Executive Editor, Childrens’ Publishing | Insight Editions

Insight Editions is looking for a talented Executive Editor to grow and expand our Children’s publishing program. The ideal candidate is a proven team leader who is also an experienced children’s editor with a strong design eye and impeccable project management skills with a record of conceiving and executing series concepts and product ideas across a variety of formats.

As the Children’s Executive Editor, you will be responsible for directing the team to manage project schedules and internal and external resources required for the creation of all published children’s works. This is a senior management role requiring an experienced leader with the proven ability to manage multiple deadlines, expectations, and projects while working closely with talented authors, illustrators, writers, and publishers. Qualified applicants must possess a love for reader and market research, are extremely detail-focused, and can handle ever-changing deadlines and expectations with calm and ease. Prior experience identifying authors, negotiating work for hire contracts, acquiring assets, and assisting in the creative vision behind a project are essential. Being passionate about children’s topics and relentless in your drive for perfection are qualities that will drive sustainable success in this position. Ideal candidates are adept at opportunity identification and executing a sound strategy delivering timely product, market, channel fit. Candidates should have an active and extensive networked in the Children’s trade publishing industry.

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 7 years of experience managing editorial teams and as an individual contributor editing and publishing illustrated children’s books
  • 5 years of experience performing project management duties in a creative or editorial leadership role.
  • Prior experience managing projects for ideas to execution including content acquisitions, book development, budgets and production schedules
  • BA in English, or a related field


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute the editorial vision for the list including assigned projects and those projects you develop on your own. Clearly communicate that vision to design, production, sales, marketing, and other editorial staff
  • Conduct ongoing market research, identify market opportunities, and draft book proposals
  • Plan, coordinate and manage the work product of assigned editorial staff, including freelancers and contractors, to ensure quality control and timeliness of projects throughout the development and production cycle
  • Oversee, proof and edit the quality control and approval of all Children’s editorial content
  • Maintain accurate schedules, budgets, specs and track changes for all assigned projects
  • Partner and coordinate with the sales department and write B2B and B2C copy, and ensure all sales materials (product information sheets, covers, spreads, dummies, and layouts) are provided on time
  • Prepare, champion, and present titles at internal acquisitions, launch, and sales conferences
  • Participate in weekly scheduling and development meetings, accurately reporting status of assigned projects
  • Manage and develop the editorial team including delivering regular performance appraisal reviews and continuous coaching
  • Develop, manage and cultivate ongoing and new vendor and partner relationships
  • Provide technical support and suggestions to design team as needed
  • Create and develop innovative solutions for the prevention or management of schedule delays and budget overruns
  • Coordinate traffic and delivery of proofs to internal or external clients
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proven knowledge of fundamental editorial disciplines and processes
  • Highly proficient in editing children’s books; proficiency with illustrated books is preferred
  • Expert skills in copy editing
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, manage resources across multiple projects, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Knowledge and understanding with the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Highly motivated, productive, and detail-oriented, with strong organizational skills and professional demeanor
  • Strong knowledge of publishing processes and formats
  • Experience in mentoring and developing editorial talent, prioritizing work and resources, and providing timely and clear critical feedback
  • Strong knowledge of book manufacturing
  • Effective presentation skills and communication abilities in both internal and external situations, including corporate leadership, brand partners, digital agencies and internal departments
  • Highly proficient with project management
  • Proven record in problem solving in a fast-paced environment
  • Advanced or Expert proficiency with the following computer applications and operations systems:
  • Adobe Acrobat Professional
  • MS Office Suite
  • Filemaker (preferred, but nor required)
  • Ability to stay calm under pressure and to remain focused on goals while navigating unforeseen changes and critical feedback
  • Highly detail-oriented, organized and able to prioritize projects and meet deadlines
  • Professional demeanor and ability to interact with all levels of employees and management
