POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Art Director (in consultation with the Managing Editor), the Design and Production Associate supports the Editing, Design, and Production department in its production of 200 print and ebook scholarly books annually. With an emphasis on technical support, the Design and Production Associate creates, checks, and/or adjusts book cover and typeset interior files, manuscript files in Word and other formats, PDF layouts, and EPUB files. The Associate also uses in-house databases to create print orders and to set up book files for print on demand production.

Responsibilities

50% Design Production: –Creating cover and jacket mechanical layouts for new titles using preset templates. –Converting existing cover and jacket mechanicals of backlist titles into print-on-demand format, i.e. adjusting the dimensions to fit POD templates –Creating files and handling production of business cards and other stationery items using preset templates –Creating front cover files for simple open access titles using pre-chosen cover image and design templates
25% Editorial Production: –Preparing manuscript files for copyediting, including applying typesetting codes –Checking composed pages for adherence to standard book-making conventions and confirming cross-references –Proofing figures and maps –Ordering ebooks and checking ebooks for quality and usability, requesting corrections
15% Printing: –Writing purchase orders, checking weekly printer reports to confirm status of active projects, processing printer invoices –Setting up book files for print on demand productio
5% Administrative Support: –Assisting Managing Editor with miscellaneous tasks
5% Marketing Materials: –Tracking cover materials (final copy, mechanical routing, files to printer) to ensure all deadlines are met –Checking and proofreading marketing copy (covers/jackets and catalogs)

Required Qualifications 

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud applications, focusing on InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat (knowledge of how InDesign’s style sheets work is a plus).
  • Ability to: – proofread text and art – write questions, comments, and instructions clearly – assess visual/design consistency in composed pages and artwork – set and maintain priorities under multiple deadlines -proactively manage ongoing projects over time through various checkpoints –   maintain focus for long periods on highly detailed tasks – ask for help, clarification, training and instruction.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.
  • Familiarity with Word, Adobe Acrobat, web-based databases, text-style manuals.
  • Curiosity about book-making process.
  • Interpersonal communication skills to interact effectively with a variety of clients, support staff and vendors.

Education

  • Associate’s degree in graphic-design related area and / or two years of experience / training in a related field.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Salary: Recommended salary range is $52,500 – $61,600 commensurate with experience.
