Developmental Editor | Idea Architects

Idea Architects seeks a developmental editor with publishing industry experience in developmentally editing non-fiction trade books. We hire for intelligence, attitude, and dedication as well as skill.


  • Work with authors and collaborative writers to editorially develop original proposals and manuscripts for publication (including all editorial aspects of book development), editing jacket copy and marketing copy as required, contributing to the finalization of the manuscript, collaboration with publishers, authors, writers, and the rest of our editorial team
  • Provide clear guidance to authors and collaborative writers throughout the writing process
  • Coordinate closely with Idea Architects’ editorial team to guide our short-term and long-term strategy and to identify subject areas of interest
  • Maintain professional relationships with relevant industry contacts
  • Meet deadlines on outlines, proposals, and manuscripts
  • Carry out in-depth assessments of draft content from authors to ensure it meets market needs
  • Note variations in voice, tone, and effectiveness where relevant to the book’s needs
  • Create and maintain internal project schedules
  • Act as primary point of contact for authors and collaborative writers throughout the publication process on some projects.
  • Evaluate prospective projects in coordination with the editorial staff
  • Help editorial team to identify, onboard, and train top collaborative writers
  • Ensure the final published book can achieve our goal of a healthier, wiser, more just world


Required Qualifications

  • Excellent editorial, writing, rewriting, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, creative, flexible, and driven
  • Detailed knowledge of book publishing processes and functions (especially editorial)
  • Excellent communication, project management, and networking skills
  • A strong commitment to intra- and inter-departmental communication and collaboration
  • Excellent computer skills, especially the Microsoft Office and Google suites, Dropbox, and Adobe
  • Professional references
  • Five or more year’s experience in developmental editing and book publishing with demonstrable editing skills


Position is half-time to full-time and remote work, so relocation is not required, although relocation to our headquarters in Santa Cruz, California is also possible if successful candidate wishes. Send cover letter and resume to
