General Purpose:

The Account Executive is responsible for growing client relationships. Typical duties include prospecting within existing accounts to discover opportunities for outreach and distribution of promotional materials that support client growth.

An account executive is responsible for overseeing sales strategy and profitability of client accounts. Account Executives ensure their organizational goals are being met.

Account executives grow customer accounts, eliminate competitive threats, and maintain customer and account satisfaction. They are proactive and curious members of a healthy sales team, and often identify growth opportunities for clients before they identify a need or gap for themselves.


  • Account executives should navigate the account and create opportunities for growth via marketing campaigns and communication strategies.
  • To be a successful account executive, it’s important to have a high level of intellectual curiosity. There are no marketing qualified leads to explore, or prospects to outreach to. Instead, you should be curious about your customer’s business. So curious that you’re able to identify gaps and growth potential before they can.
  • Account executives are in front of so many people, it’s important for them to be vigilant of competitors. An AE’s jobs is to make it challenging for competitors to call in and win business in their assigned account.
  • Part of an account executive’s strategic thinking should be, “If a competitor wanted to poach this account, what would their shortest path to success look like?” and eliminate that path.
  • Take immediate action to open a dialogue with out-of-reach teams, and work with product to build these offerings into your roadmap.
  • Optimize partnerships with existing accounts by documenting and executing on strategic initiatives that align the client’s talent strategy to business their strategy. Whether quarterly or monthly, AEs should seek regular customer feedback on how Wiley is doing as a partner. These questions shouldn’t only be about what’s broken and how it can be fixed. They should probe how the customer feels about Wiley on an emotional level.
  • It’s important to understand how Wiley’s performance and service is contributing to specific client initiatives and making a business impact across the client’s organization.
  • An account executive can also manage the collection and analysis of pertinent data about key verticals to help Wiley achieve the ideal service mix and set the right growth targets.
  • Analysis includes information about client behavior and lifecycle, industry trends and growth potential for each new account. This data should inform decisions regarding Wiley’s overall sales strategy.



  • Minimum: Bachelor’s Degree
  • 5+ years of B2B sales within higher education or business essential experience.
  • Demonstrate desired skills to sign and convert new and existing partnerships to Partner Plus and EBP.
  • Proven success within assigned vertical to grow accounts for desired outcomes.
  • Proven experience carrying out marketing efforts, including planning, prioritizing, and implementing strategy.
  • Highly organized and proficient at managing multiple projects at the same time.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • High attention to detail. Ability to work in a multi-tasking entrepreneurial environment.
  • Good attitude and a positive mind-set.
  • An account executive should understand the sales process and know how to effectively work with a sales team.
  • Strong negotiation skills are a must for those in an account executive role.
  • Clearly communicate verbally and in written form to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Must be able to track and executive deliverables across timelines.
  • Lead and work directly with internal and external clients to provide recommendations and outline plans.
  • Proficient in CRM management (HubSpot)
  • Proven track record of exceeding goals and managing multiple outcomes for desired results.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Required travel up to 50% of the time
