type Design. \nA free temporary license for Glyphs App will be made available to all participants. The class is capped at fifteen students to allow for one-on-one instruction.

SUMMARY:Winning Book Designs
DESCRIPTION:Designers Tim Green and Molly von Borstel of Faceout Studio are the source of a number of award-winning book covers\, including their entries at the PPN 2023 Book Show. In this virtual event\, they discuss their process for creating these designs. They will cover the roles of inspiration\, trends\, and other resources in planning and executing great book design. They’ll also discuss how an effective design transmittal can foster collaboration and communication\, and how to manage production expectations. You can expect to come away with a great sense of a typical day in the work life of a great design team that will inspire your own work. \n  \nMolly von Borstel graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design and moved to Central Oregon to join Faceout Studio in 2019. Since then she has fallen in love with the visual storytelling aspect of the job\, and the endless adventures the area has to offer. She has a hard time sitting still\, so when she’s not designing books\, find her anywhere but behind a desk! \n  \nTim Green graduated from Northern Arizona University in 2002\, and he has been designing books and brands ever since. His work has been recognized by the AIGA\, Print Magazine\, the National Advertising Federation\, New York Book Show\, Graphis\, and Chuck Norris (true story). Tim is the creative director at Faceout Studio and the co-owner and creative director of Molt Brands\, a newly minted design business specializing in brand identity. When he is not at his desk designing\, he is most likely to be found at home\, with his lovely wife and 3 children. If he’s not with them\, it’s a safe bet you’ll find him at a coffee shop\, probably designing something.

SUMMARY:Black Grief/White Grievance: The Politics of Loss
DESCRIPTION:Join author\, professor\, and political theorist Juliet Hooker in conversation on her new book\, Black Grief/White Grievance: The Politics of Loss. In democracies\, citizens must accept loss; we can’t always be on the winning side. But in the United States\, the fundamental civic capacity of being able to lose is not distributed equally. In Black Grief/White Grievance: The Politics of Loss\, Juliet Hooker\, a leading thinker on democracy and race\, argues that the two most important forces driving racial politics in the United States today are Black grief and white grievance. Black grief is exemplified by current protests against police violence—the latest in a tradition of violent death and subsequent public mourning spurring Black political mobilization. The potent politics of white grievance\, meanwhile\, which is also not new\, imagines the United States as a white country under siege. Drawing on African American political thought\, Hooker examines key moments in US racial politics that illuminate the problem of loss in democracy. Calling for an expansion of Black and white political imaginations\, Hooker argues that both must learn to sit with loss\, for different reasons and to different ends.
