Information for Potential Host Publishers

Publishing Professionals Network is looking for publishers interested in hosting a guest participant for our winter 2019–2020 PPN One-Day Publishing Immersion Program. Guest participants will have interest in publishing and may have some relevant experience (e.g., through a student newspaper or literary magazine) but will likely have limited practical experience and knowledge of the publishing world.

We ask that hosts provide structured activities throughout one day for at least five hours (roughly from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) and provide a variety of activities, including but not limited to

  • Meetings or informational interviews with at least three publishing professionals working in different departments
  • Job shadowing, if appropriate
  • Attendance at one or more meetings or publishing discussions, such as a sales conference, editorial meeting, or brainstorming session (based on your existing schedules; we do not expect hosts to reschedule meetings to fit a participant’s visit)
  • Introduction to at least one system used by the company, such as an in-house production system, Bookscan, or systems used to manage e-marketing and social media
  • Reading prior to the immersion day for the guest participant, especially if relevant to a meeting the participant will attend (e.g., a book proposal that will be discussed at an acquisitions meeting)

For their part, our guest participants will be expected to do the following:

  • Sign a nondisclosure agreement (because they will be learning about books that are in production or that have not yet been acquired).
  • Prepare in advance by thoroughly reading the publisher’s catalog and website.
  • Read provided material in advance and come to the company prepared with questions.
  • After the experience, complete a questionnaire.

We hope that this program will give guests a basic introduction to publishing and enable them to become more competitive candidates for full internships or entry-level positions.

If you and/or others at your company would like to participate in our one-day program, please fill out and submit a questionnaire for potential hosts to help us get more information about your company’s availability and what you plan to offer your guest participant. Send your questionnaire by October 25. We plan to notify host organizations by November 15 if we have someone to visit them, and we can help to set up the day in December 2019 through February 2020.

Please reach out to with any questions about the program. We hope that this will be a fun and rewarding program for both hosts and participants!
