Marketing Assistant | Avalon Travel (Hachette Book Group)

The Marketing Assistant will join the Avalon Travel Marketing Department. Our creative team promotes Rick Steves guidebooks and Moon Travel Guides along with other travel books.  Avalon is part of Hachette, one of the largest publishers in the world.

Reporting to the VP Associate Publisher, the Marketing Assistant will work closely with the entire department. The Marketing Assistant will have the opportunity to learn from an enthusiastic, collaborative team while supporting campaigns and marketing efforts throughout the publishing process. The ideal candidate is a strong writer, highly organized, and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously. Solid verbal communication skills are essential, and an interest in both marketing and publishing is required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Under supervision of Associate Marketing Managers, optimize, check consistency, and track title metadata for sales materials, catalogs, and retailer data feeds in US and UK market
  • Under supervision of Associate Marketing Managers, maintain the schedules for sales conference materials production and book metadata optimization
  • Assist in producing sales and marketing materials as requested, including PowerPoint slides, competitive research, and adapted book content
  • Assist in writing copy and developing ideas for social media, newsletters, ads, collateral and special projects
  • As needed, proof sales materials, content for, social media posts, and more
  • Assist in scheduling, posting, and capturing analytics for social media platforms
  • Source, process, and organize images for use in blog posts, email blasts, and social
  • Monitor social media engagement and consumer inbox and respond or route as needed
  • Other minor departmental tasks, which may include review copy mailings, supporting event coordination, processing invoices, and more


Essential Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • Outstanding writing skills and an eye for proofreading
  • Strong interest in both marketing and book publishing
  • Able to work on multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks
  • Highly organized and attentive to detail
  • Self-motivated; able to contribute to team atmosphere and voice creative ideas
  • Working knowledge of major social media platforms
