Position: Communications Associate
Reports to: Communications Manager
Based at: Tenderloin Center, 180 Golden Gate Ave., San Francisco (currently remote)
Status/hours: Hourly, non-exempt. 20-30 hours/week, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. through 5 p.m., with some evening or weekend hours
Salary: $18-20/hour

The Communications Associate helps amplify the voices of our students, conveys our imaginative brand, and elevates the work of 826 Valencia through newsletters, our website, social media, press relations, and other external communications. The ideal candidate is a very strong writer and communicator who can create messages that effectively inspire and engage various stakeholders, including students and families, teachers, donors, volunteers, and customers. The Communications Associate is a member of 826 Valencia’s Advancement Team, which is responsible for communications and fundraising.

826 Valencia is an award-winning nonprofit dedicated to supporting under-resourced students ages six to eighteen with their creative and expository writing skills and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our innovative model has inspired more than 40 like-minded organizations world-wide. Major Responsibilities


  • Regularly update the content on 826 Valencia’s WordPress website and store website, so information is current, clear, and compelling, and the website is easy for students, parents, teachers, volunteers, donors, and customers to navigate.
  • Collaborate with teams across the organization to create and publish content for 826 Valencia’s three newsletters, social media platforms, print collateral, presentations, and all external communications.
  • Help develop and implement social media campaigns and other targeted marketing strategies.
  • Support the Communications Manager with logistics of media events, preparing stakeholders for interviews, and hosting press.
  • Maintain data-tracking systems to inform strategic decision-making. Help set goals and track metrics via Google Analytics, Mailchimp, and social media tools.
  • Advance the goal of amplifying our students’ voices by supporting book and podcast promotion and distribution and special publishing opportunities.
  • Maintain 826 Valencia’s up-to-date content and good standing on websites such as Guidestar and Charity Navigator.



  • Actively participate in 826 Valencia meetings, on various teams and committees, and other work events.
  • Support programs as needed in order to meet our students’ needs and gain a broad and deep understanding of our work.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated ability to write and communicate clearly, on brand, in a variety of styles for a range of stakeholders and situations
  • Experience with nonprofit communications (preferred)
  • Website development skills and/or WordPress fluency (preferred)

  • Able to complete a background check and tuberculosis screening (a requirement for working with youth in our programs)
